Andy, this woman who’s living with you (she needs a name, it’s too much to
type), why isn’t she on the List? This the best place for Riv lovers, I think.
Plus, she could have some #RivSisters.

Interesting she’s been doing S24Os - is that what the cool kids in college are
doing now? Is it just a bunch of friends or a group from campus? Interesting!

When I graduated from nursing school sign-on bonuses were all the rage. Maybe
when this woman passes her NCLEX she will net herself a healthy sign-on bonus
from her employer and plunk down the money for her first Rivendell. It’s
absolutely what I would do if I had lived in a bike-friendly city when I
started out as a nurse. It looks like she has a mixte/step through already -
those are hard to give up. There’s a fresh batch of Clementines arriving at
Rivendell this summer, and they come in that gorgeous RBW blue (I have it, I
love it)...today at high noon Pacific time.

Leah- Our friend objectifies Rivendell and intends to own one. Which model
is unclear. She reads my Bicycle Quarterly magazines, loves the post war
French women riders and the YouTube videos from Rivendell. She's not an
assertive, "hard woman" sort of rider but rather a gentle cyclist of above
average stamina and fortitude. She did not waiver when I took her out on
the early rides to learn cycling in the city and how to get around by bike.
I asked her to "follow the path of my wheel as closely as you can and
signal like I do". She rides in such straight lines that people presume
she's a very experienced cyclist. She's biked to camp on Sub 24 hour
overnights, commutes, grocery shops and enjoys just getting out and
exploring on her bike. She's in the camp of generator hubs and fixed lights
for your same reasons. Her influences and interests don't point to a
particular model but she's graduated nursing school, awaits authorization
to test when it resumes, and has decided to remain here where she's worked
through school and is known. I'll help when her choice nears. Bicycling has
become very dear to her over these last few years. It's been her
transportation, independence, entertainment and source of esteem since
people gravitate to her when she's out riding in the city, asking questions
about bikes, places to ride, directions. To them she's a boss. An
approachable one, with good taste!

Hearing about your struggle to find a good shop and knowing how retail bike
shops everywhere, including those here in the East SF Bay Area give me an
uncomfortable sense of dissonance. It is true that the shelter-in-place
order has stretched out the timeline for repairs, but shops that survived
are super stoked to work on all bikes.

If it were just installing those new wheels and the dyno, it really
shouldn't take the mechanics too long (my estimate would be less than 30
minutes), but perhaps you have other repairs lined up.

Good luck with that; 2030 is a long, long way off.

After doing my due diligence on touring bikes, I bought an Atlantis in '03,
and Rivendell build it up with their recommended parts. They quizzed me
about what I planned to with the bike, then suggested suitable components.
When it arrived, after riding it, my reaction was "it's perfect, I don't
have to change a thing, just ride it." Well, that lasted about a month.
Over the last 17 years, I've lost count of how many "versions" the bike has
been thru. Various racks, bags, cassettes, handlebars, stems, shifters,
etc. As I think about it, the only original parts are the seat post,
crankset, and the hubs which were used on the second wheelset, built in
2009. Often I've thought "now it's perfect", but changing needs call for
changes.

Now, I've done anything like your wheelset but you'll find other little
fiddly bits that can be improved. Hey, it's only money & everyone needs a
hobby.

Re: [RBW] Re: It’s dull around here, let me bring some color

2020-05-21 Thread Leah Peterson
Ted, I’m sorry but I’m such a disappointment. In true form, with my aversion to
my scale (I’m never in agreement with that thing) I weighed *nothing* but just
tossed those wheels in the van and drove off to get them installed. Which
brings me to the story portion of my post...

Henderson and Las Vegas are woefully short of good bike shops. The two largest
are a LONG drive from me, and they concentrate on roadies or mountain biker
types but certainly not the Leah Petersons of the world. The only shop that
ever knew what a Rivendell was has closed its doors so I’m back to folks
thinking “What a nice cruiser.”

The shops that remain are booked solid. They can’t get parts. They can’t take
anymore bikes. Today I pointed the van NW and drove to Southwest Bikes. I
arrived 20 min before opening, and there was already a line in the parking lot.
I was #3 in line. I heard the mechanic say to the guy in front of me, “We
aren’t taking any new repairs.”

Um. I called last week and they had said to bring my bike in when I got my
wheels. After turning the guy in front of me away, it was my turn. “Did I hear
you say you aren’t taking new repairs?” I asked.

“Yeah, only simple things like flats.”

“Well, I need these wheels and dyno put on my bike, and I had some other things
on the list...”

“I took your call last week - I remember. I’m sorry; can you come back May 28th
and we’ll take the bike then?”

It’s not his fault; these are unprecedented times and frankly, I’m happy that
the bike industry is getting a cash infusion. So, I smiled, thanked him and
left without agreeing to come back.

I loaded the Clementine back onto the rack and started making phone calls. One
shop said bikes would be worked on June 7-8th. Last week I was waitlisted at a
promising shop so I called them to see where my name was at, and they had 5-6
pages of names on their waitlist! They figured it would be Sunday before they
would call me and even then I’d have to leave the bike for a couple of weeks.
There was one large shop that I’d avoided because they are named Pro Cyclery
and I just knew I’d be the laughingstock of their store if I pulled up with my
Clementine. I looked at my James-built Rainbow Brite wheels in the back seat.

I called Pro Cyclery.

“Hi, yes, we have a wait, maybe a week and a half - maybe June 2nd, but we’re
not as bad as a lot of other shops.”

I bit back tears and pointed the van south.

I had pulled myself together when I arrived Pro Cyclery. I looked at the woman
in her padded bike shorts wheeling and dealing with an employee and shuddered.
The people here are not going to understand about my Rivendell. I stood in line
and listened to another employee explain to a mother-son duo that he was so
sorry, he could not get parts. Parts are sold out everywhere, all over town and
even overseas. I said a silent prayer of thanks that I had brought all my own
parts. (How did James and Candice get them?!) I was waited on by a guy who
seemed confused about my dyno. “I don’t see how we’re going to hide that wire,”
he said. “You’re not,” I said, “It’s going to wrap around the fork. Say, um do
you guys do dyno? I have a website if it’s confusing...” I gave him a list of
wants for repairs. It was a lot. He was a bit withered after we got through it
all. He said some of this was above his expertise level but “Jaime” had a lot
of experience and would know. “We’ll call you and give you an estimate for the
work soon. But there will be a wait for it to be complete.” I assured him it
was fine and I left.

I drove away, Clem-less, and felt unsettled. Thirty minutes later the phone
rang and the shop wanted to give me my estimate for the repair work. “And let
me say,” he said, “All three of us are STOKED to work on your bike. We never
see bikes like this come in here. Someone took a lot of care building this
bike; we are really excited to work on it.”

Well, I went from the lowest of lows to a HIGH. My bike is going to get done.
I think it will be done right. And I would venture to guess they will get it
done sooner than promised. I can hardly wait

Shoji - I want to believe the mindset of leaving well enough alone is possible,
but I think it will be a fight! Has anyone dialed in a bike and then left it
alone from that day forward? Chime in here.

Joe - silver Rich-built wheels are always a thing of beauty. You’re not riding
a goofy Clem, you chose wisely.

Joyce - Oh, how I want these for you and your Clementine! I have been thinking
about you lately, wondering how it’s going with your hip. My left knee bothers
me (no diagnosis yet since I was going to make an appt at the time COVID hit),
and it’s made worse when I push really hard on hills. I’m hoping these wheels
take some of the strain out, though the challenge has been good for my quads.

Andy - am I reading it right that this girl has a Riv on her post-grad agenda?
Which one will she get? Yes, I’m so tired of having my light taking up space on
my bars (I’ve got way too much stuff on them but have declared all of it
essential), and wondering if it’s low and needs charging. I have no way of
knowing when the battery is low, but it does flicker when the end is near,
which always stresses me out. Enough of that, welcome, dyno.

Thanks, Rusty! I love the look! I am going to ask Analog to make the wheels for
my mixte, too, just have to decide what look we’re going for. I should probably
choose something sleek and classy, but it’s pretty hard not to choose all the
color.

George - ha! You’re right.

Brian - thanks. I’ll show the mechanics if they seem at all uncertain.

Today’s the day I drop off the bike. The area in which I live has slim pickings
for bike shops. My favorite closed its doors without warning several months
back. REI installed my fenders wrong and caused damage to a bike I hired them
to pack, plus they’re closed due to COVID. One remaining shop has a 2 week wait
before they can take you. I called 2 shops deeper into the City and both were
swamped as well. The first took my name and put me on a wait list. He said he
cannot fit one more bike in his shop and that after he takes the bike, it will
be another 2 week wait. I left my name a week ago, and I’m still on the wait
list. I called yet another and they told me they stopped taking bikes and
closed shop for 2 business days just to catch up on the work they already had.
He told me to come by when my wheels arrive, but I don’t know how long his line
is. I’ll find out today.

I have the cast-off 52 cm Clem H in the garage, so I won’t be totally Riv-less,
but it will be an adjustment for me. I rode it awhile back and thought, “WHY
are these bars so far away from me?!” The bike has Bosco Bullmoose bars. 🤣

It's all impossibly cool and rad and other words denoting coolness and radness
I can't think of right now. Check out the spoke nipples, they look like the

I can't wait to see this built up and in a hundred pics and videos on

Re: [RBW] Re: It’s dull around here, let me bring some color

2020-05-20 Thread Leah Peterson
Doug,

Well. You’re not wrong. But you know what else? I blame all of you. I used to
be a perfectly reasonable person (with a disconcerting affinity for sparkle),
but now look at how things have gotten. I was tickled to swap my Walmart
Special for a Betty Foy and I was happy for so many years. But then I started
haunting this place and hearing about long chainstays and higher bars and fancy
wheels and now I have Rainbow Brite wheels that cost more than my bike.

I regret nothing. Those wheels are so 🤩.

But, mark my words, after this bike and the mixte (which I’m still hoping isn’t
a ‘Pus) I’m swearing off improvements. I’m going to ride and be satisfied and
immune to all the bike charms. For at least 10 years...

Hold me to this,
Leah
