I put on the Microshift sealed-bearing pulleys when I found them really too 
cheap on amazon (he doubled the price the next week).

Also, big pulleys on Shimano RDs will increase the bending stress on their 
built-in stress riser - I've counted 5 cracked there with normal-sized 
pulleys, and no doubt there are more.

Reed, that’s my recollection too. However, Shimano did the large pulley thing 
to increase chain wrap and not to reduce friction. To be honest, this friction 
reason may be measurable, but inconsequential (much like extreme 
weight-weenieism). 1-odd Watts of savings? Pfft! My farts have more thrust that 
that!

Much earlier, in fact! The first one I'm aware of was the Dura Ace 7700 GS
from 2001:
