Re: [RBW] Pano's built up Rivendell custom on Rivendell flicker

2017-03-24 Thread Tim Gavin
The levers on Pano's build appear to be Origin8 Classique levers.

https://stuffdavelikes.wordpress.com/2013/02/25/diacompe-and-trp-drilled-brake-levers/

They're pretty good for the price, but not as nice as TRP RRL's. But in
this sideways application, you're not using the biggest advantage of the
RRLs (ergonomics), so the Origin8's may be the better lever on Albastaches.

Personally, I used non-aero brake levers with moustache bars. The cable
routing out the tops just works perfectly with those bars.

If I did convert the Rom are there any tips? I assume I would need knew brakes,

Owner's choice, I guess. It does look nifty that way -- if it's an

Jan showed a setup like that in BQ last year. The purpose is to
support the front section of the fender. If you have a long front
fender and no rack to tie the front of the fender to for support,
the front of the fender can wobble around and that eventually will
cause the fender to break. Pano was justifiably quite proud of the
job he did bending the stay to make it look like that.

I had a similar situation with my George Longstaff, but because I
have no mid-fork braze-on to anchor the extra fender stay to I had
to fasten both the front and the rear fender stay to the fork eyelet:

As you can see, clearances are very tight, and you have to measure
the stay exactly to leave room. What you can't see is the Presta
valve lock not (aka "dork nut") that I'm using as a spacer between
the two R clips.

It's a Joe Bell paint job, original, not a respray.

Looks to be 650B also? Matching orange nipples is a nice touch...

No, it's got Compass Bon Jon Pass 700x35Cs on it.

When you say Nitto "Hi-Riser" do you mean the Dirt Drop Style, regular

[RBW] Recognizing Genius: R14 in back AND front

2017-03-24 Thread Bill Lindsay
There was a Riv email sent out today, showing Grant's personal Appaloosa,
in Silver. I'm not a green-bike guy, so I deeply approve of the Silver.
Several folks have run a Mark's Rack as a tiny rear rack, and that's
clever. Several folks have gone out of their way to bolt a Mark's Rack to
the fork crown of their Rivendell, because the fork crown kind of demanded
it, and that's fine, too. Grant's bike has the same R14 rear rack on the
back AND on the front. For whatever reason, that setup strikes me as a
total genius move. I wish I'd thought of it.

[RBW] Re: Transporting a fendered tandem

2017-03-24 Thread Michael Hechmer
Tule & Atoc market a tandem carrier which, like the Yakima clamps the fork
dropouts and uses a swing out arm to facilitate mounting. However that
rack only uses a pin to secure that swing out arm while the Yakima uses a
beefy screw. I'm sure the Thule rack works fine but the additional play
always made me nervous.

[RBW] Pano's built up Rivendell custom on Rivendell flicker

2017-03-24 Thread panog
Thanks for the kind words guys!

The bike came out looking and feeling fantastic! I've got a little over 500
miles on it so far and it feels like the cockpit is dialed in. The fit is
perfect! Cant add pics through my iPad so added a few more at the flickr site:
Side view https://flic.kr/p/TbtsBm
As it is now https://flic.kr/p/TbtsDf And https://flic.kr/p/T3ET9D dressed
for commuting duty.

The Albastache and the bar-ends worked out great. The bars, as set, are very
comfortable and the upright position is great for commuting as visibility is
greatly increased. My concern was how they would behave out on the open road
and head-on winds but so far so good. Longest ride till now about 45 miles and
head-on winds in the high teens - low twenties needed steering holding from the
brake levers to reduce my frontal area somewhat. Not the same as with drops
but quite doable. Power developed holding from around the bar-ends is not as
much as when less upright but this is to be expected so no surprises there.
Overall and for 80%+ of what the intended use of the bike is, the Albastache
looks to be the perfect bar for it.

It took me the better part of a day to dial in the fenders and get a uniform
line around the tire without any undue stress. I followed most of Peter
Weigle's tips setting them up. Things like no leather washers at the
fender-stay interphase and decoupling only at the brake bridge and dropouts.
The braze-on under the fork worked out great and the fender dimple there was
much easier to get right. The VO's now come with aluminum stick-on
reinforcement for underneath the fender at the crown and brake bridge which I
included. If I had seen Anton's latest development in time maybe I would have
done that instead as it looks sharp but right now I'm not taking them apart.
The bended upper front stay is "borrowed" out of Peter's photo stream; more for
the look than out of necessity although it does really secure the front end of
the fender from shaking when on extended rough pavement.

Brakes are Origin 8 Classique Sports. On the fence on these so far as the lever
feels kinda of flimsy. Wanted to hide the cables as much as possible and the
flaring up of some of the Evo variety (i.e. TRP) sticks up too much passed the
top of the bars. I thought of flipping the TRP but then the cable comes out on
the top which I did not like either. Still on the look-out on these.

I had a Tubus Airy Ti laying around that I put on the back and then added a
pair of Multisacks for lightweight, stay-on the bike, panniers. Front rack I
will not put on but I did get the Hub Area Rack and bags to use in trips where
additional carrying capacity is needed.

Mounting the front light was a close call. The "shortie" bracket was too short
and the back of the light housing could not clear the straddle bridge so its
longer version was used. It pushed the light out from rubbing against the
straddle bridge but, I think, it pushed it a bit more than I would have liked.
I may attempt to reform the bracket later on although the bolt head clearance
from the Paul's is next to nothing.

The bar is double wrapped with the cork look-a-like tape but as soon as my
lugged quill stem comes in I have a nice leather Berthoud waiting for it.

Joe Bell's paint job is simply amazing. I have been looking for imperfections,
runouts or whatever but there aren't any. The other day I noticed he had put a
clear protectant strip on the left seat stay right where the head of the Zefal
would have scraped against it. It doesn't as the pump spring keeps it a good
5mm away but if it ever did, the paint wont be scratched. This attention to
detail I have not seen before and have had a few customs in my life.

All in all, its been a wonderfull experience and the end result justified the
weight.

Thanks! actually that is my first hurdle. I am trying not to spend a ton of
money on a stove that may or may not get that use. I still have some
wanderlust in my soul and hope to do some sub 24O outings but again I am a
newbie at all this and don't have much gear. I have found a few videos
online showing how to make a simple stove out of a beer can which uses
alcohol for fuel but I am not sure if that is best for my needs. So yes I
would be very interested in learning about what would make a good stove.

Yeah I saw the newsletter too and although I'm not in the market for a Hunq
I read the newsletter twice thinking I somehow missed the article. I do
like the idea of selecting a color in general though.

Re: [RBW] REMINDER: Coffee Outside Bay Area

2017-03-24 Thread Kellie Stapleton
I’ve been using an alcohol stove off the bike for the last few years and also
used them camping. They work well, nothing to recycle like a canister stove,
and one uses denatured alcohol which you can find at hardware and paint stores.
Also cheap; a gallon will last you forever for about $12. I bought a little kit
called the Caldera Keg and it’s in the picture announcing the last coffee
outside. Here’s a link:
https://www.traildesigns.com/stoves/caldera-keg-f-stove-system
 Only downside
for alcohol is below freezing. There’s canister stoves like this:
https://www.rei.com/product/114890/msr-pocketrocket-2-stove
 but more
expensive and then you collect empty canisters. They’re efficient and boil
water fast. I’ve also used the Whisperlite which lasted about 15; used when I
backpack. This has a refillable bottle:
https://www.rei.com/product/830342/msr-whisperlite-universal-backpacking-stove

a little more finicky than a canister, but you can use in any weather and
boils water fast.

I like the Caldera keg kit because the keg acts as the pot and is included in
the price. Not too expensive. Also very stable and has wind blocking inherently
built in. Here’s a good resource: http://www.bikepacking.com/all-posts/

[RBW] Re: Advice on Choosing a New Rivendell Appaloosa, Hillborne or Clem

2017-03-24 Thread Joe Bernard
The Romulus might make a good 650B dropbar bike, but I don't see it working
with upright bars. I owned a 55cm Rom which was borderline too big for me, but
even then the toptube-length-intended-for-drops would, I think, have created a
crowded cockpit with an Albatross bar. I think the Appaloosa - which is
intended for reachback bars and touring loads - is the better plan here.

When I did something like that ( on this machine:

because I didn't want to piggyback two fender stays onto one mountpoint --
it's harder to adjust the fender line when there are two stays wiggling
around.

Rear rack up front? Approve! And the Silver? My Huge Rosco will sport the
same color, minus the cream. Same bars too.

Some of you may recall I fabbed a Blackburn up front on a Bombadil years
ago.

Then I went all crazy and cut up a Blackburn rear and reassembled it to fit
an altered Trek up front. I also went crazy in other ways on this build,
like matching paint on the Silca track pump.

Re: [RBW] Re: Advice on Choosing a New Rivendell Appaloosa, Hillborne or Clem

2017-03-24 Thread Bob K.
I'm the proud owner of a 2009 Sam, and I love it. Went out on a two-day trip
last week with front panniers, basket, and bikepacking-style seat bag, and it
did everything I asked of it and more, including some windy but not technical
single track riding in the dark. I also love stripping it of racks and bags and
going for a fast (for me, AKA slow) ride up and down the local rollers.

All of that said, if I were buying one Rivendell right now, even given how much
I love my Sam, I'd buy an Appaloosa. The additional clearance provides a bit
more versatility, and since you're looking for an upright build, the Joe would
be perfect with the Choco Norm setup. (The Clem is clearly a good call for this
very same reason.) If you're worried that you'll want to go drop bars later,
though, go Sam.
