When I've purchased shunts from AEE, they've been the "good " ones,
solid base, they look like Deltecs.

That series of shunt is pretty cheap in small quantities. Less than $30.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Radian orders hardware problems

2018-12-04 Thread Kienan Maxfield
I have installed a whole lot of GSLCs and Radians. That is the primary product
I've installed over the last 5 years. I have always purchased the Radian with
the GSLC175-PV-120/240 which comes pre-wired with three shunts etc.

I have never had any problems with missing or broken/cracked parts but I have
seen the wiring come loose in shipping. I saw one shunt that melted due to an
under-torqued bolt.

I had a Flex-Net that was pre-wired wrong. That issue cost me an extra trip to
the remote site at over 8 hours of drive time alone because the initial
misdiagnosis was a faulty Flex-Net. That one took me a long time to diagnose
because I was operating under the assumption that the factory wouldn't have
wired it wrong. Of course, tech support never guessed that was the issue
either. This was the one time that I felt like the manufacturer should have
definitely compensated me for some of my costs... but I didn't figure that
they'd go for that idea so I didn't ask.

I have had a lot of warranty issues with the earlier Radians and the old Mate
3, but so far I've had really good luck recent Radians for off-grid use and
with the new Mate 3s. The strangest issue I've had (and still have) with a
Radian is that at one site, every once in a while, the grid-tied radian gets
stuck in export mode and it'll drain the battery to somewhere around 85% or
lower, sometimes exporting until 1 A.M. It is very infrequent and impossible to
predict so that issue has never been solved.

Thanks,
Kienan

We mostly install 8048 inverters. Regardless, you need all of the hardware for
installing a 4048 or an 8048 and any GSLC. Not having them is a huge headache
and cost. I can’t believe Outback is still letting this happen.

I would familiarize myself with what is needed and inventory as soon as the
equipment is received. Here is a partial list, from memory, and partial photo
attached. I can’t guarantee this list is complete, but it is a start.

1. 2 or 4 8 MM bolts and washers for Pos and Neg ports.

2. Remove and check shunt for cracks.

3. All Neg bus bar parts. Includes two or three bars, 8mm nuts and washers
(photo below).

4. All Pos bus bar parts. Includes two or three bars, 8mm nuts and washers
(photo below).

5. Flat plate with 10 holes for ganging inverter breakers (photo below).

6. Screws to mount breakers and FNDC to panels.

7. Dead-front screws.

8. Cover screws.

[cid:image004.jpg@01D48BC6.14159050]

Some of the above parts ship with the inverters, some with the GSLCs.

When you are aligning negative busses to bolt them to bottom of inverter, be

PS: The heart of the system is a dedicated 24 volt battery array left over
from a generator sync system. The, CBW, router and modem all float on this
battery bank. The draw is minimal and the cost of an outboard battery
array or one powered by a converter is justified by the increased
reliability inherent with a battery powered system.

I am interested in your control by web solution for the mate lock up. Is
that a specific controller that does that or have you modified something?
Could it be used to reboot routers/modems as well?

Thanks

whenever the Mate locks up.

2. On one installation I have a Control By Web unit ping both Mate3
units every 5 minutes. If either fails to respond after 3 attempts, a
relay opens and closes the Orange/white leads which power cycles the
Mates.

Locking up of Mates is a fact of life with Outback equipment. I love the

Hello All

And

Hello Jay

I just asked the tech support boss on this as I had no idea.

He has a test setup that allows him to switch individuals lines on the cat5
cables.

We can duplicate Jay’s screen shot below by opening the some of the lines
to the cat 5 cable.

So as a start try replacing the cat5 between the Mate3S and the Hub.

Using the silicone grease that comes with a Mate is never a bad idea.

If your customer does not have a cable on hand I would try removing the
cable several times perhaps that could help to dislodge any corrosion or
dust on the connections.

I hope this helps.

One is a big system ( 2 radians and 5 CC). Of course its a long ways away
and no there isn’t internet so no OpticsRE.

Its been reprogramed with latest REV firmware. No change.

Wrenches:

I am reaching out to this group to see if anyone is having the problems we are.
At least 50% of the Radian inverters and/or GSLC cabinets we order arrive
missing some part or piece required to install the inverter.  Sometimes it is
one or more of the bus bars to connect the main DC breaker to the inverter,
sometimes it is one of the 8mm nuts required on these bus bars, and the most
recent order, and on our most recent order, one of the inverters was missing
the 8mm bolts and washers required to connect the bus bars to the inverter plus
and minus ports.

We have been having this problem for years.  Has anyone else experienced this,
or is it just me?

Also, the shunts provided in the GSLC cabinets are crap.  It used to be the
shunts had a solid base.  Now the bases are hollow.  We use to see these shunt
bases cracked almost 100% of the time in shipping because the long,
cantilevered negative bus bar was entirely supported at one end by the shunt.
Any modest bump on the GSLC cabinet broke the shunt.  Now we receive them
intact because Alpha has stopped installing the shunt prior to shipping.  The
problem persists, however, because if you put the slightest pressure on the
negative bus bar to align the holes to install the bolts (if they arrive),
minimal strain in the base of the shunt cracks it.  See the photos below of the
old versus new style shunt.

Each of these problems slows down an install and creates frustration.  This
persistent pattern is really not acceptable.

Lones, please investigate these problems and let us know if they can be
rectified.  And please, send me a set of the 8mm bolts.

Thank you,

William Miller

Does anyone know where I might find a relay / contactor with a 48V DC coil and
50 A 120/240 Vac contacts. Among the many suppliers I've contacted are
Grainger, Digi-Key, Mouser, the WWW, etc. The system I've ended up designing
with what I have found is a kluge to just have a Morning Star Relay Driver
disconnect the output of an inverter.. AC coupling 48 V inverters seems to
always have the glitch of finding a relay.

Catalogues will show these, but suppliers don't have them.

Thank you,

William,

I wish I didn’t know what you are talking about. I too have encountered missing
parts and have dealt with the crappy shunt. I switched to purchasing pre-wired
power centers built by a company in Mount Shasta. They will accommodate my
requests for small deviations from standard layout. I’m curious how many
problems with inverters and boards folks see. 2016-17 saw me swapping out a lot
of components. One Radian was 1/2 DOA, and another lost an inverter after a
week.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Radian orders hardware problems

2018-12-04 Thread cwarfel

none of these problems. We have installed 4048's and I am wondering if
these problems are with 8048s or 4048s? Thank you, Chris Warfel
