[RE-wrenches] Anyone in the Maryland region want lots of used solar panels?

2024-03-01 Thread Dave Tedeyan via RE-wrenches
If anyone in the Maryland region is interested in lots of used solar panels
in the 235-300w range, send me a direct message. Sounds like they are
upgrading some older sites. Here is a message I received from an old friend:

As part of some of our upcoming portfolios there are old panels that we
might be removing as a favor to the customers or to increase productivity.
A couple of them are just 20-50 panels, but there is one that is about 1900
panels. The panels are generally old though and in the 235W-300W range.
My question to you as someone who does small scale solar and deeply cares
about the environmental portion, is do you know if there are groups that
would want these older panels. I have talked to some of the larger
recyclers and they don't want these to use as panels but would obviously be
happy to have us pay them to recycle. I wasn't sure if you were aware of
any groups that would want to have these older panels and actually use them
for installation. These are in the Maryland region, but would be happy to
have any contacts.

AES is closed loop with 7 inverter manufacturers (not Outback and I do not know
why) including SMA. Not sure on the particulars but you should check them out
with Lync2 interface. I just use them closed loop with XW and they can charge
40% faster.

I recently went through this wxwrcise with an old customer of mine as well.
I spent a lot of time researching options. Manufacturers and conversations with
SMA regarding their support of a conversion to Life storage.
Bottom line for me was that SMA does not support any lithium battery
manufacturer available in the US.
I stuck with exact replacement batteries
for those that were exhausted, Concorde AGM's.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Older Sunny Islands charging newer Lithium's

2024-03-01 Thread Mac Lewis via RE-wrenches
Hi Peter,

The Sunny Islands will work with Lithium, but there can be challenges. The
Blue Ion to Sunny Island communication works really well, you need a Namaka
box for that. This would be a great but expensive way to go.

The difficulties with Sunny Island and no communication to BMS is when you
need the Sunny Island to start the generator at a specific state of charge
or also know when to shut down. The open loop parameters seem to work just
fine for charging.

One cheap solution that I think would work well is to add a Victron Smart
shunt, Cerbo and perhaps a screen. You can manipulate the SOC algorithm in
the smart shunt to work well and turn the generator start duties over to
the Cerbo. You may also be able to externally trigger the Sunny Island to
shut off (haven't looked deeply into this).

Have a good weekend!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Battery Electrolyte Level Measuring

2024-03-01 Thread Mark Downing via RE-wrenches
I found these photo sensors on Wish for $2.69.
Detection distance is adjustable from 3 to 80cm. Run on 5V supply.
I bought a couple and they work great. Cheap enough to buy a few and play with
them.
I wonder if they will detect the surface of a liquid?
If so, this could easily be used by mounting it through a plastic disk and
touching it to the cell opening.
(Uh oh, looks like I just gave myself another job . . .)

Hi William;

I agree with your original premise that checking levels is difficult by eye.
Also, I would add that many of my clients chronically over fill the cells,
leading to acid loss and severe corrosion of the connectors, battery box, and
floor.

Your float is an interesting idea, but personally I think you're inviting more
acid contact not less, by putting the probe down into each cell. This is
similar to checking specific gravity. I think a no contact method, like a
laser measuring device would be the way to go. I see several on Amazon in the
$25 range. I have a Bosch that's quite accurate; I tried it on some bottles
with fluid in them, and it seemed to work well. I'll try and remember to take
out with me on the next job with FLA.

Thanks to everyone who responded to the original question. The information was
valuable but did not directly approach the question. I apologize if my replies
hinted at frustration. I know everyone is trying to help.

This subject is important enough to me that I thought I’d take another run at
explaining what I am trying to accomplish:

I do not like looking into battery cells. It is dangerous. With some of the
larger battery banks looking into the cell requires climbing up onto and
kneeling on the tops of the batteries, increasing the danger and adding
discomfort and future wardrobe malfunctions. Determining electrolyte level by
looking into cells gives inaccurate results.

Safety glasses help but spilling acid on the unprotected area of my face around
the glasses is not ideal. A face shield provides better protection but when
bending my neck sharply downwards the shield bumps into my chest, is
uncomfortable and obstructs my view.

There has to be a better way!

Here is where I am heading with an idea to provide a safer way to measure
electrolyte levels. I have mocked up a prototype in my kitchen to illustrate.

The idea is a float with a scale attached. The scale is calibrated to show the
desired fluid level and how much too low or high the level is.

I was hoping someone had already gone down this road and I could steal- I mean
learn from- their ideas.

I will keep trying to create something viable. Already I have something I can
use, it’s just a bit hokey. Ideally whatever I conjure up can also be deployed
while filling batteries by whatever means you have at hand so the process can
be safer, quicker and more accurate. Everyone who works with flooded batteries
needs this.

I hope this explanation makes more sense.

William

PS: I have seen electrolyte level gauges on the internet. None that I have
seen quite fit the bill. Here is
one
that is not adjustable but comes in two fixed levels. If you know of a
product that does what I need, or at least can spark some creativity, please
let me know.

PPS: Ideally whatever I come up with is cheap enough that one or two can be
left in place to allow checking levels at a glance.
