[RE-wrenches] Enphase IQ8 to ESS Ratio

2022-12-06 Thread Jason Szumlanski via RE-wrenches
I have seen in press releases that there is no limit to the number of IQ8
microinverters on the roof relative to the battery size. I can't remember
if I saw this in Enphase marketing or directly in the documentation. But in
reality, there is a limit. It's 64A of inverter output current since the
Smart Controller only accepts an 80A PV breaker. This is a limitation of
the rapid shutdown functionality.

With IQ7 there is a 1.5x limit for PV to the battery inverter output
rating. However, you can actually install 96A of inverter output. You can
have up to 64A on the PV breaker and up to 32A on the load side of the
smart controller (or any combination up to 96A inverter output rating as
long as the PV breaker component does not exceed 80A).

Am I missing something here? It seems like the IQ8 is very limiting if you
need a lot of PV paired with a maxed-out battery system. That's a
strong reason to use IQ7 over IQ8 in some scenarios.

[RE-wrenches] Enphase IQ8+ max continuous output

2022-08-11 Thread Carl Adams via RE-wrenches
Hello Wrenches,
I am having an issue with a utility submission. We are using the IQ8+ on
the project. The SolarEdge Spec sheet shows 0.290 kW as max continuous
output. The utility rejected this saying they are using 0.298 kW based on
the CA energy commission rating. Looking for clarification or if anyone
else has run into this issue.
Here is the link to the SC commission rating

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase IQ8

2022-04-14 Thread Jason Szumlanski via RE-wrenches
The lack of clarity on the IQ7 line as a whole has been a bit
disconcerting. There is a serious disconnect between what my distributors
think and what Enphase reps say about the future. I know supply chain
issues are tough these days, but come on... Just tell us the truth. Enphase
hasn't done great on product rollouts recently (I point to the botched
Encharge 10T fiasco). We need clarity to be able to keep our job pipelines
full and inventories matched up.

That said, how many residential 96 cell panels are really popular now that
Panasonic bit the dust? I can see both the X variant and the IQ7 line as a
whole disappearing. That would be unfortunate given the price premium with
IQ8 and limited utility/advantage in many instances.

Marco: I'd like to learn more about this Equinox development. I wasn't
aware of a 96 cell AC module. I'm not Sunpower dealer, but like to keep
tabs on all available options. Is there a spec sheet available? I couldn't
find it.

Hey Marco,

I have been hunting down the IQ7X for 96 cell mods recently. From our
Enphase rep, the IQ7X is being phased out. I have an order in now and am
being told ETA is around August and we won't be getting any more after
that. Food for thought.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Enphase IQ8 systems

2022-04-13 Thread Jason Szumlanski via RE-wrenches
I believe that applies to all microinverters from the M215 to the IQ8. The
available power is additive as long as there is battery capacity and the
micro inverters are not off due to the battery being at full capacity. If
the battery is at full capacity, the IQ8 should still be able to supplement
heavy loads, but others will not react fast enough if they have already
been commanded off.

We always size our batteries alone to have sufficient power for the
expected loads. Some people have asked if they can just use air
conditioning during the day when the sun is shining and get a smaller
battery. I decline to design systems that way. I believe it would be too
unreliable.

Good Morning Wrenches,

I am working through the Enphase training for their battery system while
simultaneously designing a backup system. Cart is in front of the horse
just a bit!

Does anyone know if you are using an IQ8 roof top micro, does its output
capacity add to the battery output capacity for baseline power output when
the sun is shining? Or is this a bad assumption? The fact you can do
"solar only" backup suggests you can.

For example, can I say (*during sunny conditions)*:

Battery Output + AC solar output = nominal output wattage available for
backup?

How are these systems performing in the field?

Thanks as always!
