Thanks Bill, and everyone else: When I was a CA solar contractor, I designed
and oversaw the installation of over 20 “grid-tied battery back up systems”. I
now have an approved application into the Southern California Edison SGIP
program, spec’ing a 16 kWh and 8 kW “smart” e-storage system. The system will
use Li-ion batteries (the exact manu and chemistry escapes me right now). I
don’t quite understand the relative lack of traction regarding Li for small
scale remote/recreational applications. I understand a little about BMS, enough
to be dangerous. So perhaps the biggest question I have is why NOT design-in a
Li battery system as long as it come wrapped with a BSM? Any
brands/technologies recommended? Also thanks for the info on 36 cell vs. 60
cell PV modules. If I were to specify a system from scratch (and that is the
direction I’m heading), I would go with 60 cell modules (even 72 cell modules)
and a MPPT CC that can handle the voltage and current range. And thanks for the
recommendation on AC vs DC powered refrigerators. I don’t want to handle the
service call! Thanks to everyone for their input. Peter Peter T. Parrish

They are expensive. But from a technical point of view, very few people
understand (or know how to use) the concept of “Days of Autonomy”. I personally
use a 3X factor but if I want to be extra conservative and the application is
is critical I use a 4X factor.

I would not go DC for starters.  I lived with a DC fridge for years and
would not wish that on anyone in the 21st century. Regular Energy Star
rated models are very close to the Sunfrost energy numbers, but are much
cheaper, are readily available, and can be serviced by regular appliance
repair folks.

On the module type/ price, we switch to much lower cost 60 cell modules
at around 300 watts these days, and use an MPPT controller.  We're only
using 12 v modules for very, very small systems.

As far as small power packages, we've always built are own. Goal Zero is
more portable/ backpacking stuff;  I have a fold up 5 w Module from Goal
zero that can charge a cell phone while camping. They're great for stuff
like that, but they're going to be way out of the budget for a permanent
mounted larger system.

Contact us offline, if you want, we could possibly help put together a
low cost package system for this application.  Not many solar companies
want to mess with sub Kw systems these days, but there certainly is a
need, as you've found.

The site is truly off-grid and currently uses propane to power three
refrigerators and cook stoves. There is no space heating for the
single occupancy rooms as of yet. But that’s another problem.

We are looking to specify DC refrigerators and PV-powered battery
storage for the River Haven project. We are looking at the Goal Zero
Yeti-3000 system (3000 Whr, 500 full discharge cycles, to 80% residual
capacity) at a sale price of $2,400 but are finding the extra cost of
their PV modules quite steep. And looking at other 36-cell (12 volt)
modules, I can’t find anything for less than $1.10/W.

Since Goal Zero is looking at the recreational market, I thought that
there might be other companies with comparable product offerings that
are focusing on other markets like developing countries.

Any advice would be appreciated and you may contact us off-line.

Every one of these I've seen so fardating back over 10
yearsdrastically undersizes the battery bank, I assume because that's
the expensive part.
