[RE-wrenches] Solarworld Warranty Claims Through Sunpower

2024-01-10 Thread Sam Haraldson via RE-wrenches
Wrenches,

A colleague is inquiring about how to proceed with Solarworld warranty
claims after its 2018 acquisition of the Solarworld brand. If anyone can
provide successes or failures along those lines I would appreciate being
able to share that info with my colleague. If I am able to determine more
detail elsewhere and anyone on this list would like to have that info
shared with them please let me know off-list.

Sincerely,
Sam

[RE-wrenches] Solarworld Warranty

2022-07-11 Thread Rich Nicol via RE-wrenches
Hello Wrenches

Does anybody have a contact for whoever the 3rd party is that supposedly
will honor Solarworld warranties? Also, have any of you pursued warranty
assistance due to issues with the Amphenol connectors (melting/arc faults)

I had thought the issue was only with Amphenol to MC4 connections but it
seems that Amphenol to Amphenol connections are also problematic.

Thank You!
Rich

SnapnRack has a ¾” thick clamp that creates a 7/8” min gap between the module

Suggestions?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Solarworld 285 watt end frames

2017-05-24 Thread Dave Angelini Offgrid Solar

I think my "wattsuns" look fine with just wire ties and not really any
special effort. It does sound nice to go in the rail.
I can put a pix in here later when I get home if you ask? Not worried
about squirrels here but I would like to get some of the metal bird
protector (often seen at airports) to keep them from sitting up top and
doing their business. Anyone know who has it?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Solarworld 285 watt end frames

2017-05-24 Thread AE Solar
With Solarworld/SnapNRack we run wires in the rail and use clips on the
long edge of the frame when needed. SnapNRack has a clip that fits in the
upper rail groove to hold wires down into it. The snap n rack part you are
referencing (I think they call it 'box frame adapter') is good if you want
to attach squirrel netting to the short edge of the panels, but it's bulky
and expensive. I don't think it will do much for attaching wire clips.

[RE-wrenches] Solarworld 285 watt end frames

2017-05-24 Thread Dana
I am installing SolarWorld 285 w modules for our new home on Array
Technologies dual axis trackers [we are in a canyon].

The side rails of the frames are typical with a flange however the short end
frame is this little kind of “I” beam that does not allow for any wire
clips.

I am wondering what other folks have done in this situation, short of
drilling the module frame?

SnapnRack has a ¾” thick clamp that creates a 7/8” min gap between the
module columns that is rather unsightly.

Suggestions?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Solarworld

2016-01-26 Thread Jason Szumlanski
I was fortunate enough to smell a rat and avoid the ASP fraudulent UL label
fiasco, and as a matter of policy I refuse to buy anything from anyone but
an established and respected distributor at a price that is realistic and
sustainable. Closeouts on discontinued wattages from reputable dealers and
bulk purchases from the manufacturer are reasonable risks, but that's as
far as I would go.

Incidentally, I'm servicing an Eaton/ASP PV250 inverter tomorrow that has
failed (again). The whole mess is a lesson to avoid "too good to be true"
prices. This poor system owner can't get anyone to help him...
understandably. I always tell consumers the ASP story to scare them
straight about low prices.

So far I have purchased mostly from known distributors, so haven't
encountered the cheap knockoff issue. Is this happening much? What is the
evidence that this is gong on?

I've seen ads claiming SolarWorld modules at over $0.30 / Watt cheaper
than the REC modules which I get good pricing on. I don't know the
companies. For all I know, they could be counterfeit. They have definitely
been advertised as cheap at times as the very lowest end of the Chinese
imports. When something seems too good to be true, it usually isn't.

Thanks,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Solarworld

2016-01-21 Thread drake . chamberlin
Can they really get away with selling fake Solarworld modules? Is there no
way to verify there manufacturer? It would seem that Solarworld would want
to bust a company selling modules labeled with there name that weren't
theirs.

If they are old stock at cheap prices, they might be good for some
systems. If they are fake, then there would be no warranty and could
likely have other issues.

Has anyone actually seen knock off modules or seen reliable information
that documents their existence?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Solarworld diodes

2014-03-01 Thread Exeltech
Ron...

Bill's comments below are all absolutely excellent and spot-on - particularly
his mention about the UL1703 certification.

That said .. if you decide to proceed with the repair, I'd like to add a
several additional details to the process:

1. Ensure the j-box you purchase is certified by a NRTL as a recognized
component for use on PV. Each lab has its own markings to indicate a
recognized component. Cheap non-recognized parts may warp or fall apart in
time.

2. Install the diode in the correct orientation relative to the PV polarity.
The diode should be reverse-biased (not conducting) during unshaded operation
of the PV module.

3. The diode current rating Bill mentions below is a *minimum*. If you have a
choice between diodes that meet this minimum, or diodes that are rated [say]
25-50% more current than the minimum, opt for the higher-current part. I've
seen diodes in j-boxes that were hot enough to boil water (literally) after
conducting for a period of time. J-boxes are not conducive to heat dissipation.

4. Make all connections to the diode as solid as possible to minimize the
contact resistance. Oxidation in poor connections will cause the contact
points to overheat, leading to eventual failure of first the connection .. and
then the diode and possibly the other components, including the j-box.

5. Suggestion #5 has two parts: a) Use silicone *adhesive* to attach the
junction box to the module. Silicone adhesive is NOT silicone caulk nor
silicone sealant. b) Only use a silicon adhesive that's approved for use on
PV. Anything less will not stay adhered to the PV backsheet for the life of
the PV. Dow-Corning part numbers 737 or 804 are suitable, as are others. The
primary difference between the 737 and 804 is the cure time. 804 is faster (~8
hrs vs. 24 hrs), but cost a bit more $ than the 737 last time I bought some.

6. Ensure PV backsheet and the mating surface of the j-box are clean and free
of any oil (i.e. from your skin, etc.). Denatured 90%+ alcohol and Kim-wipes
(or similar) can be used to prep both surfaces. Dow and others also sell a
primer that can be used for this purpose.

7. Apply two long pieces of tape to the box lid in a plus pattern *before*
you affix the j-box to the PV. This tape will be used later. Next, apply
adhesive to the j-box flange evenly around the entire perimeter. No gaps or
thin spots. Press the j-box down evenly, so you get equal amounts of adhesive
squeezed out around the entire perimeter of the box. Feed the PV connection
tabs up through the opening in the j-box in the process. Finally, use the tape
to secure the box in place while the adhesive cures. Do not make any internal
connections at this time.

8. After the adhesive has cured .. make all of the connections. Soldered
connections (done properly) are superior to crimped or compressive connections.
Some j-boxes use compressive connections only. Do your best with what you
have.

Test and make sure everything is working properly. If so .. congratulations.

Technically removing the junction box has voided the warranty and the UL
listing of the module, field modification is not covered by the manual.
Solarworld probably will not accept a warranty claim after the customer has
done that. Considering that diode failure is relatively common ( Schottkey
diodes are susceptible to surge damage from lightning and near strikes among
others), I am disappointing that Solarworld would encapsulate diodes that
cannot be field repairable, unless they are using the newer surge resistant
switching diodes that have a better chance of a 30 year life ( and cost 10X
cheap schottkey didoes).

That being said and assuming this is an off grid application that is under the
AHJ's radar, there are replacement junction boxes available to salavage the
situation, just make sure you check the diode specs and that they exceed the
Solarworld diode specs ( I could not find it for that module) . Should be UL
listed for the module Max Voltage rating , beware Chinese knockoffs, buy from a
reliable source! Rough rule of Thumb, Diode needs to be rated at the max
breaker size current + 25 - 50% to account for temperature and current derate.
ST has a great application note AN3432 if you want to geek out on the
details Look for a solderless clamping terminals or at least one that is
spaced off the back of the module to make sure that you do not damage the back
sheet when soldering, this connection is critical and a source of future
failures in modules from over-heated poor solders. A Larger Junction box is
better for heat dissipation with the diode
away from the back of the module and to cover

Sorry Bruce, just we've been in this situation many times over the past
few years; It's been a real pain. I actually think the best thing might
be to pull some 175s out of service on a system upgrade for one customer
in order to use them for other customers' systems. We found a few
modules that were close dimensionally and performance wise, but they
were not exact. (Conergy 180 worked, but was off by a couple of inches
on the length as I recall)

that the new framing would be present on the new mono and poly modules.
They are called the plus series.

The new frames present some problems. There is no place for an Acme clip
and no provision for back mount clips. We have been using the Acme clips as
really the only listed, non-plastic, commercially available cable routing
device on the market. Now that these don't work, we spent the day figuring
out an alternative technique for routing PV cables. I think we came up with
a pretty good solution that works with the DPW P6 rail and Enphase
components that appear to be our new norm.

The glass on these modules looks cheap. It is reflective and not flat.
The frames look and feel flimsy. It used to be the American made meant
quality but I'm not so sure any more.

I spoke with my vendor and he said that complaints have been rolling in
about the lack of a flange and the frame will be modified to include a

Re: [RE-wrenches] SolarWorld Poly

2011-06-23 Thread Nik Ponzio
Bill,

I was afraid of that!

One thing I didn't mention earlier is that the old-style frame widths of the
Mono have some significant variation from end to end. This makes it
difficult to maintain a nice even gap between rows. The newer Poly frames
(top-down only) seem to have a much tighter tolerance on the square
dimensions. I still like the Mono style better, but it sounds like we will
have to adapt...

We did also have two freight-damaged shipments. This is mostly an issue
caused by a careless forklift operator but the factory distributors are
also cutting corners with the packaging.

If you see receive a pallet that looks like this,
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_23bAMmghhHRqFjEzsOtkyibeFbxo7C9BtDVyGYSu5g?feat=directlink
I suggest you refuse delivery and let the shipper deal with the freight
claim. What a pain that is!

Otherwise, no failures yet. All systems are go!

in my opinion. I believe they are working on their own clip system, last I
saw it looked a bit German and a liitle too fancy for my tastes. I have
not compared glass surfaces between the two models, but I would suspect that
they are switchign to the cheaper reflective glass on all their new
models. Cutting cost in one place and adding in another! Over all thouh a

far as to call my distributor to make sure I hadn't gotten a bad batch that
missed the anti-reflective coating step. That's what it seems like!

The other significant difference is the frame style used. The Poly are
only compatible with top-down clamping. I was aware of this from the
datasheets but I had no idea that the glass would be so different.

Nick, that is a huge amount of difference. Like you, I would suspect the
lack of antireflective coating. Please let us in on any Solar World
response.

Esteemed Wrenches,

I have been using a lot of SolarWorld mono-crystalline modules this year and
I am quite happy with the product. This week we installed our first
SolarWorld poly-crystalline array. I was surprised at how different the two
modules are. The glass on the poly module is highly reflective. I went so
far as to call my distributor to make sure I hadn't gotten a bad batch that
missed the anti-reflective coating step. That's what it seems like!

The other significant difference is the frame style used. The Poly are only
compatible with top-down clamping. I was aware of this from the datasheets
but I had no idea that the glass would be so different.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SolarWorld Poly

2011-06-23 Thread William Miller

Friends:

I got my hands on the first of the new poly modules today. I understood
that the new framing would be present on the new mono and poly
modules. They are called the plus series.

The new frames present some problems. There is no place for an Acme clip
and no provision for back mount clips. We have been using the Acme clips
as really the only listed, non-plastic, commercially available cable
routing device on the market. Now that these don't work, we spent the day
figuring out an alternative technique for routing PV cables. I think we
came up with a pretty good solution that works with the DPW P6 rail and
Enphase components that appear to be our new norm.

The glass on these modules looks cheap. It is reflective and not
flat. The frames look and feel flimsy. It used to be the American made
meant quality but I'm not so sure any more.

I spoke with my vendor and he said that complaints have been rolling in
about the lack of a flange and the frame will be modified to include a
flange. No idea how soon.

Sincerely,

William Miller

I just bought a new mono solarworld 250 and it also has a new stle frame
with no feet, I believe they have switched to the new frame for all their
models now. Limits options for mounting to only using top clips, not good
in my opinion.
Over all thouh a
good solid module.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SolarWorld 245

2010-10-14 Thread Dave Click
I believe this is saying that after the initial LID (Light Induced
Degradation), it will be rated at no less than 97% of STC. AFAIK, LID is
easily a percent or two on most modules. These modules will have been
tested to produce at least their rated output when they leave the
factory, before they see sunlight.

Marco,

There was a time in the near past when +/- 10% meant that every module
shipped was at least -5%. Things have improved.
The copy of the SW 245 spec sheet that I just downloaded has a red note
explaining that every module is above nominal in their flash test. The
+/- 3 tolerance may be largely uncertainty in the accuracy of the flash
test equipment, procedures, and in how the flash test correlates to the
real world. In other words it is a CYA operation.

I can send the spec sheet to anyone who wants it. It states on the
front page: SolarWorld only delivers modules that have */greater than
or equal to the nameplate rated power/*. (emphasis added)

This implies clearly to me a minus zero percent power tolerance.

And then you look at the finer print on page 2 and see under *Power
Tolerance : +/- 3%**

*Only modules with flash-tested or = Pmax are delivered. Linear
warranty guarantees Year 1 module output to or + 97% or Pmax.

I’m confused. Does this mod actually have a -0 PT or not?

And on another note, are many of you finding it difficult to get an
adequate supply of PV mods to meet your demands these days?
SolarWorld, Schott, Sharp and Kyocera seem to be in short supply these
days out in these here parts.

Thanks,

marco

My long field experience with Solarworld modules measured in conjunction with
an irradiance meter, shows that they do consistently out perform their STC
ratings.
Of course that's not a take it to the bank lab test. I've also seen Sunpower
outperform its STC ratings.
