Re: [RE-wrenches] Megger Testers

2009-04-13 Thread Bill Brooks
Kingsley,

The concern I have about this unit, and many other inexpensive ones like it, is
that it does not have enough resolution in the low impedance area. PV arrays
can have an impedance to ground of as low as 2kOhms. A resolution of 0.1MOhms
will likely not cut it. I just bought a $175 meter for fun and I will take it
out into the field to try it next to the Fluke 1520. If we can get decent
information, great. But the better resolution may require spending closer to
the $700 or more.

The key is that you don’t want to be chasing a ground fault that really does
not exist. The resistance to ground can be so low that a simple meter will call
it ground-faulted. I’ll let you know what I find out. I’m betting that megger
testing PV arrays is about to get required much more regularly.

Bill.

Hi I have one, it waas less than three hundred I have used ot look for wiring
porblems particularly if the problem only occurs when the system is wet.
Caution mine will generate about 3000 volts, which I believe can damage several
pieces of equipment.

 Hi All,

I'm in the market for a Megger tester, although
 I've never used one
before, and am not sure of what options or price range I
 should be
considering. I will primarily being using it for testing
 PV wiring (DC
and potentially AC single phase), although I'm not sure
 if there are other
opportunities I would be interested in using it for.
 I've seen prices
ranging from less than $100 to several thousand. Does
 anyone have
specific models they would suggest or features that I
 should be
 specifically interested?

As always, thanks in advance for any info,

2009-04-11 Thread Kingsley
Hi Howie,

I use this one:
http://www.tequipment.net/BK307A.html

from BK Precision. Normally I like digital readouts and normally buy from
Fluke but in this case a $200 meter gets the job done.

Cheers,
