Re: [RE-wrenches] My .02 - 12/24v garage door opener.....

2018-02-01 Thread Darryl Thayer
I took a look at one my customer's garage usage, I was not there, but
Egauge said total load when opening or closing the garage door, was 650
watts for about 30 seconds. meaning 5.6 Wh for a single operation. twice a
day 22.4 Wh daily use two open and close cycles. but I see a background
load besides the light, (LED about 7 watts for 3 minutes= 0.35 Wh). There
is a background load of about 100 watts, Possible the radio receiver? or?
This is the gorilla in the room. 100W for 24 hrs is 2400 Wh. So if this
is correct the pushbutton is a real problem. perhaps a button on the door
to open instead of radio?

Also using the 7 day to 50% rule at 25 Wh/day the battery will need to be
30 AH @12 volt and the solar module would be 90 watts using 2 SSH/day

So why not use one of the garage doors that has a built in backup battery and
just charge the built in battery directly?
Its got all the internals already done?

Install a CC and PV module and you are all done?

Re: [RE-wrenches] My .02 - 12/24v garage door opener.....

2018-01-31 Thread John
Hi all, perhaps a bit of clarification might help.1) the location of the
garage is in a block of flats/units where all the garages are at the end of the
row and it is not possible to get a.c. into the end unit of 4 garages without
having to obtain permission of all the other 3 garage owners, which has its own
complications and is highly unlikely.
2) it is not being approached as a *cost saving* measure as someone suggested.
It is merely a practical application where a.c. is not available.
3) another person mentioned that it is high energy use for a short time,
therefore the total energy per day is low.
4) am I to understand that there is no readily available *off-the-shelf*
solution for a 12/24v garage door opener??

Thanks for the input - John V

Not even going to mention building code and running DC wiring outside of the
area (battery/inverter/chargers location) an inspector would allow.
Even some of the very rural/extreme remote counties I work in know that they
are ill-equipped to inspect DC wiring. Some will tell you there is no
inspection for offgrid homes but if there is a fire they will say they told the
installer no DC wiring except in the area of the battery.
