More freeze break requests for GNOME Shell
Hey everyone, here's another set of patches that I'd like to see in 3.10: (1) https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708187 gnome-keyring dialogs are supposed to be disabled while the screen is locked. However gnome-keyring was changed to fall back to GNOME2-style dialogs when the shell implementation is unavailable to avoid a race on startup, and as a result this is now also used on the lock screen. The attached patches are fairly straightforward and don't affect the case that's already working as expected (keyring prompts in the normal unlocked session), so should be safe. (2) https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708186 After an authentication failure on the login screen, the password entry is reset twice, so users that have already started to re-enter their password while the failure message is still displayed, will have their partly entered password cleared and need to start again - annoying. The attached patch is a trivial one-line change which fixes this. (3) https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708380 The shortcut to disable the message tray (superm) is disabled on the login screen, but the message tray still appears in the a11y switcher (ctrlalttab) due to some logic flaw in the code which is supposed to disable it. The attached fix is fairly simple and safe. It's admittedly not a big problem, and I wouldn't have asked for a freeze break just for that bug, but as I'm already asking for the other bugs, I'm including it anyway ... gnome-settings-daemon: Freeze break request for the mouse plugin
Hi, Bastien asked me to request a freeze break for https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708546 It's a simple patch that fixes a critical warning in touchpad settings code, and also makes the setting actually work -- currently it always fails to read back the value of the settings key. Re: Opening the 3.12 cycle
About GNOME Software, could we create a GNOME Goal to complete the missing Appdata? 2013/9/23 Matthias Clasen matthias.cla...@gmail.com Hi, with 3.10 getting wrapped up today, it is time to look ahead at the next cycle and start making plans for what we want to achieve. We've set up the usual page on the wiki to collect the plans: https://wiki.gnome.org/ThreePointEleven/Features And there is already some material there that has been carried over from previous releases: - Integrate Facebook photos in GNOME Photos - Git integration in the developer experience - GNOME Software - Systemd for the user session - Colour Tinting in GNOME Shell - Videos application implementation - Complete the GNOME Wayland port - Integrate Zimbra in GNOME It would be good if the owners of these features could re-evaluate them and decide if they should really be on the list of things we want to achieve for 3.12. If not, then just remove the page. But maybe there are other things that people are working on, or want to work on for 3.12 ? Now is the time to make your ideas known, and turn them into concrete plans. Yes, the idea would be that all applications have their own Appdata, marked as translatable and verified with the script developed by hughsie. Re: When we look for Gnome Improvements.
Yup... I have to agree that there are simple usability and experience issues to tackle before trying to socialize... another area to address is the the relation between 'messages' and 'status' that came up on IRC... On Sep 23, 2013 5:04 PM, Leslie S Satenstein lsatenst...@yahoo.com wrote: There are more important things than Facebook or Twitter. If I was looking for Gnome improvements, I would look at being the ability to create and tag manage tags for object. So, if I was doing an application, called bigapp, I might like to create a tag which would identify terminal mode, codebreaker, a linux help file, etc as being tagged and show in a popup request. (Look at what I can do with Android to make my own widgets) If I was to create a tag called music1, I would like to tag the music player and the directory in which my music1 tagged selections were stored. And I would like to be able to selectively clear the Frequent side of the Activities display. And if I was a lefty, I would like to be able to place the favourites bar on the right side of the screen. And I would like the option of having the user id appear when that user is the one presented on the screen. Not everyone wants to have a name hidden, unless you force different background images per user. For each application I work on, that needs some separation, I create a unique logon on my desktop. (encryption, ERP, Social, Guests, Leslie as an example. It is a real PITA when the logon name is not always present. And I would like to have a much more attractive login screen. I was searching for one where similar to what Mint14 offered, but with the option of an analog clock on the right inside of that logon list. Yes, there are many small usability projects to review and reconsider. For example, a GUI tar command would be nice, and some other functionality that would not require me to use command line mode. Three of the most useful tweaks should be made permenant. One of them is places. The second is the extended hybernate, sleep, switchuser, etc. menu and... One where one can set F12 (or Fxx) so that the terminal mode is opened for the top 35% of the screen. This latter tweak is a little jewel of a tweak. I can start a background task, hit f12, and the screen rolls up. Later I can toggle F12, see the progress made, and toggle F12 again. Congratulations to that author. That commit went in at the eleventh hour and Dan Winship has expressed some concerns it may be riskier than doing a workaround in gnome-online-accounts. We're going to need at least part of this patch in GLib eventually anyway, but I have misgivings about other parts of it. The only reason I'm happy to accept the changes now is because I've discovered a path towards deprecating g_cancellable_disconnect() entirely. I have a patch for that already done, but it involves gsignal work and it's way too risky to do this cycle. All around, though, if we could wait until next cycle for all of these changes (to GLib), I would be much happier. Approving Ray's request would let me do that. I would have liked to hear Matthias take on this but as Ray is confident about it, and Ryan is ok with it, here's my approval.
