I understand that the numbers of lines changed may be a cause of
concern, but I am pretty confident that this has low chance of
introducing regressions, since most of the new code only runs when the
new feature is activated.

Of course there's still a chance something could have slipped in
unnoticed, but since we're not in hard code freeze yet, we should still
have some time to fix issues if they come up in testing before 3.34.0.

It wouldn't be the end of the world, and I trust the release team's
judgement, but I'm not sure that deferring it would necessarily
translate to higher quality, since the current set of MRs have been
tested with 3.34.

Also since Sushi got a major rewrite this cycle, this feature is a nice
user-visible improvement to showcase together with it.

Feature freeze break request for Sushi

2019-08-27 Thread Cosimo Cecchi via release-team
Hi release team,

I'd like to ask for a feature freeze break in order to merge an
implementation for a long-standing Sushi feature request: updating the
currently previewed file when arrow keys are pressed in the Sushi
window [1].

The feature requires to extend the private DBus interface between
Nautilus and Sushi, and since we just added a v2 interface this cycle
in order to support Wayland, right now would be a great time to do so.

The two merge requests ([2] and [3]) have been reviewed by Carlos here
at GUADEC and should be ready to go in case the feature freeze break is
granted.

In the meantime, please let me know if there's any further information
I can provide.

Thanks for getting back to us!
We discussed this in a past meeting of the Board, and decided that it would
be best to create an email alias that covers both the Board and any
contributors that are interested in managing the account. That way, the
Board would still be able to independently recover or change the password
or other account settings if needed, while giving the flexibility to the
contributors to do so as well.

Can you coordinate with Andrea (copied here) to get this process started?
We could use e.g. google-p...@gnome.org as the alias.
Let me know if you have any other questions!

It has been brought to my attention that my message might have come across
as an approval of our usage of the logo.
To clear any possible misunderstanding, I want to reiterate that I was
expressing my personal opinion (and not the board's), and that I was
exclusively referring to the update of our existing icons to the new logo.

Ekaterina's point about making sure our usage is complying with Google's
trademark requirements still stands independently of which version of the
logo we use, and I agree it would be a good idea to seek an explicit
permission.

To clarify, my request is mostly related to being the gate-keeper for the
account and what goes in it.
I can't think of a team that would be better suited for that, as we would
effectively be releasing some software as GNOME.

I'm also curious to understand your concern further.

Also, while all is well when maintainers are active (and I am sure

I would not expect this to be the case here; if the maintainer loses
interest in the app and no one else picks it up, I think it would be fine
for us to drop it.

Signing apps on Google Play store

2015-09-01 Thread Cosimo Cecchi
Hi Release Team,

The Board has recently been asked a question from Ankit and Zeeshan (in the
CC) about publishing an Android application [1] on the Google Play store
under a GNOME account.
The Board doesn't get involved in technical matters, but the consensus was
that it would be a good idea to promote applications like these as
"official" under a GNOME account, so I'm reaching out to you with my Board
hat on.

It's my understanding that the process of publishing an application on
Google Play involves creating a master key for the organization. Would the
release-team be interested in helping out with this and holding the secret
keys/creating a process for publishing applications of this kind?
Ankit already said that he volunteers to maintain and release the
application, so that part of the process would not be different from what
we currently have for regular modules.

Any feedback appreciated!

Thanks Ankit, that's helpful; in that case I guess we would want to keep
the access to the dashboard (and consequently to which applications get
published as "GNOME" applications) centralized.

displayed in the Open With context menus when they shouldn't.
The fix is low risk and doesn't impact any translation or documentation.
OK to commit for 3.8.0?

Re: State of nautilus-sendto for 3.8

2013-03-19 Thread Cosimo Cecchi
Hey, just a little update on this.

Since I didn't get approval from i18n, I went ahead and released nautilus
3.7.92 without the string changes for now.
As there are no other code changes involved, I think it's fine to commit
that before 3.8.0, should the change be approved and the n-s-t part
merged/released as well in time.

Cheers,
Cosimo

No 3.7 tarball of nautilus-sendto has been released yet, and I'm
 planning
to release nautilus 3.7.92 later today, so there would still
 potentially be
time for the change to be included in this release.

Even if I didn't spell it explicitly in my previous message, the change
implies an UI freeze break request for nautilus-sendto, and a string
 freeze
   break request for nautilus.

I'd prefer to remove nautilus-sendto from 3.8; it's in my opinion way
too late in the schedule to get those changes in and appropriately
  tested.

Those changes are based on the existing nautilus-sendto code, they're
nicely separated, and they've been better tested than nautilus-sendto
had the chance to be in the past couple of releases.

Still, I'd let this slip in, be tested in .92, translated, and removed
  from 3.8.0 if necessary.

Cool. FWIW, the only string changes are the 2 strings in nautilus,
there's nothing more to translate in nautilus-sendto itself.

Freeze break request for gnome-shell

2013-03-01 Thread Cosimo Cecchi
Hi all,

This cycle we redesigned the Shell overview, hiding the message tray by
default from the view.
The original design also added a new messages indicator to make the tray

Patches have been reviewed already and the request comes from the design

Nautilus UI/String freeze break request

2012-09-14 Thread Cosimo Cecchi
Hi all,

I apologize for the many freeze break requests for Nautilus this
cycle, but I have one last request to commit an UI/string change.
Currently we have two mimetype columns for List view: one (enabled by
default) displaying its description as a (typically long) string, and
another one displaying the raw mimetype string.
Bug 683722 [1] proposes to change the default column to use a more
generic and compact string describing the mimetype; for instance, all
the images would be displayed as Image. The goals are to make it
possible to group objects of the same family when sorting, and to
reduce the horizontal space such a column takes in the default list
view layout. The raw mimetype string would still be available
unchanged as a view option for more advanced filtering.

The patch is available on the bug and introduces a bunch of new
(short) strings. I think this would add a good extra polish for
Nautilus 3.6.

Email nautilus-sendto used to offer a set of options other than
email, which are currently not really working correctly. In the bug
there's a patch to change the extension to open the email client

- https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=683752 - when an user
tries to open a file for which there are no applications available, we
show a message saying There is no application installed for %s

stands out from the rest of the string.

We do have a stock help item in GTK+, maybe you can use the string
from there and save translators some work ?

I'd rather keep this as simple as possible, but I am willing to do
something like this if the translators think it's too much work to
translate this again in Documents.
Long term, we should probably have some stock actions defined for
menus using GMenuModel too, which would avoid this duplication of
translated strings.

Surely gutting nautilus-sendto should get a bit more exposure

anybody looked at what other modules use nautilus-sendto to
 share stuff?

[CC-ing Bastien]

I'm sorry, I should have probably explained this a little better.
Nobody is trying to gut nautilus-sendto, the goal is to have something
working nicely for the use case of sending a file to somebody. As far
as I can see, the Email option is really the only interesting one
working correctly for nautilus-sendto at the moment, and that's where
the patch came from.

Note that nautilus-sendto has two parts: the module itself and a
Nautilus extension that adds the item to the context menus. Only the
extension lives in the nautilus source tree right now; I cannot really
answer the question about whether it's used by other modules, probably
Bastien would know. Of course, the nautilus change doesn't make any
sense without the corresponding change that removes the dialog in
nautilus-sendto, so probably Bastien should send an UI freeze request
for that first?

I should also note that this is not a high priority bug for me, and
it's also completely fine if we decide it's better to punt such a
change to the next cycle.

Nautilus UI freeze break request

2012-08-28 Thread Cosimo Cecchi
Hi,

We have a patchset in Nautilus that redesigns the Connect to Server dialog.
Notable changes are:
- the dialog now remembers and keeps track of the servers you
connected to in the past (allowing you to remove or clear the list on
context menu)
- instead of having the dialog construct the URI manually from the
various comboboxes/controls, we now use an entry box to type the URI
directly. This is more consistent with what other OS use for the same
feature
- we have now a Browse button in the dialog directly

There's a more detailed analysis and screenshots in the bug report [1].

Since in the future we don't want to promote the use of this dialog
from out of nautilus, the separate binary for it has been moved to
$(libexec), with the idea to remove it completely next cycle. There's
an analysis on the impact of this in the bug report, but the short
version is that Baobab will probably need a patch to reflect this
change (gnome-panel and gnome-shell are also affected, but the former
will gracefully handle the binary missing, and we want to remove the
Connect to Server launcher from the shell entirely [2]).

I think this would be a nice polishing to have for 3.6, and with this
mail I request an UI freeze break for the feature.

Thanks!
Cosimo

Re: Nautilus UI freeze break request

Hi Shaun,

 1) Describe how to write the URIs in general.
 2) List the available URI schemes and what they're for.
 3) Describe how to put details like username, port, folder,
 etc. into the URL.

Writing made-up URLs by hand seems like a trip back to 2001
to me. It does mean there's more to document. Who wants to
 do it?

To be honest, I don't think such a detailed level of information about
what URIs are is required; I think what matters most is how you did
get the URL you want to connect to in the first place:
- if you configured a service like Samba yourself, you probably know
already what is an URL, a port etc, and you have no problem typing it
all (it's actually faster and less error-prone than finding the right
service type and filling in all the fields)
- if you got it from somewhere else (for example the documentation of
your NAS, like in [1]), in the old dialog you would have to guess how
to decompose the URL into the various controls in the dialog

Note that even in these cases, you would have still needed to type the
URI manually in the old dialog (and also a number of other details
upfront). Finally, if you want to discover services in your network,
we want to promote the use of the browsing features (that's the reason
for the button in the new dialog layout).

 - we have now a Browse button in the dialog directly

What does the Browse button do? Just close the dialog and
take you to the Browse Network location in Nautilus?

Yes, exactly.

Thanks,
Cosimo

Documents freeze break

2012-03-23 Thread Cosimo Cecchi
Hi,

I would like to get two last-minute fixes in the 3.4 release of
Documents.

Fix a crasher when clicking the 'Back' button from preview:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672723

Fix loading spinner getting stuck in the way when clicking 'Back' and
the document preview is still loading:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672724

Patches are attached to the bug and should both be trivial and very
safe.

Thanks for considering,
Cosimo

Two gnome-system-log fixes

2012-03-21 Thread Cosimo Cecchi
Hi,

I would like to merge these two gnome-system-log patches from Matthias
for 3.4:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672513
- I think this is a regression from the GConf-GSettings migration. When
there's no log files list saved in preferences, GConf used to return
NULL, whereas GSettings returns an empty zero-terminated array

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=672514
- fixes an obvious memory allocation bug that might cause a crash at
startup

Thanks for considering,
Cosimo

OK for docs. Those help pages need quite a bit of work before they're

Cosimo, the screenshots are really helpful. Can you leave them up
through at least the 3.4.0 release?

Thanks Shaun,
I won't delete the screenshots anytime soon.

Hey Andre,

thanks for the heads-up on these plural strings, will fix.
Since we're not in string-freeze yet, but only string change
announcement, I don't think I need another approval from I18N though,
right?

Documents Freeze break request

2012-03-02 Thread Cosimo Cecchi
Hi,

in the last week I worked on a series of improvements for GNOME
Documents; most these changes were initially planned to be done during
the 3.4 cycle but unfortunately I missed the freeze deadline.
Changes include
- the use of checkbuttons instead of the classic treeview-like selection
background for selection mode
- changing the title of the toolbar according to the current view
- support for drag and drop of items out of the application
- show document date information in list view
- support for printing documents
I put some screenshots of the new features here [1].

The changes unfortunately include quite some new strings and touch some
important bits of the UI, but I think they're worth it and I would like
to merge them for next Monday's beta, so I am here requesting a freeze
break for these changes.

Code can be found at [2].

gnome-documents: UI freeze break request

2011-09-12 Thread Cosimo Cecchi
Hi,

I would like to push a patch to gnome-documents which changes the style
used for emblems to better match the one in the mockups.
I believe this is technically an UI freeze, though the only thing that
would change from an user is the style of the displayed icons.

Patch is attached to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=658826

Thanks,
Cosimo
