gnome-shell has some old code in it that basically makes it break if
it's running with GDM less than 3.5.92. Unfortunately, the version

pretty bad blocker bug which takes multiple commits to fix

2013-03-25 Thread Ray Strode
Hey guys,

We have a fairly serious blocker bug right now in the new backgroudn
rendering code where we inadventently leak backgrounds. This means
over time (especially with slide show animations) the shell memory
usage can balloon to gigabytes of memory usage and then die from the
OOM killer.

The bug is here:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696157

Note it takes multiple fixes to various layers to keep it from behaving badly:

1) a patch to fix GTask usage to unref the task associated with
loading the image from disk. Without this the task is never freed.
2) another GTask-y fix, that makes sure we unref the pixbuf when we're
done with it, since GTask transfers ownership
3) a fix to the cache code to evict old slides when a slide show
changes to the next slide.
4) another cache fix. This one isn't really a leak fix, but makes the
caching more effective. We could really go either way on this one I
guess.
5) another cache fix. If the same image is loaded multiple times at
once, we should only load it once, instead of multiple times in
parallel. This makes the cache more effective, in practice, and
prevents having multiple copies of background data hanging around
unnecessarily.
6) code to reuse shader snippets. We need this for cogl to free
pipelines we allocate when we tell it to because of internal caching
it does.
7) code to drop blur and desaturate from the api. We don't use them
anymore, and keeping them in the api would complicate the patch for 6)
somewhat.
8) a fix in the clean up handler that can make gnome-shell crash or
hang when freshly created backgrounds get garbage collected.
9) a fix that prevents an exception from being thrown in multiple
backgrounds are changed in quick succession
10) a fix that prevents a background from being freed in some cases
for the workspace thumbnail
11) an unrelated fix that stops an exception from being thrown in some
slide shows. probably should be on another bug and go in 3.8.1

Colin pointed out this is a lot to go in at once, and I don't disagree
with him. On the other hand background data tends to be big, and so
leaking that kind of data is really bad. I think we should seriously
consider most of the patches with the exception of 10, and maybe 4 and
5.

live image

2012-05-17 Thread Ray Strode
Hey,

I put together a live image with a jhbuild built in it here:

http://ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/gnome/misc/testing/GNOME-3.5.1-LiveUSB.iso

You can write the image to a usb stick with this command:

sudo dd if=GNOME-3.5.1-LiveUSB.iso of=/dev/DRIVE bs=8M conv=fsync

(where DRIVE is a usb stick, probably /dev/sdb, but could be something
different, so be careful!)

It's a little hacked together, at the moment. I'd like to get the
process I used more refined and potentially automated so we can do
testing more easily and regularly through the development cycle.

One thing, that makes this image less than useful in virtual machines
is a bug in software rendering. Adam Jackson,
has a cogl workaround here:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=674208

But that patch isn't applied, so this image doesn't work great in
virtual machines. Hopefully that will be resolved soon.

gdm freeze break request

2011-09-26 Thread Ray Strode
Hi,

In the last release I made the shell greeter work with the legacy pam
handling code to enable distributions that are stuck using that method
of authentication the opportunity to get the 3.2 shell based login
screen:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=658451

That compat code had a bug in it, though, that prevented it from working.

Any chance I can commit the fix before the 3.2.0 release of gdm? If
not, distros can patch in the fix, I guess, but that's suboptimal, of
course.

Hi,

2011/9/7 William Jon McCann william.jon.mcc...@gmail.com:
Logo.  The old fallback login screen has a way to specify an optional
logo at the login screen.  This was added for site administrators to
brand their lab machines, and distros also use it to add branding.  We
don't want to show any sort of logo by default, so this one would only
get shown after changing a gsettings key.

 +1 if the designers agree

 What does it look like?
As Florian pointed out, i stuffed it in the power screenshot so I
wouldn't have to do 3 different ones:

But don't pay too much attention to the logo. It's a mythical logo I
spent 5 minutes in the gimp making.

Here's one with a fedora logo:

and of course here's what it looks like by default with no
vendor/admin overrides:

shell freeze break request

2011-09-06 Thread Ray Strode
Hey guys,

There are a few bugs that I think would be really worthwhile to get in
for a better 3.2 login story:

Fingerprint reader support for login. We had this feature in 3.0, but
I didn't get it added in the initial cut of the shell based greeter.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657823

Shutdown menu. The initial design for the login screen lacked a way
to power off the machine (without first logging in). Given we've
historically told people one way to power off the machine is to first
log out, this is kind of contradictory.

Logo. The old fallback login screen has a way to specify an optional

Thoughts?

Seeing screenshots would make it much easier to judge the ui impact of
these. I'm in favour of accepting all three of these, anyway, since
they address what would otherwise be seen as regressions in going from
the classical gdm greeter to the shell greeter.
here are two screenshots:

1) showing the power menu and mythical Swift Labs header. You could
also imagine a Fedora logo or whatever there instead (or the default
of nothing at all)

2) Showing the very limited UI for fingerprint (or swipe finger). If
you swipe your finger it logs you in. If you misswipe it doesn't.
