Unfortunately without a spectrum analyzer, you'll never know it's in
comb mode. I've done this on three systems, two VHF and one 220,
and they all act about the same. Tune the TX for max output, and
you'll end up on or very near comb mode.

Really? Guess I'm spoiled with the Midland 13-509 G.E. radios: both are
fairly difficult to make spurious even if you try.

A long time ago I spent some time working with an old Standard VHF repeater
that was given to me. It seemed to behave as you described your systems:
spurious unless tuned just right with a spectrum analyzer. I wrote it
 off as defective returned it.

You cannot replace the Quantar's internal controller which is
necessary for the station to operate, however, you can interface the
Quantar to external devices such as a CAT controller. That way you
can get features that the Quantar does not have such as voice ID's,
courtesy tones, announcements and so on.

There is a tab in the Quantar service manual called System
Applications that shows how to make the connections for PTT, COR, Rx
and Tx audio.

To do this, the Quantar must have a wireline interface board installed.

This also presumes that you are talking about analog only operation.
If you want to do P25 digital or mixed-mode operation, you will
require a DIU3000 to host the interface to an axternal controller.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: INTERFACE FOR CAT CONTROLLER

2006-04-11 Thread Bryon Jeffers K0BSJ
You can also use the MRTI connector and program the Quantar to give MRTI
priority and be a base not a repeater. All signals are present on the DB25
on the rear of the chassis. The other way is by using the 50 pin telco
connector on the rear and having the Wildcard option installed which is
on or part of the Wireline Interfaceboard

Also as NJ902 says, if your are wanting to pass or do P25 you use the
DIU3000 between the Quantar and the external controller...

Hope this helps...

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Weird Kerchuking Problem

2006-04-11 Thread Scott
Well, I thought I would bring this saga to a close...it is a paging TX
falsing the 141.3 CTCSS tone just enough to kerchuck the repeater.
Try any other tone and it is quiet as a mouse! Tried moving it across
the room, still to no avail. FYI, the CAT is set up for COR Tone.

Since this thing is being tested at a different tower than where it
will be, I am going to opt to leave it off for now and when it gets in
it's permanent home, hope the tone will work right there. All our
other machines, including the privately owned ones, have the same
141.3 tone. It's permanent home is about 15 miles away, and there are
no paging TX's there...

Thanks for all the suggestions! I sure hate I got into working on
repeaters because of the death of one of our club members, but I am
enjoying it! (Got 4 of these puppies to keep up, plus 2 APRS digis!)

  Here's the problem...

Every so often (several times in 10 minutes) we are getting a key up
  of our repeater.

  Here is what we know...
There is no signal coming in on the input frequency. No even a small
spike. It is almost like something in the set up is timing and
keying,
but it is not an exact interval. Doesn't matter is RX tone is enabled
  in the CAT or not.

  Here is the setup...
Motorola Mitrek trunk mount on 443.275, CAT 250 controller, Com-Spec
TS64DS tone board. It has a good 300W 3 can duplexer that is tuned
correctly and working well. 75Amp power supply. The cabinet also has
an APRS rig in it, as well as a remote receiver for another repeater,
and a link radio, but NONE of that is even turned on (and doesn't
make
  a difference when it is).

Suggestions as to what to look for...?

Make sure you are using COS *AND* PL. The decoder may be falsing on
 random noise.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Trade a Bird 43 (with slugs) for a telewave meter?

Well I like My Bird Too, but as I got older and older I now like the Big
Display on My Coaxial Dynamics 83000-A, which uses my Bird Slugs.
