What would you advise ? I would put in a whole unit if it's easier
but I don't know how to hook it up to the modern cell networks. The
bag idea is just what we were thinking was the easiest, any advice
 would be great,Greg.

Why bother? It sounds like a lot of work, and the old analog bag phone
probably won't work any more. You'll be hard pressed to find any analog
cell phone sites still in operation. I know there's none here in Ohio.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] MSR 2000 PA okay cranked down?

2008-10-29 Thread wd8chl
I have 75W Mitrek running at about 45 W out (with a fan of course), and
it's quite fine. I do however have a circulator/isolator w/load on the
output, before the duplexer. The MSR is the same PA, so I would do the
same thing. I don't think Motorola put a circulator on those like they
did with the Micor stations.
I would say OK, but put a circulator on it.

 George,

The MSR2000 manual specs the TLE2283B as variable between 45 and 100
 watts.
You're taking a chance to run it below 45 watts, especially if it is
 feeding
a reactive load. The specs assume a stable 50 ohm load.

Will a UHF MSR 2000 TLE2283B intermittent-duty PA play nice cranked back
 to
30 - 40 watts, or will it go spurious on me?

 Inquiring minds want to know.

Was this from shearing or vibration? If they're merely vibrating off, I'd
have to say this is an application for Loctite, blue grade.

The nice part with the blue stuff is you can inspect the torque and/or
dismantle the tower later without having to use a torch. Higher grades of
Loctite are stronger but much harder to disassemble later.

Yesterday morning the one of the communications towers on Broken Rock
Mt. in western Arkansas collapsed. This self supporting tower was over
200 feet tall and had cell service and the NOAA weather radio for our
area. The tower collapsed with a wind of no more than 50 miles per hour
and had survived hurricanes Gustov and Ike.

Last year I found some large bolts, nuts, washers on the ground at a
similar tower where our repeater in Hot Springs is located. We had a
tower company inspect our tower and they found loose bolts and one leg
connection with all but one bolt missing with no nut.

I am mo expert but it appears to me by looking at the leg connection of
the collapsed tower the same condition occurred. Both towers were less
than 12 years old. Pictures can be seen at http://hsara.org/. Scroll
 below the map.

The moral of this story is check those bolts and check them often.

[Repeater-Builder] COR from a Kenwood TM 331

2008-10-29 Thread coachstevesmith
I've read you can get everything you need to use one of these as a
remote base from the mic plug _except_ COR... that you need the Doug
Hall interface to get COR from the mic. Does anyone have experience
getting it from inside the radio itself? This is my first try at
remote base linking... would appreciate any and all pointers.

Two Questions:

1.) Is there a controller under $500 that easily interfaces with the
Doug Hall box?

2.) Does anyone have a Doug Hall remote base controller they'd like
to get rid of? :-)

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Broken Rock MT. tower collapse

2008-10-29 Thread Scott Zimmerman
The tower I dismantled earlier this summer had locks built into the nuts.
Engaging the locks was automatic for the tightening procedure. You simply
tightened the nuts with an impact wrench. The lock was nothing more than a
piece of heavy steel wire (#12??) imbedded in the surface of the nut. The
thread end of the wire looked like it had been cut with a pair of side
cutters. (it was chisel shaped to gouge better) When they tightened the nuts
during assembly, the wire gouged into the threads of the bolt. When we were
taking the tower apart, we had to go along with a hammer and chisel and
unlock the locks so we could loosen the nuts. It was almost impossible to
get the nuts loose without disabling the locks.

The RLC-1 does
http://www.link-comm.com/dpage.php?cid=2scid=11. It costs about $250.

If you want something fancier, the RLC-1 Plus (about $525) adds a
voice synthesizer and real time clock. The RLC-4 (about $550) will
handle four radio ports (repeaters, full or half-duplex links,
etc). See http://www.link-comm.com/dpage.php?cid=2scid=12 and
http://www.link-comm.com/dpage.php?cid=2scid=14 respectively.
