[Repeater-Builder] 30A power supply suggestion

2009-01-07 Thread Andreas Papagapiou
Hi all and Happy New Year!

I'm looking for a power supply for our local repeater.
We are currently using a cheap 20A power supply, but I'm worried it
may fail under
heavy usage and feed our equipment with higher voltage (it happened
in the past with a similar
power supply which supplied 35V instead of 13.8)

What I want is a reliable 13,8V, 30A power supply that can provide at
least 15A at 100% duty cycle.
It also needs to be light (i.e. switching, not transformer type), so
that I won't have to pay a fortune to have it shipped here.
Any suggestions on models or online shops I can order from?

cheers,

Andreas - 5B8AP

Duracomm LP-25. Unless lightening hits it, it will work. Very reliable. We have
many in service. No. Failures to date except direct lightening strike.

[Repeater-Builder] CAT300DX Programming

2009-01-07 Thread Alexander N Tubonjic
I'm in the process of programming up a new controller on my repeater
(CAT300DX) and I think I've got everything setup the way I want it
except for the courtesy tone. I was just wondering what others were
using as the courtesy tone on their CAT300s. Any DTMF stings to play
with and get ideas from would be appreciated.
If anyone has any hints/tips/tricks/cool ideas of things to program
into the controller I'd appreciate hearing them as well.

Lastly, if anyone has a copy of the CAT300DX programming software
(ED-300W) they'd be willing to loan out you would be my hero. Thanks.

  Alex

I like switching supplies... which likely makes me in the minority.
I've used several Duracomm, Astron, Samlex, and cannibalized computer-
grade supplies. The only ones that have caused me problems have been
the Astrons. I'm only a little over a year into using a Samlex 35A
switcher on a TPL-PA6-1AE-RXRF. The repeater has been up for over an
hour solid many times, but isn't what I'd call highly used. So far
no complaints (so far).

[Repeater-Builder] Tower Identification

2009-01-07 Thread Kris Kirby

How can I identify an otherwise unknown tower as Rohn 20, 25, 45, etc.
or even another tower manufacturer altogether?

I'm printing off the Rohn 25, 45, and 55 section details, but beyond
those drawings, I've no other clues to ID the tower.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] CAT300DX Programming

2009-01-07 Thread Jim Brown
Alex, I operated a CAT300 with a two tone rising bubble up for about 15 years
before linking that controller to another repeater last year.  At that time I
changed the CAT300 courtesy beep to a chime since I was getting a two tone DTMF
courtesy beep through the link, indicating that the repeaters are linked.  A
local user on the CAT300 repeater hears the two tone DTMF plus chime as long as
the repeaters are linked, and hears only the chime if the repeaters have been
disconnected.

Details of the operation and combining the CAT300 with the RLS1000 are
contained in the forum:

http://sbarcnm.org/forum/index.php?board=3.0

A lot more info there than you need, but it explains how I used the courtesy
beep as telemetry to show the state of the system - linked or unlinked.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] 30A power supply suggestion

2009-01-07 Thread Eric Lemmon
Andreas,

I've had no problems at all with any of the following switch-mode power
supplies:

DuraComm LP-25, 22 amperes continuous, 25 amperes short-term, about US$ 122
Samlex SEC1223, 23 amperes continuous, 25 amperes short-term, about US$ 106
Astron SS-30, 25 amperes continuous, 30 amperes short-term, about US$ 114

The above power supplies can be purchased through commercial communications
supply houses, such as Tessco, Talley, and Hutton. The Samlex and Astron
power supplies are also available through Amateur Radio suppliers, such as
AES and HRO. Despite some uninformed claims to the contrary, the above
switch-mode power supplies do not generate interference with nearby radio
systems- which is why they are recommended by the majority of commercial
radio manufacturers.
