[Repeater-Builder] Re: Getting mice out of a repeater sight
Originally Decon was just a mixture of corn meal and portland cement, hardly dangerous poisons. The principle was that rats and mice cannot regurgitate what they have eaten. Then the cement would harden and the rodent would starve. Somewhere along the line Warifin, a blood anticoagulant, was added to the mix to cause the rodent to bleed to death internally. Al, K9SI snip Rat poison (Decon, etc) works, but you have to realize HOW it works - it's a two-part mix. When the rat eats it, the first part is a drug that makes him thirsty. He leaves the building, finds water, and drinks. Thats when the second part goes into action - the poison dissolves and kills him. He's supposed to die outside at the water hole. At least that's what the plan was. But even good plans fail. And if the rat has already drank, the poison dissolves immediately after he eats it and you have dead rats all over the place. Or if the mouse or rat does get outside, a snake can eat him. Then you get secondary kills of beneficial life forms (the snakes keep the mouse and rat population down). Then the hawk catches and eats the dying snake, and the hawk dies. Overall, it's better to plug the holes first than to spread poison around. Mike WA6ILQ snip
Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Getting mice out of a repeater sight
An old trick was to leave a Brillo pad around, or better yet use it to stuff the holes and cracks. The theory was that the mice would eat the fat based soap that was in the pad and the steel pieces would kill them. This goes back many years, so I don't know if Brillo pads are still made the same way as they used to be. Joe

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Getting mice out of a repeater sight
First throw 3 pythons in there. Leave them for a few weeks. I would say leave them forever, but when it gets cold they will try to warm themselves on the repeater and if they get stuck they will cause a big mess. So since you probably won't be able to find the pythons you have to thrown in a couple of mongooses. Or is it mongeese?Anyway to get rid of the mongooses you have to put a hawk in there. When the hawk is done eating the mongooses, hopefully you can just open the door and he will fly out, because getting a mountain lion in there might be a little tough. Of course if that is too complicated you can go to Home Depot and get some glue traps and box traps. With the traps you don't have to worry about what corner they decided to die in and stink up the site as you do with poison. Actually that is another option if you really want to use poison you can just put the band Poison in there and have them start playing. That is sure to drive anything living out of the site. I know the bass player so I can get you a quote if you want. I am sure they aren't charging too much to play anymore. I need some input, what's the best way to clean it up, anything in particular? All the covers were on, so I don't think they got inside, but haven't pulled the cover off yet. Any ideas? Thanks, Jed

You could always hook your HT to the I/O port and check sensitivity then connect it to the duplex port and see if it's about the same. That's a REAL easy benchmark. Just a comment on the SS scrubbing pads - I use them for soldering iron cleaners (stuff it in a small can) and for paint/varnish removal, rust removal, etc. I buy mine at the dollar store, 3 or 4 on a card for, you guessed it, a dollar. Afternoon Wes, please send my regards to chuck and Kacie and crew, I havent been to an ARES in placer in a few years now. I hope the team is doing well, and I may be in to visit late this year. On topic now, the go to the local machine shop and ask them for the floor sweepings after a good day of work. they usually will have bunches of razor sharp steal wool that has been cut from the products they build, such as what come off the lathe. I have also used mangled screen vent for the attic or basement and shoved it inot an opening. it dont restrict air flow but isnt going to be pushed or eatin out of the way either. [Repeater-Builder] Talking clock has failed on our RC-85 V5.2 FW Fixed!
Thanks to all of you for your replies. It seems it was the Y2K issue. After reading all the replies here, and the info in the links given, the fix was tried and it worked! This was done many years ago by a past member and it was forgotten about until this month! I guess it may have been July, 1999 when it was done last? No dates were recorded when it was done. To make the operation easier, the required numbers and symbols were typed into an audio editing program that has a DTMF tone generation option. This was used to program the changes over the air and phone. It was fast and easy. We learned 2 new things from all this. It's been suggested that we have a spare v 5.2 eprom on hand for the future. A newer controller is still being considered with this being a working spare. We still offer an auto-patch so some research has to be done first. I'm told that there is a daughter board that allows a newer eprom to be used. I would like more info on wiring/building this board and the replacement eprom to use. Does one have to read the current eprom, or is that data posted somewhere? I have access to a high end programmer as well as someone to use it if I run into trouble. I would rather not disturb a working eprom by reading it. I've joined the ACC group and will post future rc-85 issues there first. Thank you all for your help. Glen wa6mha
