Re: [Repeater-Builder] Radio or Duplex watts

2010-05-27 Thread Mike Morris

Actually a duplexer does have a wattage - it has a
power LIMIT.

The small chinese duplexers use a tiny, low voltage
capacitor inside each stage and the have a limit of
35-40 watts.
I have a small duplexer here that has a limit of 50 watts and
a large rack mount unit that has a limit of several hundred watts.

Things aren't pretty when a duplexer arcs over internally.
You have half a chance of repairing the ones that are
bolted together. The ones that are welded together
make halfway decent doorstops.

Ted, you're the filter guy.

I have a DB products DB4379-4404B 4 channel UHF combiner. You did a little
bit of tuning on it once in the shop.

Do you know, or can you find out, if it can be turned into two, 2 channel
combiners?

I want to combine 461.625, 461.650, 463.625 463.650 but the combiner is
speced at 50KHz spacing. There are two splits of only 25KHz on the
frequencies I need to work with.

Combining 461.625 and 463.625 on one combiner and antenna and combine
461.650 and 463.650 on another combiner and antenna would save me antennas
and feedline and lots of money if I can modify the combiner I own.

It can be done, although slightly different that what your first
impression of the required hardware would be. You would also need
two hybrid combiners and possibly some additional filtering with
the DB unit.

2010-05-27 Thread Jeff Ackerman
If you wanted to go with 2 2ch combiners instead of 1, you can put 451.525
and 453.525 on one and 451.550 and 453.550 on another if your worried about
desence and such. But you would want to get a hybrid coupler, 2 inputs, 1
output and 1 port for dummyload.

If he can disconnect the output of the cans from the antenna adaptor then he
can split it into two separate 2 channel units.

He might have to remount two of the cans in a separate chassis to eliminate
any mutual coupling as necessary.

LOL! I'm gonna check my glasses prescription.

FWIW, I had a similar issue with a split antenna rptr many years ago and
resolved it by swapping antennas. The complaining stick was on the xmtr side.
When it was just dealing with signal levels, it was as quiet as a church
mouse. It was a temporary fix and I doubted it would last very long but
surprisingly it outlasted the repeater itself.

You might try finding a spec for a similar maybe same model 2ch

We've had similar problems at 2 sites with separate TX RX antennas. One
would start generating noise after a lightning strike, so we swapped them,
putting the struck antenna on RX. Been working fine since.
