[Repeater-Builder] Re: Adding capacitors to lower electric bill
We had our fill of those here, too. The hot side of the AC line (if you were lucky, polarized plugs were rare in those days) was connected directly to a 35W4 or some such half wave rectifier tube and later to a selenium half wave rectifier with the other side of the AC line being connected as the negative lead (fortunately NOT to the chassis). Usually, there were a couple of 0.01uf capacitors from each side of the line to the chassis, however. Doubt I need to explain the joys one could experience with that arrangement! And, to top it off, each and every one of those radios proudly bore our UL stamp of approval! They used to call them AC/DC radios because, if you lucked out and got the polarity right, the radio didn't care what the source was as long as it was somewhere near 100 volts DC or RMS. Tom --- In Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com, Gordon Cooper zl...@... wrote: Another quirk. Sixty plus years ago in England, power factor was not the main concern. Many of the domestic radio receivers were transformerless and used half-wave rectification to obtain D.C. for the tubes. A consequence was a fair dose of D.C. flowing in the street power mains. I have had a further look at it today and might have found the reason for the high swr .The coil didn't seem to be earthing in the braid .When moving the coax the swr was all over the place .I re crimped the coil under the coax braid and the swr is now below 1.5:1 on the marine channels . [Repeater-Builder] Spectrum Comms SCR200A 220 receiver question
I've been working on a clubs 223.96Mhz repeater that the receiver lost sensitivity. It went deaf, so much that the squelch would not even work. It appears that the plastic variable capacitors in the front end have gone bad. It was in a very damp water tank environment and this summer was just too much for it. Anyway, has anyone found a good ceramic replacement for the plastic caps that are a drop-in replacement for the plastic caps in a Spectrum receiver? I think I'm just going to change them all and be done with it. The caps in the 220 version of the receiver are 20 picofarads. The club has 5 more Spectrum receivers that will probably need cap replacement too, some on 2 meters, 440 and 220. I only want to do this once and make it an easy repair. If I found a good replacement part I'll buy a load of them in various sizes. It seems that there is a very low interest in repeater repair over the years. I get many requests for fixing repeaters, and I'm surprised that it is so hard get someone to even hold the flashlight. It's discouraging.I would like to see some interest for the future of repeaters and ham radio. Others experiencing this? The younger hams just don't seem to have the curiosity that I had years ago. 73, Joe, k1ike
RE: [Repeater-Builder] Spectrum Comms SCR200A 220 receiver question
Joe, No help on the caps but felt like commenting on the other part of your post. I have seen some of the same things. I have had people say that they want to help with the repeater but if you call they are never available. They always have some reason why they can't help yet they are the first to call when there is a problem with the repeater. On a more positive note... I took both of my boys to the Huntsville Hamfest over the past weekend and they both really enjoyed it. They have grown up around ham radio, have made international DX contacts, and have helped me tune MASTR II units and duplexers. My youngest son is the more technically minded of the two and he was completely fascinated with many of the items in the flea market section of the hamfest. It was really good to see him so interested. There were a number of people that felt the same way because he came home with a bag full of free stuff that people gave him and I think some of it was because of his enthusiasm and interest. I don't think the future is hopeless but I do think that youth need more exposure to ham radio and all of its many aspects. The trimmer caps should be easy to find at Jameco, Hamtronics, Digikey and Mouser. If you have nothing to lose, try a small amount of Caig Labs DeOxit first. s. Hello Ross, I'm glad to hear that you are interested in repeaters! I hope that someone in your area elmers you so that the tradition can continue. Repeaters are a difficult thing to just jump into and the test equipment that is nice to have can get expensive. 73, Joe, K1ike On 8/24/2010 5:20 PM, Ross Johnson wrote: Others experiencing this? [Repeater-Builder] Re: Intermod Calculation
We also had a problem with a 454 pager. Quintron with a 1/4 k amp. Only one in the metro area had a spur, but that one traveled as the PA cage changed temperature. Got a hold of the paging company, and they turned each one off until we saw the spur go away. Final tube had been replaced and not properly neutralized. WalterH --- In Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com, Tom W2MN w...@... wrote: We had a pager spur problem with our repeater (no pl). The problem would come and go. We determined it happened mostly with time of day (outside temperature). Sometime it was just a short 1 second event and sometimes it would hold for a bit more (maybe 2 -5 sec). We setup a satellite multimode radio (actually dial in the frequency with widest bandwidth setting) and monitored the repeater input with a tape recorder and vox. We did this to capture the audio so we could listen to characteristics and THE CW CALLSIGN. We captured enough of the callsign that we were able to indentify the whole call (and freq) from the FCC database. With that, we were able to monitor the repeater and the pager for hits. Yes, it did hit some times and not others. The reason was, it was caused by an unstable spur that drifted up and down the ham band with temperature and the amount of pager traffic. It was also hitting other repeaters as it drifted but most of the other repeaters had pl. There was a chain of pagers using the same freq and callsign and we had to figure out which tower it was. We used a beam antenna and chased the spur up/down the band until we were able to get a definite direction. The next step as to visit the site AREA with an HT and just scan the ham repeater input freqs during the likely time of day. Bingo, the spur was loud and clear!. Of course the pager owner was in denial but being a pest for a couple of weeks got the problem removed. They claim it was a spur in the final PA that had been serviced just at the time the problem started. They replaced the PA. Hope this story helps. Tom
