Maybe 'having it' is ok, but using it is not legal. Maybe he thinks

Sorry, but if it transmits in the amateur authorized portion of the
microwave band, it IS legal. Just because it may set off a nearby radar
detector doesn't make it illegal, because the radar detector is a RECEIVER that
is supposed to pick up microwave signals.(...and it's not necessary to have a
license for a receiver, except for those states that make it illegal to
specifically use a radar detector in a vehicle for the purpose of avoiding
getting caught speeding). And radar detectors, especially the cheaper ones, are
fairly broadbanded, so they will trip on signals that aren't necessarily true
radar signals. I have read of some being set off by harmonics from a nearby
amateur 440 MHz or 900 MHz transmitter.
Regardless of what the vehicle LOOKED like, the focus of the legal
situation is going to be whether or not the person was deliberately attempting
to look or act like law enforcement, something none of us can determine by
looking at a picture.

RE: Re: [Repeater-Builder] Simplex repeater hardware

2005-05-19 Thread Buley, Kenneth L \(GE Consumer Industrial\)
A simplex repeater controller connected to a radio set for split operation
(different TX and RX freqs) CAN eliminate the problem of hearing everything
twice, at the expense of being careful not to double on the input freq. and
having a delay between RX and TX. HTs or mobiles programmed reverse split of
repeater radio will operate somewhat like a regular repeater, without the
simultaneous RX/TX.

hear every transmission twice. That gets old, really quick!

True, but there are instances where a SR makes sense. Quick deployment for low
volume comms is
one. Rescue ops, public service events, etc...

Training BEFOREHAND is always recommended so that the users can become
accustomed to its odd
behavior. PL is also recommended to keep the SR from repeating everything on
the frequency and
annoying co-channel users.

It uses what looks like a JFET type VCO oscillator running with a

in this case and used to sync lock a free running 70.45 RX L.O injection
oscillator and is the clock reference for the TX exciter PLL. I used an
outboard 10 mhz ovenized oscillator to set it up and it was tuned up as a
special from the vendor on our requested freq.

It is likely not 2ppm itself, but in a stable environment it may
be ok without an ovenized reference. It can use about any reference that is
compatible with the programming. It has no mod port as it is more designed
to replace a crystal than replace the channel element. The RX performance
of the station after the mod was slightly lower with this unit as opposed
to my service monitor generating the 17.6125 in other tests. I guess that
means it does exhibit some sideband noise which influenced operation but
the spec sheet and printouts that come with it indicate pretty decent
specs.. at least for a pll/vco.

Not an answer for all but a very interesting development for ham

It is a re-imported Motorola export only HT that covers commercial/ham, can be

cheap on eBay and, once programmed, is fairly easy to use, but, again, don't

Mr. Grizzard-
So now I ask YOU, are you normally this oblivious, or is this a special
case? As you state below, the thread evolved into discussing coordination.

The squelch sense issue was *WELL* addressed in recent threads here. It is
also covered on several web sites in very, very basic transistor logic
handbooks. Why do you propose beating that dead horse, Mr. Grizzard?

DPL is to DCS as PL is to CTCSS...in other words, they are different names for
the same thing.
And GE's name is CG or Channel Guard.

We all know what carrier squelch is so I won't go
there.

CTCSS (Private line) is also well known.

Now most newer ham gear has DCS CTCSS.

My question is about DPL, is this compatabile with
DCS?

If so will DCS do inverted code like DPL?

Lastly without getting into Part 97 to much is DCS
or DPL authorized for use in the ham spectrum for
repeater use?

RE: [Repeater-Builder] snide remarks

2004-12-02 Thread Buley, Kenneth L \(GE Consumer Industrial\)

Uhhh... coordinators DO have the authority to set the terms
for whichthey will grant (or deny) a coordination. That is correct,
they have the "authority" to set any terms that happen to please them, however,
they have no authority, other than denial of "coordination", to prevent anyone
from operating without being "coordinated".If you say the
coordinator has no authority torequire specifications, then what IS a
coordination? Answer: It's a setof operating conditions which must be met in
order to get along withother cochannel and adjacent channel operations. That
INCLUDES requiringCTCSS/CDCSS.Again, true, however, they have no
authority to ENFORCE those requirements.Coordination only works because
the participating parties VOLUNTEER to agree to the terms of the coordination as
a means of reducing or eliminating interference. The FCC "suggests" the use of
coordinating bodies because it takes the workload off of THEM !!However, it
is the FCC who ultimately has AUTHORITY to decide and the power to ENFORCE those
decisions concerning interference whether "coordination" is involved or
not.The FCC themselves have ruled in favor of repeaters
operatingCTCSS/CDCSS when all other factors are equal (both
holdingcoordinations, operating within their coordinations, etc) when it
comesto interference issues.See previous
comment.Coordination works when (most) everyone wants to play nice,
together. If EVERYONE wanted to get along, then "coordination" would be
unnecessary. My nickel's worth, your mileage may vary.

  Old School.

Wrap your windshield wipers with aluminum foil. When you in a
static rich area you simply run your wipers to discharge your
windshield. Intermittent wiper for low voltage and high speed wiper for
  high voltage.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Propogation Prediction

2004-08-31 Thread Buley, Kenneth L \(GE Consumer Industrial\)
10 foot resolution ? That's kind of hard to predict unless you're standing
next to the antenna. Those other parameters are necessary to predict ANYTHING.
Kind of like asking a meteorologist if it's going to rain. His answer will
definitely be YES. But that means it could rain ANYWHERE on ANY DAY in ANY
AMOUNT. If you want to know specific details, you have to provide SOME
limiting, specific information.
Cable loss, antenna types, tower height, etc., all affect propogation, so that
info is needed to predict what the propogation MAY be. The presence of other
towers may mean that the tower owners could only afford that location,
propogation not withstanding.

Hi doug and the group...

I looked at the samples in the website mentioned.

Question...(s)...
Is this a DOS program running windows or a linux program? I saw file names with
formatting of each.

100m resolution? Kinda vague I was hoping for a 10 foot resolution.

What if I dod not know all the paramaters to get a look at a probable site...
such as cable loss, antenna types, tower height and etc All I know is that
there are other towers there...

Any way I'll try it but for a dial up, it'll take a day or two to download.

Seriously, ever think about using a simplex repeater ??? One radio, one antenna, no duplexer, can run off of batteries, can run on 1 frequency or 2 if you choose, no retuning or rearranging anything if you need to change frequencies.
