These are Merticom (now called Cedllnet ) radios that utilities use to automate there distribution systems. Also for automated meter reading. They work in the 902 to 928 Mhz band and are spread spectrum frequency hopping. In some parts of the country (So Cal) there are thousands of these radios in operation. The radios in the pictures and Ricochet were originally made by the same company, Metricom. This company was started by Southern California Edison.Metriconmade both radio systems, that werethe Ricochet and the Utilinetradios systems.They sold off the utilinet radios and thatradio system has been sold several times, now made by a company called Cellnet.Metricom company kept the Ricochet system and installed the system in several cities around the US. Than Metricom went bankrupt and theRicochet system wassold to a company in Denver, but they neverhadmuch luck selling the systems to end users (only 19.2Kbs) Utilinet radios are used all over the place. They lost the DC feed to the "Circuit Switcher" on the high side of the transformer. There was no way for the fault to clear. More than likely the fusing was proper. Typically substation transformer size along with fusing is coordinated and engineered rather extensively. My suspicion is that a component failure may have contributed to the total failure of the transformer. It is possible the a fuse did open, but that the fuse holder assembly could have failed in such a way that an arc continued the current flow regardless of the open fuse.
