[Repeater-Builder] Re: Crystals information.

2010-04-08 Thread burkleoj
Eric,
I do not think that will work.

The crystals are cut different due to the design differences in the elements.

The Mitrek/MSR2000 channel elements are a critter all their own. Some folks
have had some good success re-crystaling their own elements and some have not.

Good Luck.

 Hello everyone,

I'm wondering if I can use crystal from a UHF Micor repeater to a MSR2000?
Are they operate on the same harmonic?

I know the chanel element are different, I would like to swap the crystal.

 Thank you for your help.

I don't see a connection between how long the order takes
and whether or not the crystals are flawless. Knowing that
a properly-made and -compensated crystal takes time, I'd shy
away from a company that has a very short turnaround.

Most every Crystal Company has a Red-Eye 24 hour crystal
manufacturing service.

Perhaps the longer turnaround time with orders at ICM is due
to ICM getting a lot of new business from disgruntled customers
 of other crystal suppliers.

I would venture to say no... They've always been the painfully
slow boat.

If you ever get the opportunity to tour the Bomar crystal plant,
do so, and take plenty of pictures and keep careful notes. Follow
a particular crystal order through the process from order-taking
to shipment. Then, do the same thing at ICM. Write an article
about your findings, and draw some conclusions. I am quite
 certain it will be interesting!

We only care about a good dollar value, the end result and how
long it takes. I wouldn't care if there was a Picasso on the wall
at the plant as long as I get my order as promised. Bomar has
never farted up one of my orders and I order a lot of crystals.
Best of all the price for re-rocking my own channel elements is
easily better than 3dB down from the same order with ICM.

And credit where it's due...
ICM has never farted up an order of mine... but again I mention
the Wal Mart effect is most often the race winner. Everyone
shops at Wal Mart these days don't they..? :-)

Funny how all the crystal stories work out. I used
to buy mostly Jan, but they couldn't seem to make
a low cost UHF Crystal that didn't drift with moderate
temp changes. Crystek is/was a commercial part of
Jan, but I've had about the same results as using
the straight Jan products. For my HF VHF crystal
requirements, Jan was number one for some years...

I used and still use ICM for some crystals, but they
are very expensive. I've only had one bum crystal
from ICM, which they offered to replace.

I currently buy mostly Bomar, the cost is fair and
I've not yet has a bum UHF or VHF crystal after the
300 plus purchased in the last few years.

Most companies will re-rock a commercial channel
element. I tend to buy the bare crystal and do it
myself. So far, so good...

I've not heard much good about West Crystals... their
problems seem to be mostly dealing with US/Canadian
Customs and shipping costs. The product might be ok,
but the shipping adventure has been a nightmare for
more that one member of this group.

Jan has been very troublesome in the 25+ years I have
been a ham, you hear of a lot of complaints.

Bomar gave me a couple of bum crystals and then a
few that drifted back in the days 2M crystal radios.
I used them since they were a few towns away
from me in NJ but I quit using them.

In the past 5 years I have used West Crystal in
Ontario 4 times and they gave me EXCELLENT FAST!!!
service. I sent the element in and back came a
perfect element for several Mastr II's. Since West
is over the border PLEASE follow this suggestion...
do not use UPS use the Postal Service it is faster
cheaper and you have less hassles. Mark on the form,
Amateur Radio Parts for Service and you should have
no trouble. I did not do that one time and West
Crystal got charged by UPS all sorts of Import
and Custom fees. The other 3 times when I used
the Post Office we had no problems at all.
