RE: [Repeater-Builder] star washers on db antennas

2008-02-18 Thread Eric Lemmon
Robert,

Stainless steel lock washers, including the star variety, are very easy to
find- you just need to get them from an industrial supplier. My favorite
source is McMaster-Carr: www.mcmaster.com

Go to the above Web site, and enter star washers in the find products
window. Then select stainless steel and go from there. Note that
zinc-plated and galvanized are among the many other material options. Now,
you must choose between 18-8 and 410 stainless steel.

If you want more options, search for lock washers and you'll have a lot
more styles and metals to choose from.

I have found stainless steel U-bolts, threaded rod, Uni-Strut, and all sorts
of oddball hardware there. I'll admit that McMaster-Carr prices are a bit
high on some items, but the convenience of ordering hard-to-find items
online is worth it. Gas prices being what they are, I can buy a heck of a
lot of stainless steel hardware for the cost of driving to several stores,
especially when I come back empty-handed! Anything I order before noon one
day is on my doorstep the following day, even with UPS Ground. The
warehouse is in Los Angeles, and UPS routinely gets the shipment in time to
make deliveries to Lompoc the next day. The usual financial disclaimer
applies...

Whatever you do, replace them with stainless screws, washers and lock

Don't know, as I don't have one of those antennas, but if you need
stainless steel star washers just call Berg Hardware in Pasadena Calif.
(626-793-6161). John Berg has ALL kinds of weird hardware, and
they will sell one if you need it...

I've walked in there and asked for a few weird sizes of screws (like
5-36 or 1-72), and the counterman asked Phillips or slotted head ?,
Then brass, nylon, steel or stainless steel ?

It's a rare place - a third generation family owned hardware store,
in business for over 75 years. They sell everything from cast iron
cookware to 6 colors of 18 ga zip cord to Mag flashlights to MEK
by the quart or gallon to coil springs by the inch to braided stainless
steel jacketed fuel lines (the owner is a salt flats racer) to furniture
restoration hardware. And they do mail order.

And no, I'm just a very satisfied retail customer (since 1965).
