Not a bad suggestion _per se_, unless the ‘--yes’ option was used. Doing that,
without a current backup in hand, is very reminiscent of a game the Russians
invented back in the nineteenth century. You start with a revolver and one
bullet…

Cheers!

That part, I can relate to, unfortunately.
( yeah, the data recovery guy without a backup. Go figure )

It's so easy to make a backup immediately before doing anything
like that, I can't even begin to tell you how incompetent I felt at
that moment, but it does happen even to the best of us.

I got the data back ( I always get the data back ) but not without
pain, embarrassment, wailing and gnashing of teeth, and two days
which would have been better spent on other things.

I've also learned that if there are other potential causes, such as
what Fred suggested, look at the other potential causes before
concluding the database is at fault.
If I do conclude, not that the database is faulty, but that I can't find
any other cause, then I call Paravel support.
Usually, he says something like "Uh, you need to talk to Fred."
When that happens, I shut up, sit down, and basically get out of the way.
Usually, about 5 minutes later, it's fixed.

Since we get the "potential release candidate" before you do,
this is not a frequent, but also not an infrequent occurrence.

That tells me that the audio store was inaccessible. *Why* that was (device
unmounted, NFS problem, etc) I’ve no way of knowing, but put it back and re-run
rddbcheck(8), and it should be restore all of the cut lengths.

Cheers!

[RDD] Bizarre database problem

2018-06-09 Thread Rob Landry

A client of mine has been running RD 2.15 for a while on Debian 6.

On Thursday, they called me to say they were getting an error when trying
to edit markers on audio cuts.

I suggested they might have a database problem and suggested running
rddbcheck. That proved to be a spectacularly bad suggestion, as it
adjusted the length of every audio cut to zero!

They didn't have a recent database backup, so I had to grab the database
from one of their other stations (which has an identical audio library)
and use it. That worked, even if I had to re-enter all their events,
clocks, and grid hours manually (because, unlike the audio library, these
are not the same between the two stations).

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Rob

[RDD] Log Importation Changes

2018-06-09 Thread Jamie Dominey
I finally found time to update from 2.18.2 to 2.19.2.  Is there a way to
disabled this new feature?  It makes it difficult to set the position of
voice tracks over the song intros if there is a music import tag in the log.

"Log Importation Changes. Changed music and traffic importation so that
parent link events are still visible in linked logs."
