Yes, the audio also has to be uncompressed / linear audio for it to work. But it does work. I may have mentioned before that my cluster is considering switching to Rivendell from AudioVault Flex. I've been working on the project off and on for a while now. One feature we have in AudioVault is the ability to record a cut from a source much like in RDCatch, but be able to play back the cut while it is being recorded. For example, we start recording Westwood One news at the top of the hour, but won't play it back until after the local news is done. Sometimes this will be after the recording is finished, but often the program is still recording when playback starts. Simple question, is it possible to do this with Rivendell 3.x? There are however a couple of caveats about this feature: 1) Normalization and auto trim for the recording must both be turned off. That’s because the implementation of those features requires two processing passes: one to capture the audio, and a second to analyze the results and reprocess the initial capture into the final file. Hence, the recorded data is not available to the Library until the entire cut has been recorded. 2) When playing a cut while it is being recorded, the effective length of the cut will be that of the previous contents of that cut. This is a side-effect of how the log logic works in RDAirPlay; all cuts *must* have a length that is known at the time the play-out begins. Cheers! |--| | Frederick F. Re: [RDD] Playback while recording
Regarding starting playout of a cut after starting to record into it (playout while recording) I just tried this, and I think the last time I tried this was on the pre-version 2.x of Rivendell (1.x.x). I seem to recall it working in the past. I just tried it on Rivendell 2.12.0 with an m-audio Delta card, both going through Jack and ALSA. I may be missing something, but I don't think I am. I've got normalization and auto trim off. If there is no audio in the cut when the cut is added to rdairplay, then it won't play anything if recording into the cut has already started but the recording has not completed. If there is audio in the cut, then it'll grab the length of audio that is there, and only play that amount of audio even if the recording is still ongoing. I've found a similar experience when using RDCatch to do the playout event. I've tried this recording both through RDCatch and through the record option in RDLibrary. Found the same results each time I've tested. For starting recording after you've started the playout - this works as expected - the playout will continue to play the audio that was there before you started the record. I do recall this worked in Rivendell 1.x.x, but I have not tried this feature since then. Re: [RDD] Playback while recording
Hey Matthew, I don't know if someone else answered your question yet so I'll give you what I've picked up through some other discussions. In short, no. Rivendell currently can not play back the new version of what is currently recording. The recording must finish completely before it can play in Rivendell. I too would really really really love to have that feature implemented. It would greatly help up my efforts to make Rivendell my main and only automation system. (currently Riv runs my music and my other system runs commercials and my 6min TOH CBS News) There is a really good thread from March 17th in the Rivendell Open Source Radio Automation facebook group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1739406449620107/ Some of the good quotes from John Anderson, a Paravel support guy, in that FB group thread. "Rivendell can actually record to a cart that is playing, and the show that is playing will finish properly, (and will be replaced with the new show, immediately upon completion" "What Rivendell does do well, is allow you to update a cart that is currently playing on the air, while it is playing..allow you to play back that cart, then update it, so if you played it back the next time, you have the new material" What you and I want to accomplish with recording a Top of Hour network newscast and playing it back slightly delayed is not currently possible in Rivendell. That is the top thing on my short list of things I think Rivendell is missing. It would be probably best in situations where there was a fixed record duration, like a hard timed newscast. Playing back a floating time segment while it's still recording would be much tricker due to the fact that you couldn't know how long the currently playing segment would wind up being. I couldn't begin to guess at the ease or difficulty of writing the code to make that work, but I would be overjoyed if it could happen Brad Beahm Operations Manager Platte River Radio Hastings and Kearney, NE On Thu, May 5, 2016 at 4:14 PM, Matthew Chambers wrote: > I've noticed that Rivendell plays back the previous hours recording of our > hourly news, which gets recorded into a cart from xx:00 to xx:04 every > hour.
