invitation to the 700MBG opening: "SINGLE SIGN ON" by Florian Kuhlmann, Germany starting today, june 1st, at www.700MBG.com * In his solo show the artist presents his signature on a blank and yet recordable compact disc. Besides offering his 700 MB space to the audience - as a blank "masterpiece" that is signed by the artist beforehand and has to be fullfilled by the collector or simply a wickedly expensive and trashy DIY design storage space - he touches fundamental questions of authorship, material, media, marketing and arts. He combines the idea of uniqueness and originality with mass production, plays with the process of writing on- and into and with simply tagging the carrier he draws the attention onto the cd as an object while at the same time he is encouraging the imagination for the infinite possibilities that might have been or maybe will occur in the digital space on/in it. Achim Kubinski: Nam Chau, eine Entdeckung Die vietnamesisch-deutsche Künstlerin NAM CHAU, deren Mutter in einem französischen Flüchtlingslager aufgewachsen ist, hat schon - vor dem Abschluss ihrer Ausbildung - im Kreise eines eingeweihten Fachpublikums Aufmerksamkeit und Ansehen erworben. Ihr außergewöhnliches Talent und eine virtuose Malweise, die keine technischen Probleme zu kennen scheint, vereint sich mit der Passion eines Anliegens, durch intensivstes Arbeiten ihre vom Verbot des Fragens nach ihrer Herkunft geprägte Kindheit und Jugend zu bewältigen und das Thema des ausgelöschten Gedächtnisses im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes abzuarbeiten. So wie ihre Mutter nicht nach Vietnam fragen durfte, so bestand für Nam CHAU das unausgesprochene Verbot, nach der Vergangenheit ihrer Mutter zu fragen, so gibt es kein einziges Familienbild aus dem Camp, da entweder keine entstanden sind oder alle weggeworfen wurden. In einem „artist statement“ schreibt NAM CHAU: I took some black and white photos from the web, which where taken at the time my family lived there. I painted them. This had something forbidden about it. It was as if I were not allowed to show it or reveal the image. This is perhaps why I blurred the paintings all over again. One of the first paintings I called: ‘This is not my family’”. Ihr in wenigen Jahren bereits zu einem Oeuvre beachtlichen Umfangs angewachsenes Werk ist anfänglich - wie auch das Werk vieler ihrer asiatischen Kollegen - vom fotografischen Realismus Gerhard Richters beeinflusst. Das entspricht ihrem Sujet, das ausschließlich aus fotografischen Dokumenten ausgeht, die für sie an die Stelle ihrer totgeschwiegenen Familiengeschichte treten und ihr Ahnung und Vorstellung von Biografie und Herkunft bedeuten. Mit dem Wechsel an die UDK und der damit verbundenen Betreuung durch Prof. Leiko Ikemura sowie dem zusätzlichen Privatunterricht an der SCHOOL OF BERLIN hat sie sich von der Referenz auf bekannte Vorbilder gelöst und ist im Begriff, eine unverwechselbare eigenständige Handschrift zu entwickeln. Ihre Gewissheit über ihre individuelle, nur ihr eigene "Vision", die einem geübten Auge schon von Anfang an sichtbar wurde, zeigt sich in den Arbeiten der letzten Zeit in aller Deutlichkeit, was uns Grund genug schien, die Malerin nun einem internationalen Fachpublikum vorzustellen. So wichtig es einerseits ist, eine junge Künstlerin, die sich noch in der Entwicklung der eigenen Bildsprache befindet, der breiten Öffentlichkeit auf schonende Weise vorzustellen, so unumgänglich ist es andererseits, objektive Begabung und Talent zu einem frühen Zeitpunkt mit denjenigen zu konfrontieren, die auf entsprechender Stufe als Sammler, Kuratoren, Galeristen oder Kritiker das künftige Werk zu begleiten haben. Sinn und Zweck dieser Präsentation, die sich über einen längeren Zeitraum erstrecken und von unterschiedlichen Rahmenveranstaltungen begleitet werden soll, ist in erster Linie die Begegnung mit einem jungen Werk dem eine große Zukunft bevorsteht. Die Bauhaus Summer School bietet folgenden Workshop in englischer Sprache an: Pure Data is an easy to learn data-flow programming language for musicians and artists. It allows the creation of musical compositions, sound design, instruments, interactive installations, real-time video processing and more. Its design is inspired by the way early telecommunication switchboards and modules of analogue synthesizers were interconnected by patch cords. Pure Data is free open source software. It runs on Linux, OS X, Windows and even mobile devices. The workshop will give you the opportunity to choose your curriculum individually from a number of parallel sessions of the best Pure Data instructors and well known community members on a wide range of topics and levels. Juni, statt. Unser Gast ist Dr. JUSSI PARIKKA (s. Bio unten). Sein Vortrag "Medianatures" und die anschließende Diskussion sind auf Englisch. Moderation: Paul Feigelfeld. -- Medianatures This talk riffs off from Donna Haraway’s influential concept of naturecultures which established one framework to think about the topological continuity from nature to culture. As such, it was an important spark for the discourse on “new materialism” in cultural studies, a form of rethinking materiality in new ways outside a Marxist or a representational framework. Naturecultures – also resonating with a range of positions such as Latour’s – is a way to think through the multiple materialities we encounter in terms of contemporary technological society. The talk extends naturecultures into a more medium-specific direction with the concept of medianatures. By discussing media materialism and its relation to “new materialist” debates as well as “medium-specificity”, the talk addresses ways to think through the technical and scientific specificity of contemporary media – beyond meaning, representation and the human body, the fact that technical media engage in such processes, speeds, and phenomena that escape the phenomenological human register per se. Yet, the talk points towards a different kind of reading of media materiality than often found in “media materialist” accounts. We can question the notion of specificity and argue that there are various specificities from which we can draw upon. While German media theory (acknowledging that the term is in itself not very apt) has been insisting on drawing on materialities that can be directly connected to the important scientific contexts of technical media, we can think through a milieu theory of media: how media establish but also draw on nature, animals and other non-human intensities, forces and potentialities. Instead of thinking nature here in terms of the metaphorics it has offered for a long time for media cultural phenomena, and avoiding proposing any form of purity of nature, I want to look at the continuums of not only naturecultures, but medianatures that is slightly different from the emphasis of media cultures as the “new” environment for us human beings. Instead we approach medianatures as affordances, as intensities, as regimes of affects and relations and as processes of mediatic nature that offer a non-human view to new materialist media theory. Hence, we end up talking about waste and nature. Bio Dr Jussi Parikka is Reader in Media & Design at Winchester School of Art (University of Southampton). He is also Adjunct Professor in Digital Culture Theory at University of Turku, Finland and for the Spring and Summer of 2011 a Visiting Research Fellow at Media Studies (Humboldt University, Berlin). His books include Koneoppi (2004, in Finnish), Digital Contagions: A Media Archaeology of Computer Viruses (2007), Insect Media: An Archaeology of Animals and Technology (2010), and the co-edited volumes The Spam Book: On Porn, Viruses and Other Anomalous Objects from the Dark Side of Digital Culture (2009) and Media Archaeology (2011).
