INTERTERRITORIAL EXPLORATIONS in ART and SCIENCE 2ND CO-OPs PUBLIC EVENT: Practices and Debates Utrecht, 28, 29 and 30 June 2007 Organized by CO-OPs and BAK,in collaboration with Universiteitsmuseum Utrecht BAK, center for contemporary art Lange Nieuwstraat 4 3512 PH Utrecht www.bak-utrecht.nl Sonnenborgh - museum observatory Zonnenburg 2, 3512 NL Utrecht www.sonnenborgh.nl CO-OPs CO-OPs is the name of a major art-science project launched in September 2006. The CO-OPs project centers on the question of the usefulness or even necessity of close collaboration between the arts and the sciences. CO-OPs is part of Transformations in Art and Culture, a research program funded by NWO. The participating scholars and scientists study various phenomena that are linked up with significant transformations in art and culture. The project focuses on three large-scale processes of change: globalization, commercialization and technologization. Seven teams, each consisting of a scholar or scientist and an artist, explore a specific concern tied to how scientific practices may benefit from artistic practices -- and vice versa, how knowledge from the artistic domain may stimulate scientific research. On 28, 29 and 30 June 2007 the preliminary results of the CO-OPs investigations will be presented in Utrecht. At this second CO-OPs public event, the seven project teams present and discuss their preliminary research results in Bastion Sonnenborgh. Is it possible for art and science to collaborate? Which new forms of theory may emerge from art/science collaboration? Did the collaborative teams generate new theoretical concepts or new reflections on art? Are hybrid forms of research possible at all? The teams present their work-in-progress in separate exhibits (to be visited by the public continuously). Based on films, photos, objects, scale models and drawings, the teams provide an overview of their effort's progress. In addition, two expert meetings take place in BAK, center for contemporary art in Utrecht. These meetings will be attended by invited external experts (scholars, scientists and artists) and the members of the CO-OPs teams. The first expert meeting is geared toward general questions concerning the relationship between art and science. The second expert meeting is specifically devoted to the potential contribution of the collaboration between art and science to research on issues involving technologization, commercialization and globalization. 'Back to the roots', by Alex van Stipriaan 'Back to the Roots' explores the meaning of roots for people who have been cut off from their ancestors as a result of the history of slavery. What is the significance of 'roots' in such situation? This question underlies the Back-to-the-Roots participants' quests for their origin. Reports on the genetic, physical, mental and aesthetic quest for African identity in diaspora. With the collaboration of visual artist Marcel Pinas, comedian Jetty Mathurin, Herby Goedhard, Kwinsie Cruden, Verno Romney, Stacey Esajas, Gwen Denswil, Charissa Doelwijt and Glynis Terborg. Team 3. 'In principio erat verbum', by Krien Clevis and Peter Hagoort Starting from 'fear' as a phenomenon, Peter Hagoort and Krien Clevis study the tension and interplay between word and image. Team 4. 'Medicine as a social science', by Mieke van de Voort and Ab Osterhaus This project, which starts from the thesis 'Medicine is a social science and politics nothing but medicine on a grand scale', reflects on the future scenarios in which the threat of an epidemic has become immediate. 19.00 - 22.00 hrs Symposium Food, Art and Science: In Vitro Meat In vitro meat is meat made in the laboratory by having stem cells grow into meat tissue. His last academic post was at the University of Michigan, where he was Visiting Professor in the Departments of Art, History of Art, and Psychology from 1974 to 1984. The previous American years of his long academic career were spent at Sarah Lawrence College from 1943 to 1968 and at Harvard in the Department of Visual and Enviromental Studies from 1968 to 1974. Born in Berlin in 1904, where his father was a manufacturer of pianos, Rudof Arnheim took his doctorate at the University of Berlin in 1928, with a dissertation of the experimental psychology of visual expression, and secundary studies in musicology and history of art. At the time Arnheim was enrolled in Berlin University's Institute of Psychology, it was the center of experimentation in Gestalt Psychology, with Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang K*hler, and Kurt Lewin the central authorities. Arnheim conducted some of the earliest experiments in the application of Gestalt theory in the perception of a work of art. Between 1928 and his departure from Nazi Germany in 1933, he was on the editorial staff of Die Weltb*hne, the influential weekly magazine then edited by Carl von Ossietzky and suppressed with the advent of the Third Reich. It was in this publication that Arnheim ventured into film criticism, a medium that became central to his theories of vision. The Maze Gefängnis entstand aus dem Long Kesh Internierungslager und umfasste einst mehr als tausend Gefangene. Es wurde zum Schauplatz für symbolischen Protest und radikaler Bewegung was dazu führte, das es einen speziellen Status und Aufmerksamkeit im Nord Irland Konflikt erlangte. Billy Hull war der am längsten dienende Sicherheits-Vollzugsbeamte des Maze/Lang Kesh Gefängnisses. Billy sammelte ohne Wissen der Gefängnispolizei Beweismaterial, das in Beziehung zu verschiedenen Menschen, Geschehnissen und Vorkommen stand. The nine artworks shown in the exhibition project anger_aggression use different methods to reflect on the everyday perception of this central theme largely without taking recourse to exceptional situations of the violence of war or terror. The prison The Maze arose from the internment camp Long Kesh and contained once more than one thousand convicts. It became the location of symbolic protest and radical movement, which led to the prisons special status and attention in the Northern Ireland conflict. It played an important role in peace talks and finally was closed on the 29th of september 2000. The first work, which developed out of her stay was the video Billy´s Museum. Billy Hull was the longest serving security enforcement officer at the Maze/ Lang Kesh prison. Without the knowledge of the prison police Billy collected means of evidence concerning different people, appearances and occurrences. When he retired he built a museum, which never has been open for the public. Zoe Beloff is a New York-based artist fascinated by phantoms, by images that, are not there, and by the 19th century mediums whose materialization séances conjured up unconscious desires, in the most theatrical fashion. Though lacking psychic abilities she confesses to relying on cinematic illusionism or the cinematic medium. Zoe Beloff works with techniques like stereoscopic imagery and dioramas that have largely been abandoned since the invention of the cinema, but also with with film, live 3-D projection performance, interactive cinema on CD-ROM and video installation. Wussten Sie, dass es genmanipuliertes Superunkraut gibt, das gegen gaengige Unkrautvernichtungsmittel, wie z.B. Roundup von Monsanto, resistent ist? Wie wuerden Sie auf die Aussage Remember, language is not free reagieren? Haben Sie schon mal was von Public Sculpture Climbing oder einer Tour de Fence gehoert? All dies sind Projekte, die in den letzten Jahren im Umfeld des Servers irational.org entstanden sind. Das CCA: The Centre for Contemporary Arts Glasgow zeigt vom 16. Juni bis 21. Juli 2007 die Ausstellung IRATIONAL.ORG Techniques, Tools and Events 1996 - 2006. Die Ausstellung, die der Hartware MedienKunstVerein 2006 konzipiert und in der 2.200 qm grossen PHOENIX Halle Dortmund unter dem Titel The Wonderful World of irational. Tools, Techniques and Events 1996-2006 gezeigt hat, wurde den Raeumlichkeiten des CCA Glasgow angepasst. Waehrend des Eroeffnungswochenendes vom 15.-17. Juni 2007 finden in Glasgow im Rahmen der Ausstellung zahlreiche Aktivitaeten von irational-Mitgliedern statt. irational Irational ist eine lose Gruppierung von sechs internationalen Netz- und MedienkuenstlerInnen, die sich um den 1996 von dem britischen Netzkuenstler Heath Bunting gegruendeten Server irational.org zusammengefunden haben und die fruehe Netzkunst Mitte der 1990er Jahre entscheidend mitgepraegt haben: Daniel Garcia Andújar/Technologies to the People (E), Rachel Baker (GB), Kayle Brandon (GB), Heath Bunting (GB), Minerva Cuevas/Mejor Vida Corporation (MEX) und Marcus Valentine (GB). Mit trockenem Humor und minimaler Aesthetik kommentierte irational den sich ab Mitte der 1990er Jahre entwickelnden Internet-Hype und konkurrierte mit der ab 1996/1997 hochschlagenden Kommerzialisierungs-Euphorie des Neuen Marktes durch die Entwicklung eigener Pseudo-Firmen. Kunst war im Netz unmittelbar, ohne den Bedarf und die Sicherheit eines Vermittlungsraumes bzw. einer Vermittlungsinstanz. Daher geriet irational in dieser Zeit auch oefters an humorlose Markenrechts-Anwaelte, die irational den Gebrauch von Firmennamen wie 7-11, American Express, Sainsburys und Tesco untersagen wollten. Diese Auseinandersetzungen, die in der Ausstellung ausfuehrlich dokumentiert werden, waren nur ein Vorspiel dessen, was sich heute im Rahmen von Urheberrecht, geistigem Eigentum, Copyright und Markenschutz abspielt. Heath Bunting ging 1997 weltweit als erster Netzkuenstler in den Ruhestand. Er beendete seine Arbeit im Netz und wandte sich nun wieder dem oeffentlichen Raum zu, zu dessen wichtigem Bestandteil das Internet ja heute geworden ist. Haben sich die Aktivitaeten von irational in der Netzphase' der Hinterfragung virtueller Grenzen gewidmet, so experimentieren die Mitglieder von irational heute mit der Befragung und Ueberwindung realraeumlicher - oekonomischer, politischer, sozialer - Grenzziehungen und schaffen mitunter recht unterhaltsame Abhilfe. IRATIONAL.ORG in Glasgow Noch nie zuvor sind die Arbeiten aus dem Umfeld von irational.org, die sich durch eine grosse Komplexitaet und Aktualitaet auszeichnen, in einer so umfassenden Ausstellung gezeigt worden. Ausdrueckliches Ziel der Ausstellung ist es, diese kuenstlerisch-aktivistischen Projekte erstmalig - ueber eine gross angelegte Ausstellung, verschiedene Aktivitaeten im Stadtraum von Glasgow, eine Podiumsdiskussion zum Thema Sport Art und einen umfangreichen Katalog - auch einem breiten Publikum zugaenglich zu machen. Wir danken dem Ministerpraesidenten des Landes NRW fuer die Unterstuetzung der Ausstellungsuebernahme in Glasgow. Wir freuen uns, dass mit dem CCA: The Centre for Contemporary Arts Glasgow eine wichtige Kunstinstitution die Ausstellung Irational.
