if all you want is printing hymns and such - which basically is similar to my 
own usecase - then I suggest having a look at Lilypond and Frescobaldi. That's 
what I use and for short hymns I'm faster entering them manually from scratch 
than importing from MIDI and then cleaning up.

basically create a normal text file with the editor of your choice (emacs, vim, 
nano, joe, ... - whatever works for you) and enter the two lines I had in my 
previous email. The line
   \version "2.18.2"
isn't strictly required but is considered good practise and highly recommended. 
The line
   { c' d' e' f' g' a ' b' c'' }
is the minimal code required to create a staff with a C major scale. Save this 
under whatever name you like, e.g. test.ly and then issue
   lilypond test.ly
on the commandline.

The rationale is testing if your lilypond installation basically works.

Lilypond should not segfault in the first place. I'm using it on a daily basis 
and it never segfaults on me. It occasionally crashes when I have really buggy 
scores. Even then it provides enough information as to where to start looking.

Hi David,

just looked at the code and there is no obvious error. The structure is 
"unusual" ín comparison to the structure of handwritten lilypond files but 
that's no problem. I could process it with the current LP dev version (2.19.65) 
w/o problems (don't have 2.18.2 installed because the dev version is very 
stable and has some features that I have come to depend on ;)

What happens if you enter
   'lilypond rosegarden_tmp_PE5468.ly'
on the commandline (assuming lilypond is in you path and the ly file in the 
current directory)?

If there are issues you should see them on the console. If there are no errors 
then it very likely is no LP problem.

could you also mail the created lilypond file rosegarden_tmp_PE7442.ly?

That would allow to have a look at the created LP code w/o haveing to bother RG 
to create it (I'm currently away from my Linux box...)

 I can repeat the problem with development code.  Two violins, a cello,
 and a piano.  Why the piano?  There's nothing obvious.

According to the OPs initial report this piano had been created and
saved as a second cello. It becoming a piano on (re-)opening the
arrangement is the problem :)

 I just unpacked an .rg file and notice that the instruments are defined
 in the very beginning with numbers.  Where can I find an index or formula
 relating the General-Midi Patch/Bank tree to the numbers rosegarden uses
 here?

 For example I noticed that an instrument I set up as a Violoncello
 (somehow unable to find just 'cello') has the # 2000.  What I want in
 this case is the cello defined as patch/bank 43/0. Some other numbers
 used: 2561 2307 2560 2304 2305 2306 2184 2436 1440 2189.

Have you actually tried to find this information somewhere on the net ?

My humble suggestion is this:
Use your favourite internet serach engine and enter general midi and
start reading. Once you've done that (and you'll find EXTENSIVE reading)
come back with your questions not yet answered.

I clearly differ. For me it has to do with rights, knowledge and being
in control, at least potentially.

Just an example:
Logic Studio is sold for 149 € in Apple's App store. Featurewise it is
several generations ahead of Rosegarden and in many aspects of Ardour as
well although Ardour delivers a couple of really nice things.

When you shell out your 149 € you have a full featured music production
and performing system with a bunch of very nice soft instruments. For
me it runs out of the box. No such thing as incompatible this and missing
that. Yes, I can reliably crash Logic. Yes, you need a Mac to run it (but
you can as well put Linux on that box - them Retina Displays are really
nice... ;)

To sum it up:
From a feature and time invested to get it working point of view I have
yet to find an open source product that is even remotely in the same
league as programs like Logic (and I assume all of Logic's commercial
competitors).

  And as an afterthought:
  If a guitar player wishes to play around with arbitrarily pitched
  strings
  he should transpose it himself. He'll learn something that way. Or even
  learn to transpose on the fly. Not that I'd consider that more useful
  than properly mastering the instrument in the first place.

 Part of the reason popular music is so popular is because people who
 don't spend a vast chunk of their lives mastering rigid rules can have
 fun making noise.  I find it a lot more relaxing than trying to do
 anything the correct way.

You think so ?

It is my impression that the truely successful popular music is mostly
written AND performed by musicians that have learned things the
correct way (as you put it).

This even goes for musicians that never had proper teaching but instead
spent hour by hour learning their instrument on their own for many years.
A couple of guitar heros fall into this category.

I also think some of the stuff that's created by music illiterates
the easy way might be commercially successful at least for a short
period of time but it is not lasting in any way.

I'm aware this is a requirement that might not fit with some other's.
