I have had similar thoughts myself. I am sure that he loves the program as
much (or more) as any of us do. It has to be hard on the guy.

Auburn basketball probed

09/04/03
CHARLES GOLDBERG
News staff writer

AUBURN - The NCAA has accused Auburn University of offering a high school basketball
star $50,000 and a car to sign with the school. Auburn officials, who acknowledged
Wednesday they have received an official letter of inquiry from the NCAA, are expected
to respond with a denial.

The NCAA letter accuses an assistant basketball coach of offering the money and a car
to Chadd Moore of Huntsville, according to Auburn officials familiar with the letter.
The NCAA based its charge on an interview with Clara Moore, Chadd Moore's mother,
according to Auburn officials familiar with the investigation.

The NCAA also charged Auburn with another major violation in the recruitment of Jackie
Butler of McComb, Miss. Details of that allegation could not be confirmed Wednesday.

The NCAA alleges that current Auburn assistant basketball coach Shannon Weaver and
former Auburn assistant basketball coach Mike Wilson made improper inducements to
prospective student-athletes. The News could not confirm the specific conduct of each
coach cited by the NCAA.

Auburn was not charged with a lack of institutional control, the most serious charge
possible.

Auburn officials are expected to respond that there is not enough evidence to show the
school committed any major violations and will argue that the assistant coach who
recruited Moore was not in the same city as Moore's mother on the date of the alleged
violation.

Weaver declined to comment Wednesday.

Efforts to reach Wilson were unsuccessful.

Head coach Cliff Ellis, who was not named in the letter and was not interviewed by the
NCAA, said he was ``very disappointed the NCAA chose to formally charge the
university. He also said he had the ``utmost faith and confidence in Weaver and
Wilson.

Auburn has a Nov. 5 deadline to respond to the charges. The NCAA enforcement staff
will then put the case before the infractions committee to make a formal ruling.

Auburn and the NCAA have been investigating allegations of improper benefits for 19
months. The NCAA sent Auburn a preliminary letter of inquiry in September 2002, saying
the investigation would be finished by Dec. 1 of that year. It was not formally
concluded until Auburn received the letter of inquiry this week.

Auburn's investigation began when self-described sports agent Mike Walker of McComb
accused Auburn of offering Butler improper benefits. The NCAA notified Auburn of its
investigation several days later.

The NCAA interviewed Butler on at least two occasions. The NCAA then began its
investigation of Moore, who never took an official recruiting visit to Auburn and
signed with the University of Cincinnati. Butler signed with Mississippi State.

A central figure in the recruitment of Moore and Butler is Huntsville Amateur Athletic
Union coach Mark Komara, who coached both players. Komara is mentioned in the letter
but the nature of his involvement could not be confirmed.

Current Auburn basketball players Brandon Robinson and Marco Killingsworth, as well as
assistant coach Charlton Young, were also interviewed by NCAA enforcement staff member
Jim Elworth, but were not named in the letter of inquiry, according to Auburn
officials familiar with the letter.

An Auburn official said there were no surprises in the letter and that all the
allegations had been thoroughly investigated by the school. Auburn officials have said
they worked closely with the NCAA in the investigation and have cooperated throughout.

``Given our program's efforts to comply with the NCAA rules at all times, I am
obviously very disappointed, Ellis said. ``Our program has cooperated fully with this
very thorough investigation and I have the utmost faith and confidence in our coaches,
both present and former.

``We will respond in the appropriate forum in the future and we hope to have a
favorable resolution of this matter as quickly as possible.

Justin Smiley loves the tradition of Alabama and Oklahoma, the championships, the
All-Americans - everything down to the understated crimson jerseys.

It's kind of like a throwback game, the Crimson Tide offensive lineman said. Their
uniforms and our uniforms kind of remind me of old-school, back-in-the-day football.
It's going to be a good battle.

It's going to make for an awesome environment.

The game Saturday night between two of college football's traditional heavyweights
isn't a total throwback. There's a No. 1 team playing at Bryant-Denny Stadium, and
it's not Alabama. That's a first.

Of course, the Tide hasn't been ranked No. 1 in the regular season since Nov. 1, 1980,
losing to Mississippi State 6-3. Alabama did win the 1992 national title with a 34-13
win over then-No. 1 Miami in the Sugar Bowl, and has won three of its four meetings
with top-ranked teams since 1977.

Bob Stoops has already restored the Sooners to national title contenders, claiming the
2000 championship. Alabama fans are hoping an unproven, 38-year-old Mike Shula can
have similar success - once NCAA sanctions are history.

It's probably one of the hardest places to play in the country, Oklahoma linebacker
Teddy Lehman said. It's a huge game, big as it gets. It's a huge confidence builder
if we win.

They've won the SEC hundreds of times, it seems like.

Alabama doesn't rule the Southeastern Conference like it used to and is ineligible for
the league title.

The Tide would love to provide a helpful reminder that there still is a dangerous
football program in Tuscaloosa, despite probation and a recent coaching turnstile with
Dennis Franchione and Mike Price exiting and Shula entering during a six-month span.

We know it's a chance to show everybody that we're still going to play football
here, Tide tailback Shaud Williams said.

It used to be hard to separate the two programs. Oklahoma has seven national
championships; Alabama has six.(snip)

Then the bastage needs to qualify the reference and say ...six AP titles. If they

I've been on their list almost since it's inception. And I've got a handful of Yahoo

get paranoid and kick everyone off the list they don't personally know. You'd be
surprised at how foolish most of those folks
are with their passwords. Well no, you probably wouldn't be surprised. Have you

I just came in from cutting the grass and turned the game on. For UAB
standards that crowd *may* be decent in size, but I'd say it's about 20%
of that 100,000 reported on that over board.

[RollTideFan] OU D vs UA O

2003-09-04 Thread Rick Mc.
The key match-up is Oklahoma's D-line verses the Bama O-line. It should
be a great battle all day. I have a *feeling* that the Bama O-line is
going to ready for the task. I'm *hoping* that OU comes into this game a
little overconfident with the #1 ranking and all the hype the media is
pouring on them this week. I expect Bama to win to win this thing.
Alabama is due to win a BIG game in BDS and Mike Shula seems to have the
right demeanor to handle the pressure of games like this. He sure did as
a player. Saturday can't get here soon enough!!!
