[RollTideFan] March Madness off the court
http://www.al.com/printer/printer.ssf?/base/sports/1079173226160430.xml March Madness off the court 03/13/04 Just when you thought there wasn't a sports story in the state that could be more incredible and gripping than Tommy Gallion's intrepid crusade against the NCAA, along comes a new potboiler from Auburn. This one threatens to not only steal the spotlight but rattle creaky skeletons out of the closet. The threat of a lawsuit this week against ESPN by Auburn trustees Bobby Lowder and Jack Miller is only a part of a story that is currently simmering but close to exploding, one that could be sordid, salacious and shocking. The betting line here is the ESPN lawsuit won't be the only one threatened before the Ides of March. It's difficult to say what will happen with ESPN and the two Auburn trustees, who correctly demanded a retraction of an outlandish commentary by John Saunders that gave the impression -- at least to some -- that a fire at the Tuskegee newspaper office of muckraking newspaperman Paul Davis may have been the work of Auburn trustees. However, what has everyone on tenterhooks is an expected two-part series shortly from The Sporting News (contrary to popular belief, it is still in business) that is expected to blow the lid off past recruiting practices at Auburn and place much of the blame on Lowder. Yes, that is the same magazine that picked Auburn to win the national championship last summer. Perhaps this is its way of settling old scores by dragging up stories from 12 years ago. Speaking of settling old scores, that's where Terry Bowden enters this slimy picture. First of all, Saunders is not only a close friend of the former Auburn coach but his Saturday afternoon partner on ABC's college football show. While Saunders was quoting Davis and making a correlation between the KKK and the Auburn Board of Trustees, he might have admitted his bald-faced bias in the case. Of course, that may have ruined a good story. However, according to people who have seen a rough draft of The Sporting News article, there are Bowden fingerprints all over the scorching expose, although the former coach officially declined to be quoted. The thrust of the article is believed to emanate from the well-traveled (and much publicized) secret tapes of Bowden. Lowder is expected to be excoriated, as are several other prominent trustees. Also, it is believed other familiar names could resurface, such as former assistant coaches Rodney Garner and Wayne Hall, both of whom were forced out by Bowden. What's interesting, according to people who are familiar with the story, are that the alleged rules violations occurred not only under Pat Dye but continued under Bowden, even though Bowden has signed nine affidavits claiming he was unaware of any violations on his watch. It's worth noting that Garner, who is now at Georgia, vowed to settle old scores with Bowden if he kept running his mouth (which apparently is the case). So the battle lines are being drawn ... again. The name-calling and tattling is under way. Where it goes is unclear. However, it won't be pretty, you can't bet on that. And to think many of us believed March Madness was contained only to the basketball court. (Paul Finebaum's column appears Tuesdays and Saturdays in the Mobile Register. [RollTideFan] Capturing hearts with a quick smile, open arms
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/localnews/columnists/sblow/stories/031404dnmetblow.13ad2.html Capturing hearts with a quick smile, open arms 12:25 PM CST on Saturday, March 13, 2004 By STEVE BLOW / The Dallas Morning News For a good while now, a fellow at church has wanted me to meet a special friend of his. One morning last week, the opportunity finally came. Bill Hammett and I headed northeast, up beyond Paris, to a pretty stretch of country near the community of Novice. And there I met John Mark Stallings known to legions of friends as Johnny. It didn't take long for me to understand why Bill was so eager for me to meet this guy. Johnny's dad, Gene Stallings, may be famous as a winning football coach. But Johnny is the champion of winning personalities. You may know his story. He has been an inspiration to so many. Johnny was born with Down syndrome. He's the middle of five children, the Stallingses' only son. What may surprise you is that Johnny is no kid anymore. He's 41 years old. When he was born, they told us he would never make 3. When he was 3, they said he would never make 11, Gene said. He will be 42 on June 11. But Johnny's health is fragile these days. It's part of what makes Bill eager to visit when he can and to introduce others to Johnny while he can. Bill worked for years as a photographer for the NFL. That's how he got to know Gene and Johnny back when Gene was an assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys. For those who don't read the sports section, Gene is one of the most respected coaches around. After head-coaching stints at Texas AM and for the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals, he led the University of Alabama to a national championship. And Johnny was always right there with him, a father-son duo known far and wide. Johnny's mom, Ruth Ann, joked: I tell my girls it will be their mission in life to let the world know that Johnny had a mother. He did not just spring from his father. Though it had been a year since Johnny saw Bill, he knew him immediately. Hi, Bill! he said. Names are Johnny's gift. He can instantly recall the name of almost everyone he has ever met. We had 250 people here from all over the country for Johnny's 40th birthday, Ruth Ann said, and I'll bet Johnny knew the name of every one of them. Johnny took a seat on the couch right next to Bill and put his arm around him like a long lost pal. I'm Bill's friend, he said. Then, ever considerate, he pointed at me and said, I'm Steve's friend. It is just that purity of spirit that has made Johnny so beloved. He's got unconditional love, Gene said later, over lunch at the Novice community store. A lot of people will do things for you so you'll do things for them. That never enters his mind. He loves people for who they are. It's a hard thing for grown children to see their parents enter the twilight years of life. Imagine how much harder it is for parents to see a child enter that stage. I'm not taking it very well, Gene said. Neither one of us are. Johnny looks pale and drawn now. His little old heart is just playing out, Gene said. In fact, Johnny had been released from the hospital just a few days earlier after another bad spell. Gene and Ruth Ann bought their beautiful farm north of Paris some 30 years ago. It was always the family's home base, no matter where the coaching life led. As much as Johnny loved being on the sidelines with his dad, the farm has been his first love. In an incredible act of courage, Gene has already built a small, iron-fenced cemetery on a high spot of ground on the farm. I built it for him, Gene said quietly, nodding his head toward Johnny. There's something he has said over and over through the years. It will be on his tombstone 'I love the farm on a pretty day.' There have been a lot of pretty days on that farm. And Johnny Stallings has taught a lot of people about love. E-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ RollTideFan - The University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List Welcome to RollTideFan! Wear a cup!
