[RollTideFan] Todd Bates ready for his final season

Todd Bates ready for his final season

By Tommy Deas
Sports Writer
March 14, 2004
Email this story.

TUSCALOOSA | Todd Bates was looking for an edge, and he turned to a
bodybuilding product to get it.

The senior defensive end from Heflin was putting on the wrong kind of
weight. His position requires strength and speed, so he couldnt afford
to carry any extra pounds around his middle. He purchased a product
called Rip Fuel, but the price was higher than he expected.

It cost him a year of eligibility.

Bates had to sit out last season after testing positive for ephedra, an
herbal substance banned by the NCAA in 1997. The federal government
moved last year to ban over-the-counter sale of ephedra-based products.

Bates said he had barely heard of ephedra until last year, and he found
out about it the hard way.

I never really heard the word until I got tested for it, he said. I
think they might have told us about it in a meeting when I was a
freshman. I guess I wasnt paying enough attention.

Rip Fuel wasnt helping me strength-wise. It would help me with reps,
just give me more endurance in the weight room. It rips you up and gives
you more wind.

Bates didnt get to play a single down last year. Now hes back for his
senior season, and a lot wiser for his mistake.

Its a good thing they took [ephedra] out of every product, he said.
It was a bad situation for me.

Bates arrived at Alabama as a 6-foot-4, 240-pound linebacker, but was
soon moved into a defensive end slot that required him to gain weight
and add strength.

He was the only high school signee in the 2001 recruiting class to play
as a true freshman. He played in nine games and earned one start, making
23 tackles and recovering two fumbles.

As a sophomore, Bates played in every game and made 28 tackles after
missing most of spring practice while rehabilitating from shoulder surgery.

He was determined to make an impact last year, and thats what led him
to shop for something to help him. He says he never read the label, and
had no idea his actions would cost him a season.

Ephedra has been linked to more than 150 deaths and hundreds of heart
attacks and strokes. Following the death last year of Baltimore Orioles
pitcher Steve Belcher, which was linked to an ephedra-based product, the
Bush administration moved to ban sale of the substances. The herb
accelerates the heart rate, allowing the user to lose weight and work
out longer. In doing so, it increases the strain on the heart.

Phillip Bishop, a UA professor of kinesiology who specializes in
exercise science, is familiar with studies on the substance.

Its a stimulant, he said. There is some evidence that it is
effective in weight loss, but there is considerable evidence that it is
very dangerous.

Ephedra-based products were popular with bodybuilders because they
served to increase workout endurance and enhance the users physique.

The big issue in bodybuilding is not only body mass, Bishop said.
Its one thing to have muscles, but if its covered with fat, the
judges cant see it.

Bates wanted that kind of body, and he still does. Hes just trying to
get it in a different way. Now playing at 253 pounds, he advocates doing
things without the use any of performance-enhancing substances.

Just not eating and lifting, he said. I was trying to get bigger but
keep slim and trim.

Its better this way. You know youre doing it the right way and not
putting anything bad in your body.

I wouldnt advise anybody to use anything. This is the way to do it.

Bates is also taking every possible precaution to make sure he never
fails another drug test.

Before I take any medicine for a cold or something, I check, he said.
You never know what might be in it.

Bates started out a little slow in spring practice, but has quickly
rounded into form. He was promoted to a starting position last week, and
has impressed his coaches with how he has handled his misfortune.

I think he really missed it last year, said Alabama defensive
coordinator Joe Kines. Ive never, in all my years, seen a guy sit out
and get something out of it like he did. I think the best thing about it
was his attitude.

Kines also likes the way Bates plays the game.

Hes really good, aggressive, the coach said. Hes the epitome of
second effort. If he makes a mistake, he makes it at full speed.

Head coach Mike Shula has been impressed with Bates progress, but also
with how he interacts with the team.

Since day one, hes been a leader, Shula said. Hes in better shape
now than he was a month ago, too.

Hes going to be real solid for us, because hes going to be in the
right place at the right time to make plays.

Bates got to practice last season, but he didnt practice with his
teammates so much as against them. Bates was assigned to the scout team,
where he went up against first- and second-team offensive players every day.

Somewhere along the way, the Federal Courts and the Supreme Court have

They have a nice record and ranking, but I still don't buy it. They have
beaten a bunch of weak teams in the MVC and they only average ~73 points per
game. Bama should be able to handle these guys and hold them way below their
scoring average. All we gotta do is shut down Darren Brooks. Pett should be
able to do that.

[RollTideFan] Bama Seattle-Bound

2004-03-14 Thread Rick McMahan
http://www.rolltide.com/Mens%20Basketball/10110.asp

TUSCALOOSA For the 17th time in school history and the third year in a
row, the University of Alabama mens basketball team will participate in
the NCAA Championships.

The Crimson Tide, 17-12 overall and an eight seed in the NCAA
tournament, will play Southern Illinois, 25-4 and a nine seed, on
Thursday, March 18th in Seattle, Washington, at KeyArena. Game times
have not yet been released. The winner will play the winner between No.
1 seed Stanford and 16 seed Texas-San Antonio in the second round to
determine which team advances to the regional in Phoenix, Arizona.

Im really proud for our players and I think were a team that
certainly played our way into the tournament. I think everybody has, but
our last month of the season Im really proud of what they were able to
accomplish and what they were able to do, said Alabama head coach Mark
Gottfried. Like all the teams in the tournament, you just want an
opportunity to play. Thats kind of where we are, dont really care too
much where it is and who it is, but we just want to play and Im sure
SIU feels the same way as the other 63 teams feel. You just want to get
in there and have a chance, and thats what we have.

The Tide has played Southern Illinois once previously, in November of
1996 at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. Alabama won
that second round game 79-58 en route to the Classicss tournament
championship.

Alabama advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2002 and 2003, making this
the first time since 1991 that Alabama has advanced three consecutive
seasons. Alabama made the tournament in 1989, 1990 and 1991, the last
time it went to three in a row. Alabamas selection to the 2004 field
marks the 17th postseason trip for the Tide since its 1975 team was
selected to the West Regional. Alabamas best finish in the tournament
to date has been the Sweet 16 which it has advanced to seven times, in
1976, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990 and 1991.

Gottfried was the starting guard on Alabamas 1985, 1986 and 1987 Sweet
16 teams. In his sixth seasons as Alabamas head coach, he has now
advanced Alabama to postseason play five times, to the NIT tournament in
1999 and 2001 and to the NCAA tournament in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Ticket information will be released on Monday for Alabama fans planning
to follow the Tide to Seattle.

University of Alabama Head Coach Mark Gottfried:

On making the tournament field:

Im really proud for our players and I think were a team that
certainly played our way into the tournament. I think everybody has, but
our last month of the season Im really proud of what they were able to
accomplish and what they were able to do. Like all the teams in the
tournament, you just want an opportunity to play. Thats kind of where
we are, dont really care too much where it is and who it is, but we
just want to play and Im sure SIU feels the same way as the other 63
teams feel. You just want to get in there and have a chance, and thats
what we have.

On whether he was nervous as Alabamas name was not called until last
regional bracket on CBS Selection Show:

A little bit only because of 2001, sitting in there and not going, that
was such a hard thing. But I felt pretty confident that we were in. I
watched and studied this thing the last 24 hours a little bit closer
than I had and I felt like the teams where we may be seeded with, I saw
who was already in and who was left and I felt pretty confident that we
would be in that seven, ten or eight, nine game. I thought thats
probably where we were going to be. I wasnt as nervous about not
getting in maybe this year as I was a few years back.

On any problems playing across the country may create:

I dont think it creates too many. Teams are flying all over the
country whether its a two hour flight or a four hour flight, big deal.
Well travel on Tuesday. We have a practice time on Wednesday that you
cant miss, so you dont want to travel that day in case you have any
problems and miss your times or whatever and miss your times. Those
Thursday games, I think most everybody is getting on a plane or bus and
traveling on Tuesday, and well do the same thing and get out there and
play.

On playing preparation for Southern Illinois:

Weve got a video library up here. We tape games all year long. Im
sure we dont have as many on SIU (as wed have for an SEC team), but
well have some and well be able to prepare. Youve got to remember
that every team in the tournament has earned the right to be there
regardless of what conference they come from. Sometimes we may think a
Michigan State or a Wake Forest is better than a Western Michigan or a
team maybe from not a major conference, and thats not necessarily true
at all. Our players will understand that. Our players here remember a
couple of years ago how good Kent State was. They were awfully good.
People forget that year they beat Alabama, Pittsburgh
