[RollTideFan] Focus on the Catamounts
Shula Worried about Possible Letdown, Not Weather By Mitch Dobbs Date: Sep 14, 2004 With Alabama’s first road game against better-than-expected Arkansas just over the horizon, and an ominous hurricane threatening the Heart of Dixie, Mike Shula faces a tough task in keeping his squad focused on Division I-AA Western Carolina. The Catamounts (2-0) and the Tide (2-0, 1-0 SEC) are scheduled to square off at 6:07 p.m. in Bryant-Denny Stadium with only Pay-Per-View television coverage, but that schedule is at the mercy of Hurricane Ivan. Power outages and wind damage are a possibility for the Tuscaloosa area, and Alabama Director of Athletics Mal Moore said that he will meet with police and Alabama Power representatives Friday morning, after the storm is expected to have passed, to assess the situation. Moore indicated that both schools would make every effort to play the game. Keeping his team’s mind off hurricanes and on Catamounts is paramount for Shula this week. “Our focus has been real good so far this year and we need to continue that more than anything else this week,” Shula said addressing media members at his weekly press conference Tuesday. “Two games into our schedule a few guys are nicked up, not anything serious where they will miss practice, but just up to the point they could take their minds off it.” Western Carolina is undefeated on the young season, and have outscored opponents West Virginia State and Nicholls State a combined 105-14. “I’ve never played against a football team that two weeks earlier scored 77 points,” Shula said. “Defensively, they are a lot like Ole Miss, style-wise. They are going to move around and have good speed.” Shula is serious about not letting this game slip up on his squad. When asked a question about the chances of several lesser-used players getting a lot of action against Western Carolina, he wouldn’t consider the topic. “We won two of three games to start out last year and we got the same question before the Northern Illinois game,” he said in response. “You go back to last year and we played a team that we were favored to beat that we didn’t know a lot about and we got beat. We’ve got to make sure not to do anything like we did last year.” Shula has been keeping up with the weather, though, saying he thinks his squad will be able to get in two good days of practice, Tuesday and Wednesday. However, he said, “We’ve got to be flexible if the circumstances don’t allow that.” Shula has as bit of experience dealing with hurricanes and football at the same time. He was an assistant with the Dolphins in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew devastated the Miami area. The Dolphins rescheduled its season-opener to what was its bye week. “A lot of us stayed at the stadium because there were other places that didn’t have power,” Shula said. “Once it was over, I can remember hauling 60,000 pounds of ice down to a mall in Homestead that had been wiped out. They were delivering all the supplies. “It kind of throws you a little bit. All of a sudden, it all becomes real. You’re sitting there worrying about your job or what’s going to happen, the schedule, having to change things, and you go out there and see all these homes that have been ruined and people looking for anything. Again, it keeps everything in perspective. “You just hope and pray that this one, where ever it hits, it hopefully causes minimal damage. It’s scary.” Shula said he doesn’t plan to go into detailed weather scenarios with his players. “We’ll talk about ‘Hey, let’s worry about today’ and let the coaches make any announcements that we need to make. As coaches, it’s hard for us to think more than one day ahead.” Shula said that he might not be done taking the redshirts off of players this year, and that game three wouldn’t be a cutoff point to make that decision. Tyrone Prothro took was first used in game five versus Arkansas a year ago. “More so than last year we’re going to give guys the opportunity to play,” Shula said. Shula said that Antoine Caldwell, who had surgery on his foot during fall camp, would be doing more in practice this week. Shula mentioned Caldwell specifically as one player who might vie for playing time this season if he comes back healthy. Elsewhere on the injury front, Shula said Chris James will likely place this week after injuring his shoulder during the Ole Miss game, and that the status of Antonio Carter hasn’t changed in the past weeks. Shula said that he was happy with the play of the less-experienced right side of his offensive line. He said that Kyle Tatum played better and was better on pass protection in week two and that Danny Martz has been consistently good in both the Tide’s games this season. He said the work Von Ewing to improve his body during the off-season helped him get significant playing time against Ole Miss spelling Tatum. “We wouldn’t put him in if we didn’t feel comfortable with him,” Shula sai
[RollTideFan] House panel tackles NCAA's sanctions
* House panel tackles NCAA's sanctions * *By JEFFREY McMURRAY * *The Associated Press* *9/14/2004, 5:12 p.m. CT* WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jeremy Bloom told a congressional panel Tuesday that the NCAA cut his college football career short without giving him a fair chance to argue his case. Bloom, who would have been a junior receiver at Colorado this year, lost his college eligibility because of endorsement deals he received as a professional skier. He is a world champion in freestyle moguls and a 2002 Olympian. Officials of the NCAA called Bloom's endorsements willful violations of the rules, unlike similar cases that were deemed misunderstandings. They insisted Bloom had a fair hearing and every opportunity to state his side. "In the NCAA, the judgment of the dispute is formed exclusively within the organization by their own members," Bloom told the House Judiciary Committee's panel on the Constitution. "They're the judge, the jury and the executioner." Bloom's two-year fight with the NCAA came to an end two weeks before the regular season, when an NCAA panel turned down his final appeal to play football. NCAA rules allow athletes to accept salaries as professionals in other sports, but they aren't allowed to accept money from sponsors. NCAA spokesman Jason Christianson said Bloom got 10 minutes to make his final case during the appeals process. Before that, he was able to submit arguments in writing from various witnesses without limits. Jo Potuto, vice chairwoman of the NCAA's Committee on Infractions, said the organizing body for college sports gives student athletes due process as required by the Constitution. This is done, she said, despite court decisions that have rejected arguments that the NCAA is a "state actor" and therefore subject to these requirements. "An even playing field means more than an evenhanded and consistent application of the rules on the field," Potuto said. "It also means an evenhanded and consistent application of the rules off the field." Although Bloom's case got the most attention at the hearing, the larger question of whether Congress should tell the NCAA how it should investigate and adjudicate violations of association rules struck a personal chord with many members of the House panel. Republican Rep. Spencer Bachus called the hearing after the NCAA imposed sanctions against two major college athletic programs in his home state of Alabama. More than two years ago, the University of Alabama's football program was placed on probation, banned from bowl games and stripped of scholarships for recruiting violations. This year, Auburn's basketball program was slapped with probation and a loss of a scholarship amid charges that an AAU coach improperly acted as a representative of the university by arranging to wire money to one high school prospect and get a car for another. Bachus didn't bring up the Alabama or Auburn cases during questioning, but he accused the NCAA of trying to "poison the atmosphere" by citing the cases on the NCAA Web site in an article about the hearing. Bachus asked Potuto why hearings by the NCAA's infractions committee are closed to the public. Potuto said a more open process would subject the schools and athletes under investigation to additional scorn and pressure through the media. David Ridpath, an assistant professor of sport administration at Mississippi State, said an even larger potential problem is a perceived conflict of interest during NCAA investigations. The NCAA is biased against a school's appeal because the organization made the charge the school is appealing, he said. Ridpath filed a lawsuit alleging he was fired as an adjunct professor at Marshall in an effort to silence him after he uncovered an improper employment scheme for student athletes at the school. Member institutions either are afraid of the NCAA or too close to it, he said, creating a cartel-like process that seldom results in just decisions and often is used to "settle scores or cash chips in." "It's an insider's game, just like the old fox guarding the hen house," Ridpath said. "College athletics is a very seductive business that has forced good people to do bad things and bad people to do worse things." •__ On the Net: NCAA: http://www.ncaa.org Copyright 2004 The Associated Press. [RollTideFan] Tide officials keeping wary eye on Ivan
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040913/NEWS/40913002/1011 Tide officials keeping wary eye on Ivan By Cecil Hurt Sports Editor September 13, 2004 Email this story. TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama director of athletics Mal Moore said Monday night that UA officials are "keeping a close eye" on Hurricane Ivan and its possible effect on Saturdays Crimson Tide game against Western Carolina. There have currently been no changes in the scheduled 6 p.m. kickoff time for Saturdays game. "We are watching (the hurricane) very closely," Moore said. "We hope that it steers away from us and it wont be a factor, but we are preparing for all contingencies." Moore said that he spoke several times on Monday with officials at Western Carolina, which is located in Cullowhee, N.C., a town in the extreme western portion of that state. The storm track, which could bring Ivan near Tuscaloosa on Thursday, could also affect the travel plans for WCU. "They are planning to come by bus on Friday," Moore said. "We want to make sure they get here safely. We will have (Alabama Highway Patrol) escorts for them as soon as they reach the state line." Moore said the major concern, aside from the safe transport of the WCU team, was having adequate electrical power at Bryant-Denny Stadium. "Thats the main thing, having power for a night game," Moore said. "Thats our biggest concern. We could also have a large amount of rain, but the field has a pumping system than can remove a lot of water." Alabama most recent weather-related postponement came on September 17, 1988, when Hurricane Gilbert prevented the team from traveling to College Station, Tex., for a game with Texas A&M. That game was rescheduled and played on December 1, 1988. The Crimson Tides Sept. 15, 2001 contest against Southern Miss was delayed due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and was also pushed back into December. That sounds like fun. I wore a shirt with upside down Longhorns on it into Austin last year for the Texas game. It got me some dirty looks, but I told them that they needed to get over it. In the SEC that's just part of the game. I think if you return the trash talk you get a little more respect. Even at Bama trash talk is part of itjust makes it more fun in my opinion.
