[RollTideFan] Guillon: Rumors are not founded
http://www.al.com/sports/huntsvilletimes/index.ssf?/base/sports/1099563409183880.xml Guillon: Rumors are not founded Injured Alabama QB tries to ignore Web, radio chatter Thursday, November 04, 2004 By PAUL GATTIS Times Sports Staff [EMAIL PROTECTED] TUSCALOOSA - He seems to be the malcontent of the year, the quarterback with the fake injury and the bad attitude. If it can be said about a football player, it's been said this season about Alabama backup quarterback Marc Guillon. If you read the gossip on the Internet or listen to the zealots call into the radio talk shows, you can hear anything and everything: Guillon's injury is just an excuse to hide on the sideline after two shaky games as Brodie Croyle's replacement. ?uillon hasn't played in the last three games because he can't get along with the coaching staff. ?uillon even had to deny speculation in a state newspaper last week that he might look to transfer after the season. But to talk to Guillon or coach Mike Shula, reality appears to be that Guillon has a back injury - which has been diagnosed as two bulging discs and a partially torn muscle in his lower back - and that's why he hasn't played since the Oct. 2 loss to South Carolina. I know a place like this where football is everything, I know people are going to talk, Guillon said. They are going to come up with every scenario that they can. That's just what people do. They are huge football fans and they are always going to have their own opinion. I realize that and there's nothing I can do about it. They're going to say what they're going to say and I can't do anything about it. All I can do is ignore it. So is the injury legitimate? Guillon said he's received two shots in his back recently to ease the pain, which he earlier described as a stabbing pain when he threw the ball. Do you bicker with the coaching staff? No, not at all, Guillon said, almost laughing. There's no bickering at all. There's intense coaching out there, yeah. Bickering? No. Are you going to transfer after the season? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard, he said. That would eliminate another year of my eligibility, which would leave none pretty much. Shula said he was unaware of the gossip involving Guillon until asked about it following Wednesday's rainy practice. No, that's the first I've heard of it, Shula said. We have an open line of communication and it's been fine. He and (quarterbacks coach Dave Rader) are real close, too. I think it's been frustrating for him. Unfortunately when you get hurt and you don't get better quick, then it's easy for frustration to set in. He knows that if he has any questions, he can come into my office. That's the way it is with all of our players. Indeed, frustration is a prime emotion these days for Guillon. A sophomore from Chico, Calif., who transferred from Miami before last season, Guillon started against Arkansas and South Carolina after Croyle's injury. But he was benched in the third quarter against the Gamecocks after throwing two interceptions and the Tide lost both games. Then the next week, Shula revealed that Guillon was having back problems and he hasn't played since. It's been tough, Guillon said. It was frustrating, real frustrating. To get an opportunity like this and something happens like this to my back. I was doing everything I could for a while and we had to resort to getting some shots in my back. Overall, it's just real, real frustrating. I don't think I've ever been this frustrated in my life. And that's just because of the injury. As for everything else ... It is what it is and that's what it is, Guillon said. But (fans) are always going to have their opinions and I realize that and respect that. But it is kind of annoying. Copyright 2004 al.com. [RollTideFan] Bama must adjust...
Bama must adjust offensive schemes By Tim Gayle Montgomery Advertiser http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/NEWSV5/storyV5bamafoo4o.htm TUSCALOOSA -- Two of Alabama's top three receivers are now standing on the sideline, nursing season-ending knee injuries. They happen to be running backs as well, an indication of their versatility and what their loss means to Alabama. Former starting tailback Ray Hudson, the second-leading rusher in the Southeastern Conference, was joined on the injured list two weeks ago by Tim Castille, the starting fullback. So not only did Alabama lose two of its top playmakers, it also lost it's big-back look that featured Castille and backup fullback Le'Ron McClain. But Alabama players insist there will be no dropoff in production. You really don't lose anything, starting tailback Kenneth Darby said. I'm going to have to do more of what they were doing. I'm going to have to catch the ball more out of the backfield and be in there for the big-back set. The roles are just changing. They're not taking anything out. They're going to keep everything the same. It's hard to argue with success. Alabama's offense is the leading rushing attack in the Southeastern Conference. But it's almost impossible to expect the Crimson Tide to have the same success without Castille, who stepped into the role vacated by Hudson as a quality receiver out of the backfield and also split time between tailback and fullback. I think our offense will look similar, running backs coach Sparky Woods said. You fit it to your personnel. We lost two great players in Tim Castille, a halfback and a fullback, so we have to make some adjustments. The biggest part of it is the younger guys have to step up and play that role. We can't just change offenses. Alabama head coach Mike Shula suggested the role can be filled by using McClain as a fullback and in a single-back offensive alignment, and that tight ends can fill the role of blockers in some passing situations. Le'Ron has really improved since last year with his blocking, with his catching, and he's in much better shape, Shula said, and he understands what we're doing a lot more than he ever did at any point before. (Tight ends) Clint Johnston and David Cavan, we've used them this year at times with a single back. We could possibly do some of that. The logical choice would be Johnston, the most versatile of the tight ends, but the junior from Wetumpka has been limited in practice this week with a concussion. I still don't know if I'll play, he said after Wednesday's practice. They said it needs time. Offensive coordinator Dave Rader said practice this week has focused on Castille's backups, McClain and Josh Smith. So far, they've responded with a resounding affirmation, he said. They're two tough young men, strong-minded and smart. We have every bit of confidence that they'll be able to fulfill the role. We, for sure, don't have the big backfield. That's a big change for us. That burden will go on 'KD' (Darby). He's got to be a big back now. That's an immediate change we'll see. Other than that, we've all been running the same plays most of the fall and spring and throughout preseason camp. You're going to have more reps now, but they're going to be the same plays. McClain, the 244-pound sophomore who went from being an all-state tailback at Tuscaloosa County High to a seldom-used fullback at Alabama, likes the idea of being featured in a one-back offense. I would be real comfortable, McClain said. Every day, before we come out to practice, I'm working on my one-back set with my stance and everything. If my opportunity comes, I'm going to take it. It's doubtful the Crimson Tide offense can line up and run the ball the way it has through the first eight games of the season. Quarterback Spencer Pennington, who has struggled since moving up from third team a month ago because of injuries, will have to improve his accuracy. He picks things up quicker, Shula said. That's probably the biggest thing as far as when you're talking to him about certain things and certain reads and progressions. His awareness of blitzes, things like that, are all things that he's progressed with. In practice his accuracy is improved. We've missed some throws that we felt like if we would have made them we would have had taken advantage of some opportunities, and that's where we have to get better. Pennington predicted Alabama's offense will continue to maintain its level of success without Castille. We're definitely going to miss Tim and we've missed Ray, he said. But Le'Ron can run out of the backfield, he can make catches and he can run after the catch. We're very excited to have him step in there and fill that position. I don't feel we're going to lose that factor of our offense, but I really don't know. We haven't played a game without Tim. I guess we'll have to see this Saturday what goes on. Sloppy work: Shula said he
[RollTideFan] SEC Notebook...
SEC THIS WEEK IN THE SEC November 4, 2004 http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041104/SPORTS0201/411040340/1026/SPORTS02 The Guilbeau Poll 1. AUBURN (9-0, 6-0) -- In the end, Auburn's schedule, including the SEC Championship Game, will prove tougher than either USC's or Oklahoma's, but the Tigers sadly might not get to play for it all in the Orange Bowl. And that will be a crime. Last week: Won 35-14 at Ole Miss for its eighth win in nine games by three touchdowns or more. Last ranking: 1st. 2. TENNESSEE (7-1, 5-1) -- The Vols host Notre Dame this week in an interesting game, but the 5-3 Fighting Irish are probably only the fifth-best team on the Vols' schedule behind Auburn, Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Last week: Won 43-29 at South Carollina. Last ranking: 2nd. 3. GEORGIA (7-1, 5-1) -- At last, Ron Zook was fired and Georgia beat Florida for the first time since 1997 and for just the second time in 15 years. Last week: Beat Florida 31-24. Last ranking: 3rd. 4. LSU (6-2, 3-2) -- The only team that has stayed on the field with Auburn this season and easily could have won that game. Last week: Beat Vanderbilt 24-7. Last ranking: 4th. 5. ARKANSAS (3-4, 1-3) -- This team has the worst record in the West at 1-3, which means the West is as good as some conferences. The Hogs also have one of the toughest schedules in the country. Last week: Open after losing 20-14 to Georgia, its fourth ranked opponent of the season with another to go. Last ranking: 5th. 6. ALABAMA (5-3, 2-3) -- The Tide keeps losing players to injuries but keeps hanging tough and is hungry for its first bowl since the Independence Bowl in 2001. First quarterback Brodie Croyle, then tailback Ray Hudson and now fullback Tim Castille are all out for the year with knee injuries. Last week: Open after narrowly losing 17-13 at Tennessee. Last ranking: 6th. 7. OLE MISS (3-5, 2-3) -- The Rebels won't be going to a bowl, but they could mess up LSU's or Arkansas' season in the coming weeks. Last week: Lost 35-14 to Auburn. Last ranking: 7th. 8. FLORIDA (4-4, 2-4) -- Now you know why so many SEC coaches were Washington Redskins fans the last couple of years. Will Steve Spurrier be back? Last week: Lost 31-24 to Georgia. Last ranking: 8th. 9. SOUTH CAROLINA (5-3, 3-3) -- The Gamecocks had Tennessee on the ropes. Games like that are why this league is the best in the country most years. Last week: Lost 43-29 to Tennessee. Last ranking: 9th. 10. VANDERBILT (2-6, 1-4) -- The Commodores' 83-yard touchdown drive at LSU Saturday was the longest against the No. 5 defense in the nation. Last week: Lost 24-7 at LSU. Last ranking: 10th. 11. MISSISSIPPI STATE (3-5, 2-3) -- The Bulldogs' win over Kentucky last week may have fired its second coach in two weeks. Last week: Won its second in a row with 22-7 win over Kentucky. Last ranking: 12th. 12. KENTUCKY (1-7, 0-5) -- Coach Rich Brooks refuses to concede, but then Dan Rather still hasn't given up on the presidential race. Evidently, there are still provisional votes to be counted from the moon. Last week: Lost 22-7 at Mississippi State. Last ranking: 11th. Saturday TV (USA Today Rankings) CAN'T WAIT: Notre Dame at No. 11 Tennessee, 2:30 p.m., CBS. This is always an interesting game, but it may be interrupted by Dan Rather finally conceding the election before he goes off to watch old West Wing reruns. CAN'T WATCH: Dan Rather and Florida at Vanderbilt, 1 p.m. OTHER TV GAMES: Arkansas at South Carolina, 11:30 a.m., Jefferson Pilot/ESPN GamePlan. No. 5 Georgia at Kentucky, 11:30 a.m., Jefferson Pilot/ESPN GamePlan. Mississippi State at Alabama, 5:30 p.m., ESPN2. Alabama is at LSU next week on ESPN at 6:45 p.m. Notebook NATIONAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAY: The more things change, the more things stay the same? On Nov. 6, 1869, Rutgers beat Princeton 6-4 in New Brunswick, N.J., in what is believed to be the first college football game. The Cotton Bowl, which could host LSU and Texas in its Jan. 1 game, is trying to make Nov. 6 an annual holiday in honor of that game. A coincidence was just missed. On Oct. 23, 2004, Iowa beat Penn State 6-4. No, Penn State coach Joe Paterno did not coach in both games. BAMA D OF OLD?: Some say Alabama's 1992 defense that carried it to a 13-0 record and the national championship was one of the best ever. The Crimson Tide may have one of a similar mold this season. The Tide leads the nation in total defense (221.8 yards allowed a game), pass defense (106.6 yards allowed per game) and pass defense efficiency (83.3 rating). Alabama, which is second to Auburn in scoring defense (13.5 to 9.7) and ninth nationally, will be in Tiger Stadium a week from Saturday. Piece by piece, it's a really unselfish defense, free safety Roman Harper said. That's why you don't see one person with eight billion tackles like you did last year. People were trying to do too much. This year, you just do your job. You might
