Alabama Football 2004: Best and Worst
Sunday, January 02, 2005
-- Offensive play of the year: Toss sweep left at Arkansas. Ray Hudson
followed an escort around the end, featuring key blocks from Wesley
Britt, Evan Mathis and Le'Ron McClain, and jetted through the opening
for an untouched 63-yard score, the Tide's longest offensive touchdown
of the season. That play nudged out Brodie Croyle's perfectly fired
57-yard touchdown strike to Keith Brown in the opener, a symbol of what
might have been for the Alabama offense.

-- Defensive play of the year: Week two, Alabama leading Ole Miss 7-0 in
the first quarter, Roman Harper came through clean on a third-quarter
blitz. The safety plundered quarterback Micheal Spurlock with a sack and
a strip, with Alabama recovering the fumble and scoring two plays later
to put an early clamp on the Rebels.

-- Special teams play of the year: Alabama was clinging to a 17-14 lead
at Kentucky and was forced into a punting situation in the third quarter
when Bo Freelend pulled down a punt that would have been blocked and ran
24 yards for a critical first down that reversed the momentum and
spurred a runaway Tide victory.

-- Best coaching move of the year: It's a tie, with one move on each
side of the ball. The decision to utilize Freddie Roach at three
positions paid solid dividends. Offensively, trying Tyrone Prothro at
quarterback in week nine at Mississippi State -- to a rousing success --
proved the fans and media are not always stupid.

-- Worst coaching move of the year: Easy. Fourth-and-a-couple-of-feet
from the Arkansas 39 with the Razorbacks leading 14-10 early in the
fourth quarter at Razorback Stadium. Mike Shula called for a punt, which
went into the end zone for a touchback, dulling the Tide's momen tum and
costing Shula a chance to show faith in his short-yardage offense while
going against his ultra-conservative type.

-- Best block of the year: McClain pancaked a linebacker and screened
off another defender as Prothro rambled for the go-ahead 21-yard
touchdown run against Mississippi State.

-- Most meaningful play of the year: Leading 31-0 on its first
possession of the third quarter against Western Carolina, quarterback
Croyle decided to spin away from a tackler on the sideline on a
third-down pass play. The result -- Croyle's torn ACL -- did more to
affect the Crimson Tide's season than any other occurrence.

-- Most discussed play of the year: Pass interferences don't come more
flagrant than Corey Webster's two-handed shove-down of Keith Brown in
the end zone at LSU. But no one on that officiating crew called it, pre
venting Alabama from a shot at going up 17-6, and Webster's long
interception returned flipped things in LSU's favor for the rest of the
game.

-- Offensive player of the year: Running back Ken Darby. Without him and
his 1,062 rushing yards, particularly the big burst after Hudson's
season-ending injury, the Crimson Tide offense is a broken-down heap
after week six.

-- Defensive player of the year: Safety Harper. In a close race with
middle linebacker Cornelius Wortham, Harper gets the nod with 77
tackles, a sack, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, a forced
fumble and perhaps the best sound byte on the team.

-- Top offensive lineman: Left tackle Wesley Britt by a hair over left
guard Evan Mathis.

-- Top defensive lineman: Todd Bates had a consistent year at
strong-side end, edging out fast-rising freshman Wallace Gilberry.

-- Top receiver: Protho wins this by virtue of his explosiveness and
versatility, which were underexploited in 2004.

-- Top linebacker: Wortham was the top dog in a strong corps that also
featured DeMeco Ryans, Juwan Garth and Roach.

-- Special teams player of the year: Place-kicker Brian Bostick, a
unanimous All-SEC selection, was nearly perfect, with 35-of-35 PATs and
16-of-19 field goals.

-- Top special teams artist: Matt Ragland deserves a special nod here
for his kamikaze style, which was sadly lost on the opening kickoff
versus Minnesota.

-- Top true freshman: This is probably cornerback Simeon Castille's
prize if he hadn't been hurt, but he wasn't the same after
hyperextending a knee. In a close duel between receivers DJ Hall and
Brown, the nod goes to Hall for a slightly higher level of consistency.

Alabama football still a hot ticket

By Tim Gayle
Montgomery Advertiser

TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama is coming off one of the school's worst seasons and has no
marquee non-conference games on the 2004 football schedule. That hasn't stopped
Crimson Tide fans from snapping up season tickets in quick fashion.

Alabama fans are Alabama fans, whether they're 1-11 or 12-0, said Brian Morgan of
Prattville. You've just got to keep the faith and go to the games when you can.

Season-ticket packages were mailed out Friday to more than 41,000 Tide Pride
contributors, with almost as many students, A-Club members and faculty stepping up to
the plate with their money in the wake of Mike Shula's 4-9 debut.

There's a feeling of excitement, athletic director Mal Moore said. We are bowl
eligible. I think, too, there's a big number in support of Coach Shula and these
players. There's a good, positive feeling in a lot of ways.

The changes on campus are easy to spot as the university has expanded its football
building, built new soccer and tennis stadiums and has expansion plans ready for
Bryant-Denny Stadium and Coleman Coliseum. The football team, despite its hard hit
from NCAA-mandated scholarship cuts, has an opportunity for postseason play for the
first time since 2001, and Shula has had a full year to work with the team.

Going into the season, I really didn't know what to expect, said Rhoda Vaughn, now
in her 12th season as the Crimson Tide's ticket manager. As ticket manager, I've
never been in this situation. Having not been here before, it was hard to judge what
kind of demand there would be. We've been extremely pleased.

Tide Pride tickets, which make up 41,190 seats in the 83,818-seat Bryant- Denny
Stadium, were sold with little trouble despite the fact teams like Oklahoma and Penn
State (originally scheduled for 2004) were replaced by teams like Utah State and
Western Carolina.

One of the most pleasant surprises came in the form of 12,000 tickets sold to
students. Vaughn said student demand had been down in the late '90s but has picked up
in the last two or three years.

Last spring, we increased the student allotment by 800 tickets and they were gone
immediately, Moore said. Our plan in '06 when the (end zone) addition is done is to
increase their allotment again.

Vaughn starts with 10,500 tickets allotted to the visiting team -- the number
requested every other year, including 2004, by Auburn -- and works backward, placing
the remainder on sale as single-game tickets. This year, tickets remain for the opener
with Utah State and the second non-conference game with Western Carolina because Utah
State requested just 200 tickets and Western Carolina ordered just 800. Also, visiting
teams often return allotments they can't sell as South Carolina and Mississippi State
have done this season.

We had quite a few single-game tickets to sell, Vaughn said. The good news is
they're selling. I've been very pleased to see the demand for single-game tickets.

Vaughn said the ease of ordering tickets from the Internet -- through www.rolltide.com
-- has helped fans access single-game tickets easier.

I like to take my son (Britton),said Jack Johnston of Montgomery. It's sort of a
father-son thing for us. We don't get to do a lot of things together. This is one of
those things we make plans to do or try to do every year.

Season ticket holders don't pay much attention to the schedule. Because of the waiting
list for Alabama season tickets, failing to order tickets in a particular season can
affect your priority in future seasons.

I'm going to go to Alabama football games, I don't care who they're playing, said
Colin MacGuire of Greenville. Over the years, people have wanted tickets because
there's a demand regardless of who they're playing.

Some fans believe there's no substitute for viewing a game in person.

You don't get the excitement and the feel of the game sitting in your living room,
added season ticket holder Ricky Anderson of Montgomery. It's about the event, not
just the game. I wouldn't miss that.

This isn't true is it? Oklahoma was never on the schedule for '04 as far as
I can remember. Penn State was, but not OU.

Alabama football optimistic about upcoming season

The Tide's several returning starters and a new head coach have let bad memories fade
and are looking forward to the 2003 campaign.

-- Jeff Dunnavant, Sports Editor

Head football coach Mike Shula has a full plate this season with no. 1 Oklahoma coming
to Tuscaloosa in week two. After nearly eight months of turmoil and three coaches
later, the Alabama football team is now less than two weeks away from its opening game
versus South Florida. Coaches and players alike hope that as game day grows closer the
team will be able to put behind them the unrest that has existed and focus on the task
at hand, playing football.

Despite having less than a month to install a new offensive scheme, head coach Mike
Shula and offensive coordinator Dave Rader feel that things have progressed at a nice
pace. The playbook still being installed by Shula and Rader is a limited one, but
builds off of the systems that previously existed under Dennis Franchione and Mike
Price. The team's performance in last Saturday's scrimmage, where 10 touchdowns were
scored, has Rader feeling much more comfortable about how his players have grasped
this new offense.

What's really encouraging is that I think in these 12 days that we've had together,
our guys are believing in this offense and believing in one another, Rader said.

On the defensive side of the ball things are looking up for the Tide. Despite losing
the dominating front three of a year ago to graduation, most of last season's stellar
group returns. Quarterback Brodie Croyle and running back Shaud Williams have had
nothing but high praises for the linebackers Freddie Roach and Derrick Pope. Since the
departure of Brooks Daniels, Demarco Ryans has stepped up to fill the spot at
linebacker.

One surprising improvement over the past year is the strong play of the Tide's
defensive backs. What was once a maligned group and considered the weakness of
Alabama's defense is now looking to be its strong point. (snip)

I guess sometime around 2:15 or 2:30 we'll find out just how good our DBs
are. I read where the Bulls have a no-huddle offense and several receivers
to pick from. That could spell T-R-O-U-B-L-E if we get confused and miss a
few assignments.

So, y'all think Croyle or Pennington will get the start?

I know you didn't.
Brodie starts and will be able to throw, but won't because our running game
should keep his totals down.
I look for Shaud to get 100 on the ground.
Personally, I cannot wait to see Brodie's arm this yeartalked to my
friend who works with Brodie's dad and said he is stronger...!

[RollTideFan] Alabama Football Featured Sunday on Fox Sports Net

2003-08-16 Thread kr10

Alabama Football Featured Sunday on Fox Sports Net
Friday, August 15, 2003

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama football will be the featured attraction on Sunday's (8/17,
9 p.m. CDT) SOUTHERN SPORTS REPORT on Fox Sports Net. The piece, by college football
reporter Paul Crane, addresses Mike Shula's challenge in getting the Tide ready for
the season.

The Bama piece has sound from Shula, linebacker Cornelius Wortham and tailback Shaud
Williams. Shula talks about the importance of developing relationships with his
players; the shortage of time in getting his troops prepared for the season and his
strategy of trying to cover the main things with his players, given that time
shortage; and, the newness of everything for his staff and the players.

Wortham discusses how the team and the coaching staff are the only people who believe
we can be real great, and how he believes Shula did the right thing by closing
practice sessions. Williams addresses how learning a new offense won't be nearly as
difficult as everything the team has endured in the last few months.

The segment also includes comments about the Bama program, from Don Shula and from the
likes of former Alabama greats Joe Namath, Bart Starr and Kenny Stabler.

And to see him chase him down like that was unbelievable. Thomas had a
ten yard lead on Teague and George caught him in nothing flat. I liked
the endzone camera angle of that clip. It really showed how quickly
Teague closed the gap. That may be the single BEST play in Bama history.

2003-07-29 Thread Joel Perry
Y'all hush. I can't see the dayum video. I can hear it for about 1 minute,
then it locks my computer up. Had to turn the power off to get it to
re-start.

So that's all I want to hear about the video.
