2004-12-09 Thread Jeff Todd
Bama lands a tough RB

Star running back Glen Coffee (6-0, 207, 4.4) of Fort
Walton Beach, FL gets his love for football from his
mother. He gets the toughness to play the game from his
father.
I was a boxer in the Air Force and I've always worked
with him since he was a little kid, Glenwood Coffee
says. But he loves football because of his mother.
She's a huge New Orleans Saints fan.
And on Wednesday night the Coffee's became huge fans of
the Alabama Crimson Tide. That's because at 8 PM Glen
Coffee committed to Alabama assistant coach Bob Connelly
and head coach Mike Shula during a phone conversation.
Basically, we as parents helped our son reach his
decision, Glenwood Coffee says. We did a lot of
research into it and Alabama is going to be very good.
If they hadn't have had all those injuries, especially
to their quarterback, they would've had a great team
this past season. You look at that and the fact that
they really wanted Glen, and we just came to the
conclusion that Alabama would be the place for him.
Plus, D.J. Hall was a freshman receiver up there this
year. He was a rival in high school at Choctawhatchee
High School here in Fort Walton. We played against him
for the district title every year and he and Glen became
friends.
This past season Coffee had 1,886 yards rushing, 350
yards receiving and 29 touchdowns.
He's a between-the-tackles runner, Fort Walton Beach
offensive coordinator Jim Ryan told TI in an interview
earlier this year. He loves contact. He's very strong.
He can bench 370 pounds and that's with a second pause
on the chest. He parallel squats 485 and power cleans
340. He's just a physical kid with speed and quickness.
He's a legitimate 4.4.
Last spring Coffee made a big impression when he was
named the MVP at the NIKE Combine in Baton Rouge.
That was a great award for him, Glenwood Coffee says.
He's worked hard to get where he is, and we're very
proud of him. Alabama's campus is just four hours from
here and we're already looking forward to seeing him
play.
Coffee is scheduled to make his official visit to
Alabama on January 7-9. He chose the Tide over West
Virginia and Louisville. He also considered Auburn and
LSU.
