[RollTideFan] What if Tide hired Tuberville?

2005-06-28 Thread kurtrasmussen

What if Tide hired Tuberville?
Tuesday, June 28, 2005
8Tub

Of all the charges and countercharges in the nearly 3,000 pages of documents
released recently in the case of Ronnie Cottrell vs. the NCAA in Tuscaloosa,
one of the most titillating comes from Phillip Fulmer. No big surprise there,
since the Tennessee coach did more leaking in this case than the Exxon Valdez
in Prince William Sound.

However, in one of his now-infamous missives to SEC commissioner Roy Kramer,
Fulmer said something that got me wondering about what might have been.

In a memo dated April 13, 1998, Fulmer details a laundry list of Tide players
he believed Memphis booster Logan Young had steered to Alabama. Fulmer
indicated Tommy Tuberville, who was at Ole Miss at the time, was aware of these
allegations but was reluctant to talk.

He won't talk about Logan because he wants the Alabama job, wrote Fulmer.
Logan likes Tommy and will let Tommy 'keep a few.'

Imagine for a moment if Tuberville had ended up in Tuscaloosa instead of
Auburn. Where do you think both programs would be today?

Interestingly, Tuberville's name was briefly floated in some circles for the
Alabama job when Mike DuBose was hired. It's widely believed he wanted the job
and who could blame him? However, Alabama elevated DuBose and the rest is
history.

At the time of the Fulmer memo, though, DuBose had already been hired and was
coming off an appalling 4-7 record in his rookie season -- which included the
infamous swing-pass blunder at the end of the 1997 Iron Bowl. The famous
Fourth-and-Dumb call cost the Tide an almost sure victory at Jordan-Hare
Stadium and there was already talk in some circles DuBose's time could be brief
at Alabama if things didn't turn in a hurry. So perhaps Tuberville was thinking
Alabama might make a quick change and he'd be considered again. At the time,
it's also a fact he had a sharp eye on Auburn as well, perhaps having already
met privately with officials about replacing Terry Bowden.

Regardless, imagine if Tuberville had ended up in Tuscaloosa. Would it have
been a good fit? Would Alabama be in the mess it's in today and would Auburn be
on a 15-game winning streak and have one foot on the Tide's throat in this
heated rivalry?

From this perch, I think Tuberville would have been a better fit for Alabama
than Auburn. His effusive personality would have worked well and having grown
up in Arkansas, having studied Paul Bryant and having been around another
legend like Jimmy Johnson, there is no doubt Alabama football would have
prospered.

But would the same problems have occurred in Memphis? I don't think so.

Even though he was friendly with Young and was acutely aware of the rumors in
Memphis, Tuberville would have managed the situation much better than DuBose
and his staff. Tuberville is a CEO type of football coach and not likely to be
run over like was the case at Alabama following Gene Stallings' retirement.

I don't think he would have been as reckless to win and cut any corner like the
case with DuBose. Tuberville is a very confident, if not cocky, type of coach.
He would have felt there were worlds beyond Alabama, had he been hired there
and it not worked out.

DuBose knew Alabama was essentially his only shot at being a big-time head
coach because the truth of that matter is there wasn't another major Division
I-A college that would have hired him (in that regard, nearly identical to Mike
Shula).

So while much of the infor mation coming out now in public documents has been
hashed out for years, the Tuberville nugget was most revealing.

Considering he recently signed what amounts to a lifetime contract at Auburn,
the odds of Tuberville ever making the trek to Tuscaloosa as head coach now are
nil.

However, considering Tuberville's enormous success at Auburn and the fact he
has beaten Alabama four of the last five -- including three straight at
Bryant-Denny Stadium -- one has to imagine a few Tide fans are sorry he's not
coaching their team now as opposed to coaching against them.

2004-11-08 Thread Rick Mc.
The thing I like the most about playing LSU in Baton Rouge is the fact
Bama gets to wear the Crimson Jersey. I love the home jersey. Maybe
that's why we usually play so well in Red Stick, hell, we think we're
playing a home game. :)

2004-09-23 Thread Rick Mc.
This list is just to quiet tonight. Doesn't anyone feel like talking
about the pig game? What's Arkie's defense like? I missed their game
with Texas so I don't know what Guillon and company have to go up
against. Can we move the ball on the ground against them? We all know
they're gonna key on the run, but what are our chances? How do we
matchup on the LOS (our O vs their D)?

I was thinking the same thing.
I am hoping that Kines puts one linebacker in charge of knocking the shit

have not allowed a sack yet this year. We will have to change that.

[RollTideFan] What if Bobby Bowden had come to Alabama?

What if Bobby Bowden had come to Alabama?

By SCOTT ADAMSON
May 21, 2004

Although baseball season is still in its infancy and the never-ending NBA playoffs
continue in their never-ending mode, there is already plenty of football talk to go
around - especially here in Alabama.

How will Alabama do now that it's free of NCAA probation?

Will Tommy Tuberville lead Auburn to new heights thanks to a second chance courtesy of
Planegate?

Will Alabama-Birmingham finally earn a bowl bid?

These are questions that will be answered soon enough. As for me, I'm in a what if?
state of mind, and my mind is wandering back to 1987.

What if Bobby Bowden had become the head coach at Alabama instead of Bill Curry?

I started thinking about it when I began looking at some preseason football
predictions - predictions that tout Florida State as national title contenders once
again.

Bowden wanted the job. He's a Birmingham native who spent his freshman year at Bama
before transferring to Howard College, now known as Samford. He had already proven
himself as one of the nation's best coaches by transforming a former women's school
into one whose football team could go on the road to places like Michigan and Nebraska
- and win.

But, we've all heard the story. Bowden didn't want to audition for the job, and he
didn't care for some of the questions he was asked in the interview process.

The result?

High times and gridiron glory in Tallahassee.

Turmoil and scandal in Tuscaloosa.

The Bill Curry era was a disaster. I know, I know, a 26-10 record is not disastrous,
nor was a 10-victory campaign in 1989. But Curry was a bad fit for Alabama football
and that made his three-season reign memorable for all the wrong reasons.

He alienated high school coaches in the state, he seemed arrogant at times, and he had
absolutely no understanding of the importance of Alabama football to its fans.

From the refusal to go to College Station for the Hurricane Game against Texas AM
to his public outcry over death threats when the Tide went to Auburn for the first
time, Curry at Alabama was like Howard Dean at a Young Republicans meeting - it just
wasn't right.

Alabama football was revived under Gene Stallings, who won 62 games and a national
championship. But after seven seasons Stallings got tired of dealing with Alabama
President Andrew Sorenson and Athletics Director Bob Bockrath, so he opted to head
back to Paris, Texas.

Despite his success it was under Stallings' watch that Alabama was placed on NCAA
probation for the first time, so his era was not without a black mark.

Since Stallings' departure, things have been a mess.

Mike DuBose proved to be the second coming of J.B. Ears Whitworth; Dennis Franchione
turned the Tide then turned his back on them after two seasons; and Mike Price - well,
a visit to a Skank Factory and getting fired without ever coaching the team to
anything other than a spring game is about all that needs to be said on the subject.

And now the man in charge is Mike Shula, a nice enough guy who came to Tuscaloosa
under the worst possible circumstances. He was selected over Sylvester Croom, which
led a lot of folks to think there's a color bar on the school's hiring chart. And he
managed just four victories against nine losses, including an embarrassing setback to
Hawaii in the season finale.

Obviously the verdict is still out on Shula's coaching ability, so it's unfair to
judge him at this stage of his career.

But that brings us back to the original What if?

One figures that if Bowden had come to Tuscaloosa, he would currently be gearing up
for his 18th season at Alabama. I'm guessing there would be more than one national
championship during that run, a few SEC titles, and the school would have the
distinction of having hired the two winningest Division 1A coaches of all-time in Paul
Bryant and Bowden.

Perhaps Bowden wouldn't have quite as many wins because of an SEC schedule, but
remember - before FSU joined the Atlantic Coast Conference it played what amounted to
a murderer's row year in and year out, and still managed a boatload of top five
finishes.

Alas, we'll never know. All that's certain is that Bowden has thrived in sunny
Florida, while the Crimson Tide is working on their seventh head coach since Bryant
retired and is no longer considered a national power.

Call the snubbing of Bowden a lost opportunity or a simple twist of fate, but it's
obvious who won and who lost in the deal.

And it makes a lot of Crimson Tide faithful wonder what if?

This I disagree with. I don't think that diddy bowden wanted the
Bama job at all. I think he wanted it to 'appear' that he wanted
it, but I believe that he used Bama in order to get a better
contract deal from fswho. This is when he got his 'lifetime'
contract. Even then, bowden had been in coaching long enough to
know that EVERYONE goes through an interview process. If
he really thought that he was so special that he shouldn't have
to, then his big head probably wouldn't fit in Bryant-Denny
stadium. He's got such an ego, that he would probably want
the stadium renamed Bowden-Denny.

I tend to agree with you Jenny. That article talked about what a bad fit
Curry was in T-town, I have to think that bowden would have been a bad fit
as well. His W/L record would most likely have better over time, which would
have won over a lot of people, but I still feel like he would have been a
square peg in a round hole.

[RollTideFan] What Price is saying

2004-05-04 Thread kr10
http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/7303546

What Price is saying -- and what his QB says about him
   By Dennis Dodd

EL PASO, Texas -- Selected quotes by Mike Price and others on his situation.

On being fired at Alabama:

No one had my back ... I think the Board of Trustees were really in favor of me.
(Athletic director) Mal Moore was wonderful to me. The president said, 'Hey look, this
guy is going. If you don't like it get a new president.'

On being warned by Alabama officials about his conduct:

No one ever called me and said, 'Hey you can't be drinking in public.' They gave me
$1,000 a month to buy booze for alumni. That was an expense account.

On his conduct at Arety's Angels, the strip club in Pensacola, Fla.

The owner of the bar was an Auburn booster of all things. I didn't even get up ... I
just sat there at the end of the bar and was a gent -- not a gentleman -- but I wasn't
going (yelling) 'Hey, baby, come here.' I just sat there and talked to the bartender.
He was the only guy who knew who I was.

Did you ever regret taking the Alabama job?

That's the easy thing to say, I don't even want to admit that. That's like I said, 'I
wish (current Oregon State coach) Mike Riley would have taken that job.' I still think
it's a good football job.

On perspective:

It wasn't the best of times but I've had the best of times with my family and my job.
I saw my high school friend, and he's got prostate cancer and my good friend's wife
has ovarian cancer. I'm going, 'Holy Cow, I'm feeling sorry for myself? Get real
Price.'

I agree and chances are good that all future coaches will understand the
magnification of the Bama job. CMP really should have known better than to
go out carousing the way he did no matter which team he was coaching. All in
all I'm pleased that things worked out the way they did for Bama. They
needed a long term commitment from a coach and with CMS they have it.

Re: [RollTideFan] What is up with the baseball team

2004-04-10 Thread Pat Smoot
They did try to make a comeback last night. They were down 6-0 until the
8th inning tried to rally. Allen Rice made a bad error earlier in the
game which cost them 2 runs, but we still cannot hit consistently. We did
at least make them use 3 pitchers we only used one. As I recall, we gave
up 2 homers. It's pretty sad though, that our best pitcher is a true
freshman this was his second Friday night start. He's obviously pretty
nervous, but he's still doing a pretty good job. We cannot afford to make
errors when we cannot hit the ball. We got lucky a couple of times or the
score would not have been as close as it was. We are badly missing our
power hitters of previous years. But, we're very very young at a lot of
positions every catcher we have is injured. Past balls last night hurt us
also.

2004-03-11 Thread Devan Orange
I am not talking about the season each team has had as the reasons for why I
think UF will be more difficult. I simply believe Bama matches up better
against MSU. For some reason we cannot seem to handle UF. I don't really
know what it is, I just know that every time we see them in the Tourney or
regular season we usually end up with an L.
I would love to see Bama get another shot at MSU, the players would have to
want a rematch so they can avenge a loss that never should have been.

BTW, do you think Bama wins if a lane violation is called on Shelton's free
throws?

Senior Class
Antoine Pettway went from walk-on obscurity at UA to an undisputed leader
By Cecil Hurt
Sports Editor
March 05, 2004
TUSCALOOSA | Its called The Butterfly Effect. Its the theory that any
minute alteration of the past can have a profound effect on the future.
The idea is that the flapping of a butterflys wings can alter a breeze,
which doesnt blow the pollen quite far enough to fertilize an olive
tree, so the nomad that was destined to be Alexander The Greats
great-great-grandfather starves to death in Hibernia, or something like
that.

So what if it had happened on a little different scale? What if somew
here along the way in the states high school playoffs in 2000, Wilcox
Central High School had run into some trouble? What if there had been an
angry referee in Orrville, or a cold shooting night in an unfamiliar gym
in Bay Minette?

What if the Jaguars hadnt made it to Birmingham for the Class 5A
championship game, where Alabama coach Mark Gottfried got to take a
second look at a little point guard?

Who would have made the shot that beat Florida for the 2002 SEC
Championship? Who would have made last-second baskets at Georgia and
Arkansas that will likely provide the push to put Alabama in the 2004
NCAA Tournament? Who would have inspired Tim Brando to call a Crimson
Tide athlete the example of what college athletics should be?

Where would Alabama basketball be without Antoine Pettway?

Fortunately for the Crimson Tide, the butterfly didnt flap his wings
four years ago, so Mark Gottfried was in attendance in Birmingham while
Wilcox Central was winning a state title.

We had been aware of Antoine, Gottfried said. He had played AAU
basketball. His father was a coach. But to be honest about it, we just
werent sure.

The doubts werent about Pettways hustle. But his outside shot wasnt
classic in form, and his size was a concern. Pettway was listed at 6
feet tall (and still is, on the Alabama roster), but that estimate may
be generous.

Gottfried might not have made a special trip just to see Pettway play,
but the Jaguars also had a big man, Gabe Kennedy, so the coach drove up
to the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex for the game.

Kennedy, who is now at UAB, played well, but it was Pettway who kept
catching the coachs eye.

You noticed right away that Antoine was the leader of their team,
Gottfried said.

We talked about him as a staff, and we decided that he was the kind of
person that we needed at Alabama. Our thinking was that here is a state
champion, the son of a coach. His parents were from Tuscaloosa. His dad
went to Alabama, his mom went to Stillman. He was a 4.0 student. And he
was a good player.

That left just one little problem there were no scholarships
available. The Tide was at its limit of 13. On top of that, Alabama was
actively recruiting one of the nations most highly-rated point guards,
Mo Williams, for the upcoming November signing period. In the chess game
of recruiting at that level, one move that is rarely made is signing
another player at the same position.

Pettway got his offer an offer to walk on.

I talked to Coach [Gottfried] on the phone, Pettway said. He told me
what the scholarship situation was.

There were some other schools that were recruiting me. Tulane had
offered me. So had Jacksonville State, Troy State and Louisiana Tech.
But I grew up an Alabama fan. I wanted to come to Alabama.

All the other schools told me I was crazy. They said I should go there,
where they would pay for it, instead of paying my own way.

I didnt know if it was the right decision, but I hoped it was, and I
wasnt going to look back.

He stuck to his guns, Gottfried said. It was hard financially on his
family that first year. But I challenged him. I told him to force my
hand, and show me that he was good enough that I would have to give him
a scholarship. So thats exactly what he did.

As a freshman, Pettway played in 29 games for Alabama, averaging 2.9
points per game. He scored 19 points against Ole Miss, and handed out
six assists at Louisville. By the end of the season, Gottfried made good
on his word, and in July, 2001, Pettway had his scholarship.

The rest of the story is vivid for most Alabama fans. Pettway is one of
the most popular Tide players ever, so popular that he was even
nominated to run for SGA President a couple of years ago. If his first
real taste of fame came because of the red shoes he wore in the 2002
season, those magic slippers have long since been supplanted by the
late-game heroics. His winning shot against Florida is the subject of an
artists print, the best-selling Alabama basketball related item ever in
the sports art genre.

Pettway might fairly be called the greatest walk-on in Alabama

getting significant playing time; he'd always provide a spark when he

I just found out..

When wimmen go to the bathroom at football, bouncyball, races etc. ,
they all wait in _one_ line until the next available stall opens.
That is just so RONG!

Mens get in there and form multiple lines at the stalls and urinals.

It's know damn wonder the women's 'line' is always so loong.

Dear Friends,

Please do not take this for a junk letter. Bill Gates is sharing

Now you're talking! I'm a traditionalist.

A playoff takes the emphasis totally away from the season and 1 or 2 losses
during the season mean absolutely NOTHING anymore because all that matters
is getting into the playoffs, just like basketball season now, which
abso-fucking-lutely sucks. The tournament is semi-fun, but the season is
almost a meaningless warm-up to the tourney.

Scrap the BCS, go back to the old bowl system where the SEC champ goes to
the Sugar bowl and we all get to argue forever about who the national champ
is, not some silly tourney champion where a 2 or 3-loss team can get hot and
beat an undefeated team, then get named NCAA Playoff Champion but we would
all know that they got their asses whipped during the season and aren't the
national champs at all, but instead just a team that got hot at the end of
the season, like oh say, maybe um KANSAS FUCKING STATE.

A playoff sucks.

Screw the bowl tradition. Even highschool and peewee leagues have a
LEGITIMATE champion. Anyting other than a playoff crowns a mythical
champion. Roundball March Madness generates more interest than the bowl
games because it is a legitimate tournament which produces a legitimate
champion.

RE: [RollTideFan] What the hell...

2003-12-07 Thread Tim Boozer
The legitimate champion argument is hogwash.

It does not produce a legitimate SEASON champion. The NCAA basketball
tourney produces a legitimate tournament champion which means that it
totally throws out the season and starts over. The team that can put 6 wins
together at the END of the season is crowned champion and the season itself
is relegated to second fiddle. B-ball season sucks. Hell, it's been going on
for 3 weeks and most of us could care less because we don't start getting
interested until the end of the season. I hate basketball season and I don't
want football season to end up the same way. Words like legitimate and
mythical are nice little sound bites, but that's all they all they are and
carry no weight.

Just say no to playoffs.

is getting into the playoffs, just like basketball season now, which

Scrap the BCS, go back to the old bowl system where the SEC champ goes to

It is more of a legitimate champion than letting
computers and sports writing hacks decide who they

Dude! You just contradicted the hell out of yourself!

How do you think they determine who gets into the basketball tourney? The
RPI rating (a computer rating system that nobody really knows how works) and
the ranking in the human polls are the two factors that a bunch of faceless
people called the NCAA tournament Selection Committe use to decide who
does and who does not get the opportunity to try to win six more games after
the actual season is over.

You criticise computers and sports writing hacks yet that is precisely
who/what would stand at the gates of any playoff and deem worthiness of
admission.

Championships should indeed be won on the field which is exactly the
argument AGAINST playoffs. A 2 or 3 loss team has absolutely no right
whatsoever to whine about not being allowed to play for any title because
you know what, they didn't win it on the field. They didn't take care of
business. Screw them! They should have won their friggin' games during the
season and the point would be moot.

Screw LSU, USC and Oklahoma. One of them will get screwed and should.

- Oklahoma had a chance to waltz into the Sugar bowl and blew by losing to a
3 loss KSU team.
- LSU had a chance for an undefeated season and certain trip to the Sugar
Bowl and blew it by losing to Florida.
- USC had a chance for an undefeated season and certain trip to the Sugar
Bowl and blew it by losing to Cal.

If you want to win a championship - win it! Don't whine about it.

Basketball has a tourney, football does not. It is a valid comparison
whether you are aware of it or not.

The coaches poll is included in the BCS formula. I don't think you are going
to find a lot of people who would support the idea if making the coaches
poll the ONLY criteria for choosing who plays in the national championship
game of any expanded playoff, but you are certainly welcome to try.

Opposing a plyoff is very simple. I don't like wimpy shit. If you don't win
your games during the season, on the field, then I don't see why a coaches
poll or any BCS style formula should go give you a second chance. You should
have taken care of business during the season, not depend a second wimpy-ass
chance in a playoff.

The BCS system works. Last year it matched the two undefeateds in the
championship game and OSU won it and nobody bithched or moaned. This year,
all 117 teams entered the season with the chance to run the table and nobody
had what it takes to do it. So, in years like this, or if there were 3
legitimate undefeateds, then everybody starts screaming for a playoff that
lets a bunch of teams that have absolutely no right, due to their on the
field performance during the season, the opportunity to have a wimpy-ass
second chance.

The answer, in my opinion, is a play-in, meaning that if you have teams at
#2 and #3 in the BCS formula that are within a reasonable distance of each
other, say 1.5 points, and have identical loss records, then they would play
a game the week following the conference chamionships and the winner of that
game would go to the championship game vs. #1 and the loser would be #3 and
play in the #3 spot in the BCS formula. This way, in years that it is not
needed, there is no play-in game and no crappy ass team that didn't take
care of business during the year gets an opportunity they don't deserve. In
years like this year, situations like the one we have now are avoided on
the field.

Obviously I won't convince you but I can't see how it
is wimpy when extra games are played to determine a
true champion. Like I said before, if the best team
doesn't win too bad for them.

I couldn't agree more. If the best team doesn't win, too bad for them. They
don't deserve a second chance.

What is your problem with my suggestion for deteriming a true national
champion?

[RollTideFan] What is Going on?

2003-09-28 Thread Rick McMahan
The pig game was PAINFUL. I can't recall Bama ever blowing a 21 point
lead. But like I said last week, I do not want to criticize this team
(maybe next year, but not in 2003). I will say this much, mental
breakdowns and terrible punting definitely contributed to letting Arky
get back into the game. The effort and desire to win was there
yesterday. Bama played with passion, but they were outmanned by the hogs.

I will also try not to over analyze this year's team. I plan to enjoy
the games, let the coaches coach, and not get to upset when things don't
go our way.

When will home field advantage return to BDS? The fans are loud, they're
into the game, but for some unexplainable reason Bama has forgotten how
to consistently win at home. That is just plain weird to me. Plus Bama
has forgotten how to win a close game. We're 3-10 in games decided by 10
points or less since 1999.

Brighter football days will come, but there will be more tough games
just like this one. BTW, that is exactly what the sanctions are supposed
to do.

ROLL TIDE FOREVER!
Rick

From NCAA BY-LAWS

32.6.3 Statute of Limitations
Allegations included in notice of allegations shall be limited to
possible violations occurring not earlier than four years before the
date the notice of inquiry is forwarded to the institution or the date
the institution notifies (or, if earlier, should have notified) the
enforcement staff of its inquiries into the matter. However, the
following shall not be subject to the four-year limitation: (Revised:
10/12/94, 4/24/03)

(a) Allegations involving violations affecting the eligibility of a
current student-athlete;

(b) Allegations in a case in which information is developed to indicate
a pattern of willful violations on the part of the institution or
individual involved, which began before but continued into the four-
year period; and

(c) Allegations that indicate a blatant disregard for the Association's
fundamental recruiting, extra-benefit, academic or ethical-conduct
regulations or that involve an effort to conceal the occurrence of the
violation. In such cases, the enforcement staff shall have a one-year
period after the date information concerning the matter becomes
available to the NCAA to investigate and submit to the institution an
official inquiry concerning the matter.

I have some news for you Auburn lurkers. The BAD NEWS: This time, it is
riding on a Shetland pony.

If you learned just one tiney thing from the NCAA case just leveled on
Alabama, remember this; the NCAA DETESTS illegal booster activity. They
view that as one of the most egregious sins.

Got another news flash for you. When Board of Trustee members are
involved, they shut down your program. Don't believe me? Go to Dallas,
Texas and ask the good folks at SMU what THEY did to merit the Death
Penalty. Hint - the guys in upper management were involved.

So, what do YOU have to look forward to?

From the 1993 Summary report:

Violation Summary: EXTRA BENEFITS: athletics representatives provided
at least $4,000 in cash and merchandise; assistant coach provided $500;
administrative assistant provided several thousand dollars in cash
payments; athletics representative approved a $9,200 and several other
unsecured loans based upon future earnings as professional athletes;
student-athletes allowed to enroll with oustanding accounts with the
university. LACK OF INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL. UNETHICAL CONDUCT. ERRONEOUS
CERTIFICATION OF COMPLIANCE.

From the 1993 Full Report:

B. Auburn University shall be subject to the provisions of NCAA Bylaw
19.5.2.3 concerning repeat violators for a five-year period beginning
on the effective date of the penalties in this case. The effective date
for the purpose of this action shall be the date the 15-day appeal
period expires or the date the institution notifies the executive
director that it will not appeal, whichever is earlier, or, in the
event of an appeal, the date established by the Infractions Appeals
Committee.

I've got new for you Auburn fans: You are at risk for a death penalty
case.

Boosters, along with Board of Trustee members, giving money to coaches
for an illegal slush fund to pay players. And this was occuring during
the time you were under the repeat violator window.

The statement in Rule 36.2.3 (c) that says a blatant disregard for the
Association's fundamental recruiting, extra-benefit, academic or
ethical-conduct regulations or that involve an effort to conceal the
occurrence of the violation.

This is as blatant as it gets.

All you Aubs who were snickering at Ronnie Cottrell's suit, you think
it is funny now? He's been accusing them of playing favorites and going
after Alabama and it's coaches in a vendetta. Well guess what? You have
provided the NCAA the P-E-R-F-E-C-T way to show they are not biased and
to help blunt the impact his suit will have on their activities.

Ex-coach. Tape. Boosters. Board Members.

I don't know whether the NCAA will have mercy on you. You better pray
that they do. If not, those dead eagles are just the preview of coming
attractions.

 From NCAA BY-LAWS

 32.6.3 Statute of Limitations
Allegations included in notice of allegations shall
 be limited to
possible violations occurring not earlier than four
 years before the
date the notice of inquiry is forwarded to the
 institution or the date
the institution notifies (or, if earlier, should
 have notified) the
enforcement staff of its inquiries into the matter.
 However, the
following shall not be subject to the four-year
 limitation: (Revised:
 10/12/94, 4/24/03)

 (a) Allegations involving violations affecting the
 eligibility of a
 current student-athlete;

 (b) Allegations in a case in which information is
 developed to indicate
a pattern of willful violations on the part of the
 institution or
individual involved, which began before but
 continued into the four-
 year period; and

 (c) Allegations that indicate a blatant disregard
 for the Association's
 fundamental recruiting, extra-benefit, academic or
 ethical-conduct
regulations or that involve an effort to conceal the
 occurrence of the
violation. In such cases, the enforcement staff
 shall have a one-year
period after the date information concerning the
 matter becomes
available to the NCAA to investigate and submit to
 the institution an
 official inquiry concerning the matter.

I have some news for you Auburn lurkers. The BAD
 NEWS: This time, it is
 riding on a Shetland pony.

If you learned just one tiney thing from the NCAA
 case just leveled on
Alabama, remember this; the NCAA DETESTS illegal
 booster activity. They
view that as one of the most egregious sins.

Got another news flash for you. When Board of
 Trustee members are
involved, they shut down your program. Don't believe
 me? Go to Dallas,
Texas and ask the good folks at SMU what THEY did to
 merit the Death
Penalty. Hint - the guys in upper management were
 involved.

So, what do YOU have to look forward to?

 From the 1993 Summary report:

 Violation Summary: EXTRA BENEFITS: athletics
 representatives provided
at least $4,000 in cash and merchandise; assistant
 coach provided $500;
 administrative assistant provided several thousand
 dollars in cash
payments; athletics representative approved a $9,200
 and several other
unsecured loans based upon future earnings as
 professional athletes;
student-athletes allowed to enroll with oustanding
 accounts with the
university. LACK OF INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL. UNETHICAL
 CONDUCT. ERRONEOUS
 CERTIFICATION OF COMPLIANCE.

 From the 1993 Full Report:

 B. Auburn University shall be subject to the
 provisions of NCAA Bylaw
 19.5.2.3 concerning repeat violators for a five-year
 period beginning
on the effective date of the penalties in this case.
 The effective date
for the purpose of this action shall be the date the
 15-day appeal
period expires or the date the institution notifies
 the executive
director that it will not appeal, whichever is
 earlier, or, in the
event of an appeal, the date established by the
 Infractions Appeals
 Committee.

I've got new for you Auburn fans: You are at risk
 for a death penalty
 case.

Boosters, along with Board of Trustee members,
 giving money to coaches
for an illegal slush fund to pay players. And this
 was occuring during
the time you were under the repeat violator
 window.

The statement in Rule 36.2.3 (c) that says a blatant
 disregard for the
 Association's fundamental recruiting, extra-benefit,
 academic or
ethical-conduct regulations or that involve an
 effort to conceal the
 occurrence of the violation.

This is as blatant as it gets.

All you Aubs who were snickering at Ronnie
 Cottrell's suit, you think
it is funny now? He's been accusing them of playing
 favorites and going
after Alabama and it's coaches in a vendetta. Well
 guess what? You have
provided the NCAA the P-E-R-F-E-C-T way to show they
 are not biased and
to help blunt the impact his suit will have on their
 activities.

 Ex-coach. Tape. Boosters. Board Members.

I don't know whether the NCAA will have mercy on
 you. You better pray
that they do. If not, those dead eagles are just the
 preview of coming
 attractions.
