The Joe Kines defense doesn't defend the QB, so we need all the help we can get. Southern Miss QB out; Guillon could not start today From combined reports October 09, 2004 HATTIESBURG, Miss. | Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower said Friday that Dustin Almond, the Golden Eagles' starting quarterback, will not play next Saturday at Alabama. Almond, a junior from Orange Park, Fla., suffered a hamstring injury in the final seconds of regulation Thursday night on an 18-yard touchdown run that put Southern Miss' game against Houston into overtime. Backup Damion Carter replaced Almond and led the Golden Eagles to a 35-29 overtime victory. Bower said that Almond's hamstring is strained, not torn, but that he would be out from two to three weeks. He ruled out any chance of the quarterback returning in time to play against the Crimson Tide next weekend at Bryant-Denny Stadium, moving Carter into the starting position. I don't know how long he'll be out, Bower said. That's an individual thing. Some guys get better quicker than others. It depends on how he responds. Southern Miss improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1981 with the win over Houston.
