Servers Alive needs a real modem to send out the SMS messages. A modem of a
cellphone isn't seen as a real modem and will (in most cases) not work
correctly.
But from a cost point of view you still would have the call from the
cell-phone to the provider and the cost of receiving the text message.
Don't forget to vote for Servers Alive in the annual Sunbelt Target Awards

Subject: [SA-list] SMS From Workstation
Hi Everyone,
At present my setup of Servers Alive operates through a modem to a Telco
paging service and thence to a cellphone capable of receiving alphanumeric
messages. The only problem with this is that I get charged for the PSTN call
as well as the text message from the paging service (something like 39 cents
per call).
What I would like to know is can a workstation be setup to use a text
capable phone (using a GPRS modem embedded in the phone) plugged into a
serial port to text directly to a text capable phone with SA alerts.
If I can do this I can half the costs.
TIA
- Russell
