Classic Gaming Expo - UK show - in 9 days time!
Saturday 13th August - CGE-UK show! For those that are interested the second CGE-UK show is taking place at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon, London on Saturday 13th August from 10am to 7pm. Following on from the show's success last year, this year's show should be a corker. What's it all about? To put it simply it's the biggest All Format Retro gaming event of the year! I'll be there showing off some Sam bits and pieces, and I hope to meet a fair few Sam owners there like last year! Tickets cost a tenner, and all the info can be found at: http://www.cgeuk.com Colin = Quazar : Hardware, Software, Spares and Repairs for the Sam Coupe April 1995-2005 - Celebrating 10 Years of developing for the Sam Coupe New Website now up: http://www.samcoupe.com/

Excellent going On the subject of shows... anything else coming up soon in the UK? Is there a Norsam show? When? I'd love to be able to go to the German shows - but they always end up at the wrong day for me :(Colin Piggot [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Saturday 13th August - CGE-UK show! For those that are interested the second CGE-UK show is taking place at theFairfield Halls in Croydon, London on Saturday 13th August from 10am to 7pm.Following on from the show's success last year, this year's show should be acorker. Wasn't the last CGE-UK show the one where Matthew Smith turned up? I missed it, and I can't make this one either. :-/ Si

New media up on www.samcoupe.com
There's a few new bits of media that i've posted up on my site at www.samcoupe.com The first three, are short snippets of music from the Sam for some forthcoming games, which has been composed by David Suzuki-Sanders. There is also a short video of the prototype Mayhem Accelerator running. The video shows the Sam running a ZX Spectrum emulator (with Thing Bounces Back) as in graphics MODE 1 the Mayhem gives the fastest speed up (of about 275% with the prototype) as the extra MODE 1 slowdown is ignored. I'll be producing more videos of the Mayhem in action once the next stage of the prototype is complete and the accelerator is running at its full speed. You'll find the download links in the relevant news articles on the main page. Is there a stage 2? :-) Thanks. :-) (And thanks to everyone else who's given encouragement!) I might add mouse and bell support. I could also add num/caps/scroll-lock indicators (maybe with kaleidoscope...) Also, I've got to deal with key-clashing and do key repeat. The main annoyances at the moment are ESCAPE not working, and a strange bug when releasing a key... it thinks the key is pressed again briefly when it's released. I'm going to try adding a delay after the keyboard scan, to see if that makes the problem go away. Some sort of 'FN' key is something I'm thinking about... For example, it could toggle between function keys and the numeric keypad. Cheers, -- Stuart Brady

Stuart Brady wrote: The delay seems to have worked... although I'm wondering if there's a better way to fix this. Has anyone else had this problem? Sounds like that could just be normal key bounce? The ROM scanning does a bit more tracking to avoid the duplicates. I'm still wondering whether you can use the ROM scanner, perhaps supplemented with manual scanning of some (mainly shift) keys. On the PC side you generally only to handle 1 regular key pressed at a time, with shift keys as special cases. On the SAM side you could track and report any changes in shift keys, any regular key events (including ROM-generated repeats), as well as key releases (monitored as you scan shift keys, to know when all are released). With those details on the PC side you should know enough to change from the previous to the new key state, including layout mappings for symbols. You could even generate missing PC keys by combinations of SAM keys, with it handled as another type of mapping. SimCoupe uses that trick already, but in reverse of course! Si

I've just tried it... actually, I was testing to see whether it would work in X, but SimCoupe happened to be running already. :-) One problem with SimCoupe: if you're using a real SAM as the keyboard, you presumably don't want the SAM mapping mode... but the raw mode doesn't map the -=[];',./ keys to the keys in corresponding positions on a SAM. (BTW, I've just tried using Dvorak in SimCoupe and it works as I'd expect -- the emulated SAM stays with QWERTY, but the UI does the right thing. Nice one, Si!) The other glitch I've noticed with SimCoupe (but it applies to other programs too) is with caps lock... ideally, it should not change X's caps lock state (except in GUI, obviously). I can imagine that being SDL's fault, though. The last problem is with my code... You can't press the numeric keypad keys as they've been mapped to the function keys. I think it's an interesting project, even if it's not all that useful to most people. People felt the same way about my Lenslok emulator (and were right). Thanks. :-) The Lenslok emulator looks cool, although I've not used anything that needs it, yet. Cheers, -- Stuart Brady
