[Samba] linux ldap samba-PDC windows

2003-01-23 Thread azzouz
hi all,

i have linux and windows machines.
ldap as server account and samba server as PDC.
When an user changed his password from a windows machine he must also
change the password in a linux machine.
How could a user change his password once only.

thanks.

[Samba] Really bad Read performance

2003-01-23 Thread news.broadpark.no
Running Samba 2.2.7, compiled with LDAP support. I'm suffering from really
poor read performance problems on the server. Write speed is fine (after
adding interface = ip of eth0/24), giving about 4.4 MB/s. However,
reading files from the samba shares is just not usable. Reading a large (34
MB) file from the server takes more than 3 minutes on a W2K Pro client.

NIC on both server and client is set to 100/FD.

I've tried changing socket options = ..., but no settings I've come accoss
makes any difference.

Does anyone have any good ideas as to what I can do to fix this?

Regards, Thomas

With unix passwd sync (AFAIK theres something else for ldap in samba
3.0), or with a webinterface. Or just change them on the linux machine
via script so that the samba-passwd gets updated automatically.

take a look at the scripts at samba.idealx.org

Re: [Samba] Initial Samba setup

2003-01-23 Thread Brian
You might also post your smb.conf file to aid people in assisting you.

I like the shutting down the firewall idea. That could be it.

One other idea I have without seeing the smb.conf is to make sure that
the IP address of the machine giving you that error is among those
allowed in smb.conf. If your smb.conf restricts access to a certain IP
range, then if this machine is not in that range it would be denied
access in the way you describe.

Steve wrote:

My WinXP pro box is seeing the Samba server but I get the following
error when try to access the server.

\\Linux is not accessible. Might not have permission to use this

The network path was not found.

I have done a testparm on the smb.conf and all is OK. I do have a unix,
samba and a windows user/password that are identical. I can do a
smbclient on the xp box and see the shares at that end.

I currently have the following shares setup on Linux box.

Share Name	Path Security

homes All Home Directories	Read/write to all known users
printers All Printers Printable to everyone
public 		/home/samba/public	Read/write to everyone
Steve /home/steve Read/write to all known users

Being new to Linux let alone Samba I hope I've over looked something
really simple!

Help me please!

I know how to do it by adding sym links in /etc/init.d/rc?.d, but I wanted

Re: [Samba] SuSE 8.1 start SMB at boot

2003-01-23 Thread Brian
In SuSE 8.0, I would start the Yast2 Control Center, select the System
tab, select the Runlevel editor, click on the Runlevel properties
button, scroll down to smb and highlight it, select it to run in
runlevels 2, 3, and 5, and click Finish. I would be surprised if that's
changed much in SuSE 8.1.

Re: [Samba] Can't get Win 95 to see SMB

2003-01-23 Thread Steve Branston
I think your problem is that you don't have a path= statement in your
[homes] defininition.

You need a :-

path=/home/%u

or similar otherwise samba won't know what to share!!

Also, have you gone through DIAGNOSIS.txt in docs/textdocs ?
If the other suggestions don't work, then running through this might
help further narrow where your problem is.

I like the shutting down the firewall idea. That could be it.

One other idea I have without seeing the smb.conf is to make
 sure that
the IP address of the machine giving you that error is among those
allowed in smb.conf. If your smb.conf restricts access to a
 certain IP
range, then if this machine is not in that range it would be denied
access in the way you describe.

[Samba] Printing Problem

2003-01-23 Thread João Paulo Just Peixoto

Hello folks,

I'm having some problems when I use a
shared printer. The printer is connected to a FreeBSD server with Samba
2.2.6pre2, when I send anything to to printer using a Windows NT 4 machine, the
printer prints it nice, but it's impossible to cancel the printing. When I open
the printer double-clicking on the printer icon in the system tray, I get a
message: "Failed to open, trying again...". Could anybody help me??

Thanks in advance.

RE: [Samba] Locating the MACHINE.SID fil

2003-01-23 Thread Robert Adkins
I may have spoken to soon...

I found a section that states to run the following on the BDC...

'net rpc getsid'

I ran that command and nothing happened. I searched the system for a
'net' command and was unable to locate anything as well. I checked a few
other things, seeing if it might be a part of smbclient or smbd, but I
haven't found anything declaring such an option.

Is this a separate program that is related to rpc or is it something
that should have been installed alongside Samba?

Thanks for the assistance!

[Samba] (no subject)

2003-01-23 Thread Tony McGrew
Chris,
I did this very thing although I can't tell you how because it just worked
right without my having to do anything. I am not having the server
automatically download the drivers so maybe that has something to do with
it. I keep my drivers on s share and then have to go pick them when I
install a printer. All of my print queues from cups update my windows boxes
about every 3 seconds. Maybe someone else can tell you exactly how to make
it work but it does work.

Tony McGrew

Hi list,
I used to have a novell print server; at the moment we consider to
migrate to a samba (2.2.5-124) controlled printserver using cups
(1.1.15-69) on Suse 8.1.
Problem is:
Using Novell the print queue you see on the (win-) client is
automatically updated every few seconds.
Using Samba it is not updated; means you have to click on refresh to
get the actual queue.
Is this a client (redmont-wincrap) or a server (samba/cups) problem?
Does anybody have the same problem?
Is there a fix?
thanx in advance
chris

[Samba] PDC seems to disappear (only service restart helps)

2003-01-23 Thread Sascha Steiger
Hi,

I have a curious problem with Samba as a PDC:

After a while (can't say exactly when) Samba disallows me to join new
machines to the
Domain or to change my password. The client says: Can't find domain XXX.
After a
restart of smbd and nmbd it works, until the next error like this occure.
Even a version
change from 2.2.4 to 2.2.7 doesn't change the situation. Samba is configured
as a PDC
with Profile Roaming. Clients are mostly Win2K.

Any hints?

Just grep the CVS, copy packaging/debian/* to debian/* and start
dpkg-buildpackage. Probably you have to set the correct version with
dch -i before invoking dpkg-buildpackage.

You can download the 2.2.7a source and compile it quite easily on Debian.

I did this and it works beautifully if you just follow the instructions in
the guide.

I find it better this way anyway as you can choose which switches you want
to compile with.

[Samba] Samba, win2000 logging in via scripts

2003-01-23 Thread Uri David Akavia
Hello.

I am happily using Samba - Thanks for the great work.

I have two problems:
1) If I try to login to a Win2000 computer giving the user and the
password (or just the password) on the command line (via smbclient or
smbmount) I get the following errors
smbclient fails with
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
smbmount ( mount -t smbfs) fail with
459: session setup failed: ERRDOS - ERRnoaccess (Access denied.)
SMB connection failed

However, both methods work when I don't give the password on the command
line, but type it in at the prompt.

Any ideas? (if this is a known problem, could you please direct me
torward the documentation?)
(I need this capablity in order to print via smbprint, running it
automaticly)
This work until the computer was upgraded from Win98 to Win2000.

2) I am using Windows with hebrew, so I have file names in hebrew. I was
wondering if there is a way to copy these files (they appear simply as
question marks via Samba). Note: this is much lower priority than the
first problem, I can simply wait until a new version of samba for this,
if necessary.

Please CC to me, as I am not subscribed to the list.

Thank you,

Uri David Akavia

[Samba] Winbindd - final step

2003-01-23 Thread Andrew Butler
Hello,

I have been trying to configure SAMBA and WINBINDD for a couple of weeks now
and I have been edging closer and closer but every time I move on a new
problem occurs.

I wish to integrate Samba with an existing NT network with a view to
migrating to Linux over time. I have installed SAMBA/Winbind on a RH8.0
machine using its native SAMBA package. I am trying to configure the server
for login using our NT id and passwords. Our PDC is NT 4.0 SP6.

Winbindd is running correctly and I believe I have configured PAM correctly
as according the the system log access is granted and no errors are
reported.

When I try to log onto the server locally at a console, I am granted access
(last login flashes up on the screen), however, the login prompt is
immediately refreshed. The system log gives no information other than Access
granted and which terminal I was granted login access on. The usual record
in fact after sucessful logins.

When I log in using GDM, I am told that The administrator has disabled your
account. The system log reports that gdm_share_session_start: User not
allowed to login and gdm [925]: PAM unable to dlopen
(/lib/security/pam_winbind.so). I checked the permission on the security
directory and they look fine i.e. Others have read and execute access.
Also, GDM recognises that I have entered the correct password i.e. it tells
me if I don't.

This is very frustrating. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks for your help.

Andrew Butler.

[Samba] cleanup_recycle.pl problem (maybe OT)

2003-01-23 Thread hans
Hi all

This maybe slightly OT, but I just noticed an interesting difficulty with
the cleanup_recycle.pl script that comes with 2.2.7a. I run it on a cron
job every night, deletes files and directories after 3 days. The trouble I
have is that some of my directory are named with spaces in them ie Base
Maps rather than a more proper Base_Maps The script really doesn't like
those spaces, it tries to delete Base and then stops. My perl is rather
non-existent. I was wondering if anybody out there has run into this and
figured a work around. Many thanks.

Re: [Samba] New Debian Packages?

2003-01-23 Thread Trey Nolen
Some people have already answered you on getting the newer versions for
Debian, but I'm not sure that is your issue. Have you changed the oplocks
settings? I haven't used a version of Samba yet that didn't have some
problems with databases and multiple users without having to disable
oplocks.

Trey Nolen

 Hi there,
does anyone know where I can get new samba packages for debian, because
woody is at 2.2.3a-12 and this version has definitev a problem with
Access 97 databases... *arg* And I'm not able to produce new debian
 packages myself.

 Any help is appreciated...

 Thanks

you can use rpcclient's lsaquery query command on samba2 (i think)

Let me guess. If I do it this way samba acts as a pdc but the clients do

 technique?

That makes them act as BDCs instead of all trying to be a PDC. Trying to
deploy multiple PDCs in an NT4 domain and syncing between them will
introduce nasty race conditions that should be avoided.

[Samba] Short lock-ups when connecting to Samba server (2.2.2) from WindowsME

2003-01-23 Thread George Lenzer
I am running Samba version 2.2.2 on a Linux 2.4.17 kernel. I compiled
it myself last year. Soon after setting it up I installed Windows ME on
another desktop machine. Initially, everything seemed to be fine. But
I noticed (after a few re-installs of Windows) that after applying all
the Critical updates for Windows ME, my connection to the Samba server
became odd. At first, I could connect and brows as usual or map a
drive. After a few minutes of access, the system would freeze for a few
seconds then come right back. The Explorer window becomes inaccessible
for up to 30 seconds, then responds to mouse events. If I continue to
access the samba server, the problem becomes worse until after about
three or four occurrences, the Explorer window finally locks up and I
can't do anything to get it back other than end task, or reboot.
Another symptom of this problem is that while watching an MPEG, DiVX or
other high bandwidth media file, the video plays fine for the first
minute or two. Then, as time passes, the file will occasionally pause
for a second and continue. The pauses become more frequent until it's
almost every other second. This problem also appears when copying files
to the server. The transfer gets slower as time goes on, and sometimes
a message will appear saying the the connection to the server was lost.
I am trying to figure out what the problem is here, how it might relate
to the critical updates. Anyone here ever experience this problem with
Windows ME? I haven't seen this problem in Windows 98.

Thanks,
George

[Samba] 2.2.3a multiple users from w2k term server denied access

2003-01-23 Thread Kerns, Mike
Hiya!

Running Samba 2.2.3a on HP-UX 11.0, precompiled binaries from Porting Centre.
Everything works fine until we have a customer that wants to put their app on w2k
terminal server. When the drives get mapped they are serviced by the same smbd daemon
on the UNIX box; this is the same behavior as if you mapped the same drive twice from
any windows client.

After 2 or 3 users get drives mapped, no one else can map a drive from the terminal
server. Anyone mapping from another client can map just fine. Terminal server is the
full version, not the 2 user license version.

We tried this going to a w2k server and did not have the same problem.

I've searched marc.theaimsgroup.com and Googled until I can't see straight. Any
suggestions? Will an upgrade to Samba definitely help this? If so, what version?
HP's CIFS/9000 looks to be the same or nearly the same revision as I have already.

Here is my conf file . . .

[global]
workgroup = DEV
netbios name = SERVER1

You can try this:
add the line

deb ftp://de.samba.org/samba.org/Binary_Packages/Debian/ stable main

to your /etc/apt/sources.list then apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade.
This should update Samba to 2.2.7a.

did you look at the hosts.allow, interfaces only etc. from

[Samba] High count of smb processes

2003-01-23 Thread Guenther Bergmann
Hi,
i've got an strange problem here which i can't resolve without any
help. First of all some information on the network and the
environment:
We have 8 different locations, consisting of 11 lans (class-C
subnets with netmask 255.255.255.0). These locations are connected
via routers. At each location we have 1 to 3 AIX servers running
samba. AIX is version 4.3.3 with ML 9 or 10. Samba is version
2.0.7.
Windows NT Networking is working fine; each of the locations
constitutes one NT 4 domain.
The samba servers all belong to one Workgroup (called workgroup).

The problem is: we see Samba servers which spawn a lot of smb
processes. The count goes up to about 300 processes without one
share being used. Applications supporters are not really happy with
this count of smb processes because they see a significant
performance degration. Btw: Clients can connect fine.

I have found the following information in the logfiles:

Re: [Samba] Beginner with a beginner's question..

2003-01-23 Thread Joel Hammer
I think you should first learn how to use linux, than learn to use samba.

Learn about permissions!

Learn bash, vi, sed, grep, cat, less, find, cd, ls, chown, chmod, locate, and cut.
All of these, except vi, have good man pages (man ls or man bash). There are
books on bash, vi, and sed, and they are needed.

Learn about permissions!

Learn how to print with linux. I don't mean set up a printer. I mean
learn how your printing software works. Printing problems will never go
away.

Learn about permissions!

It won't do you much good to use samba if you can't use your linux
box. Samba simply allows linux to interact with windows boxes.

After some study I leared that SAMBA is responsible for all this so this

allow a password attempt to be made).

d: I can ping the Linux box and from the Linux can ping other computers
(Browser works on the linux over ADSL modem - network uses DHCP so no fixed

e: I try to start SAMBA using smbd -D and then nmbd -D (or rcsmb start,
which I assume is some sort of script delivered with the Linux installation

e: From Windows PCs I can not find the Linux PC in the network (it is

I get the impression that there is no difference before or after starting

I have sifted through FAQs and other help docs but can't seem to find

Is anyone out there able to give a simple tip to a simpel beginner (without

don't know how to use it and also not how to close it ! I have now a
console open in editor mode which I can not manage to closed.. stupid eh

[Samba] Samba upgrade and NT domain membership

2003-01-23 Thread Paul Taylor
Hi all,

I have a number of Samba servers that are members of an NT domain
(i.e. the PDC/BDC runs NT.) This works fine until I need to
upgrade Samba - then it loses it's membership of the domain.
(I take a copy of the current Samba directory and install the new
version over the top so that the secrets.tdb file etc. are retained.)

The only way I found to restore the domain membership is to delete the
Samba server from the domain on the PDC and add it back again, then run
smbpasswd -j domainname on the Samba server.

Is there a way to keep the previous domain membership across an upgrade?
Failing that, is there a simpler way to restore the domain membership?
(Preferably without needing access to the PDC.)

Thanks in advance.

Looking at that script, I think it probably needs to be rewritten
altogether. But as a quick-fix I think you can probably replace the line
  $r = `rm -f $_ 2 /dev/zero`;
with
  chomp($_);
  unlink($_);
and replace
  $r = `rmdir $_ 2 /dev/zero`;
with
  chomp($_);
  rmdir($_);

This assumes you're using perl 5, perl 4 didn't have chomp(). Most
people have perl 5 now, though.

Hi there,
I have a really ugly problem, which, as I know is partially selfmade.
But to the problem:
I have five servers running samba-2.2.3a-12 (latest Debian Woody

servers act as pdc for an own nt-domain. Now to keep the administrative
work as low as possible I have this one master server. Via this server
we/our customer adds/deletes all user accounts. This works as expected
and cvs is my friend here. The users can change their passwords via nt,
because the scripts for passwd program manage this part. But (!) now
our machines start to change their workstation trust account passwords
and for this I found no possibility to execute a script if this happens.
Does anyone of you know how I can handle this problem? And I don't want
to update to samba 3.0 with ldap (as in: [1]).

file change notification issues

2003-01-23 Thread Hal Roberts
The purpose of this mail is to make sure no one else is
working on / has already finished hacking samba's file
change notification support to support notification of
individual file changes. If not, I plan on doing so forthwith.

More details:

I've been wrestling with samba for the past couple of weeks
trying to get it to play nicely with IIS. I've got IIS
running with a samba share as the root directory, and
everything works well except for asp caching. When running
from a samba share, IIS refuses to invalidate any cached
asps, even if the cached asp is modified or even deleted or
moved.

I've finally pegged the problem as samba file change
notification support. The cifs reference at:

http://www.snia.org/tech_activities/CIFS/

indicates that samba should send back information about
which files triggered a notification and why for any
directory with notification running (for instance,
/test/test.asp and FILE_ACTION_MODIFIED). Samba should send
back a list of such file/action records with one record for
each file action that triggered the notification, up to the
maximum as determined by the parameter count field in the
request. If the number of records would be greater that the
max allowed, the samba server should return a
STATUS_NOTIFY_ENUM_DIR error.

The samba notification stuff as written does not keep track
of which specific files were changed and just *always*
returns the STATUS_NOTIFY_ENUM_DIR error. This approach
seems to work fine for handling windows explorer updates,
but IIS and presumably other applications just drop these
replies as errors.

I hacked the notify stuff to return a hard coded file /
action record of a file I knew I was changing to test this
theory, and the hack did indeed fix the problem -- when I
changed the hard coded file, IIS immediately invalidated the
asp cache for that file and loaded up the new file instead.

The big cost of adding individual file notifications will be
the need to keep a bunch of file information in memory
somewhere. The current code just does a checksum of the
file modification times of the monitored directory or relies
on the dnotify kernel stuff, which only alerts on whole
directories. To figure which file changed, the system will
have to keep the state of the monitored files in memory.
There is a project called fam
(http://oss.sgi.com/projects/fam/) that implements a daemon
that handles this sort of thing for the general case, but it
does not support all of the notifications that cifs requires
(it does not support notifications of file access, for
example), so the only way of implementing this correctly
seems to be to write it from scratch.

Thoughts?

It's not a Samba problem. It is a compiling or linking problem on
your box. You should use the samba mailing-list, not this list
for this issue and add more info to your mail:

- which compiler are you using, Sun Workshop / Forte or gcc.
  which version of the compiler?
- which linker , Solaris' or GNU ld?
- rm rpc_server/srv_pipe.o and recompile this file, I don't
think this will fix the problem.

Try the following command, you should get the following output:
# file rpc_server/srv_pipe.o
rpc_server/srv_pipe.o: ELF 32-bit MSB relocatable SPARC Version 1

If you use Solaris ld, make sure you have the latest patches.
I don't think it's ld, I would suspect the compiler.

With GCC 2.95.3 using Sun's ld I've never had problems compiling
Samba.

After I asked Sun to escalate our case a few weeks ago, we received
a binary fix for the fcntl bug for Solaris 8 and 9. It was not a patch,
just a tarball.

Last fall, users were taking 5 - 10 minutes to download XP profiles
with samba 2.2.5, but only 10 - 20 seconds with samba 2.0.6, with
500+ connections per server.

With the kernel binary fix, samba 2.2.7a is just as fast as 2.0.6.

Sun it releasing T-patches - T112233-04 for Solaris 9 and
T108528-19 for Solaris 8. We will be trying these out in the
next few days.

Re: linking smbclient commands with libsmb?

On Thu, 23 Jan 2003, Herb Lewis wrote:

I did a quick check on the SAMBA_2_2 tree and got the following size
differences when they were linked against libsmbclient instead of
the normal linking. I've attached the patch to Makefile.in I used.
Before running any of the commands you need to make sure you copy
libsmbclient.so to your library path and create a link to
 libsmbclient.so.0

While there are size reductions, in my view, this is not the cleanest way
to do this.

We should think carefully about this. What is happening is the
libsmbclient.so is pulling in many of the things that are needed by all
these other commands, so linking against it ignores the libsmbclient entry
points, but it does save space etc.

A cleaner approach would be to create a smaller base library, and then
link that dynamically to both libsmbclient and to other things in Samba.

Limitations of Samba-2.2.x as a domain member talking to an AD domaincontroller

2003-01-23 Thread Richard Sharpe
Hi,

Can anyone point me at documentation on the limitations of a downlevel
server being a member server in an AD network?

The specific case I am thinking of is a Samba-2.2.x-based server.

Yep - that's on my list of things to do for 3.0.x. :-).

if I may add, put the DOS bits in the VFS bucket. It will be much simpler
for everyone, even the NAS people without EA will be able to emulate them.

Consequences of refusing to mangle names

2003-01-23 Thread Richard Sharpe
Hi,

Has anyone tried this or does anyone have any opinions on what would
happen if we refuse to provide mangled names in the responses to a
find-first or find-next?

It seems that if we set the Short File Name Len to 0 in responses, that
might work.

I wonder which apps will break in that case?

The reason for wanting to do this is performance related :-)

I don't have any documentation but I can tell you that you should have
no problems if you install your domain controller with permissions
compatible with pre-Windows 2000 machines. As far as I can work out
this just adds the Everyone SID to the builtin Pre-Windows 2000
Compatible Access group.

If this sid isn't present you'll have all sorts of weird problems to do
with anonymous access to the LSA and SAM rpc pipes.

Finding group members - fix to winbindd_ads.c

Workstation Trust Accounts

2003-01-23 Thread Nicki Messerschmidt, Linksystem Muenchen GmbH
Hi there,
I have a really ugly problem, which, as I know is partially selfmade.
But to the problem:
I have five servers running samba-2.2.3a-12 (latest Debian Woody
release) which are controlled by one master server. All of the five
servers act as pdc for an own nt-domain.

Sorry about that, sometimes my guesses are wrong...

However, you should test this problem with the new version, because I don't encounter it myself.

Does this version also fix the Win98 name mangling issue?

QUOTE
From Jan-erik Söderholm again :
A problem with directories with more than 8 characters and Notepad/Wordpad
with Win98 client.
That's very true too. It's due to one of my optimizations, which was not
so good after all, and which is now useless anyway. I was not aware of this
bad effect because I have no Win98 clients. It will be fixed in the next
release.

Thanks for all your hard work on SAMBA VMS.

Hi.

There is a new release of Samba/VMS 2.2.7a at the usual location
http://www.pi-net.dyndns.org/anonymous/jyc/

This release supports ODS-5 file system, if (and only if...) you run VMS
Version 7.2-1 or later, and you have downloaded and installed the latest
CRTL patches for your version, which you can find at
http://ftp.support.compaq.com/patches/.new/openvms.shtml

This release should fix most problems you may encounter with ODS-5.

For example, I suspect that the Excel save as... and New Excel...
problem that was reported a couple of days ago by Carl Perkins should be
fixed with this release (providing that Mr Perkins uses ODS-5, which I guess
is true).

Enjoy...

The timeout_processing function isn't run nearly often enough to
implement 'max log size' without overrunning the size of the file by
many megabytes. This is especially true if we are running at debug
level 10. Checking every 50 SMBs is a nice tradeoff of performance vs
 log file size overrun.

Don't you think 50 is too often ? How about tacking it onto
the 200 check instead ?

Jeremy.
