[Samba] domain users in local groups with Winbind/Samba/Redhat

2003-02-21 Thread Matthias Rutzki
Hi all,

Sorry to mislead you, but I hope you're on the right
track now.
No problem.Your answer was the first thing which really helps me on my
project.

My problem is, my server is in an NT 4 resource domain and I can't create
domain global groups with members from account domains in it.
I have the same problem

Probably it works with NT global groups. But I don't have access to any PDC
in my domain. I can't assimilate the domain or even one global group in this
domain so that it suit my requirements.
I am working on a project which rebuilds an Windows NT Dataserver. Because
of cost and stability reasons we had the idea to migrate from Windows NT to
Linux/Samba.
Unfortunately the guidelines of this project contain things like comfortable
administration and a smoothly change between the systems. So after finishing
this project non-unix experts have to administrate this system. Without
local groups it doesn't seems to be very practical to accomplish this migration.
Probably we have to retain Windows NT.
Hopefully the local group feature will be available on Samba 3.0 at any
time.

Thank you very much for your help.
This saved me a lot of time.

Greetings

Matthias

[Samba] Samba installed: but not working - Please help!

2003-02-21 Thread Das, Shalini

 Hi all!

 Hope you're doing great.

I just installed samba (2.2.7a) on a solaris(5.7) database server and
while installation, I did not get any errors. I can also see the box
listed in the Network neighborhood of my win2k machines. But when I click
on the listed name to open it, I get the error
 Network path not found

I cant figure why this happening? For installation I followed a
step-by-step guide I downloaded from kempston.org which for a newbie like
me, really helped a lot which is here:
 http://www.kempston.net/solaris/samba.html.
 Can someone please help!

 Thanks a lot!

Re: [Samba] Joining Samba 3.0 to a pure Active Directory

2003-02-21 Thread Antti Tikkanen
On Thu, 20 Feb 2003, Alexander Skwar wrote:

 Hello.

I'd like to join a Samba 3.0 alpha 21 server running on RedHat 8.0 to an
Active Directory. This AD does NOT support Windows NT 4.0 Domains.

In a previous mail, I've been asked if I already have Kerberos setup and
tested. I don't. How do I test if Kerberos is working correctly for me?

As someone suggested, use 'kinit username@REALM'. You asked in another
post how to find out your KDC server: every domain controller is also a
KDC, so you should use that. If you get a Kerberos TGT, you have Kerberos
working.

If everything is working fine, I'd like the Samba server to join the AD
europe.delphiauto.net. For this, I should type net ads join. How
do I specify, which AD is to be joined?

In your smb.conf, you should have the lines:

  security = ADS
  realm = YOUR_KERBEROS_REALM.EXAMPLE.COM
  ads server = your_domain_controller.example.com

And if this is also working, I'd like to be able to login to the Samba
server with a username/password which is ONLY in the AD. Do I need any
special privileges in the AD for the server?

I don't know what you mean by special privileges, but I think not. When
doing 'net ads join', you must have a TGT for a user that has the required
privileges to add a machine account and alter some attributes (a Domain
Admin account will do).

When this is also working, I'd like offer shares. However, not every
user should be allowed to mount every share - IOW: restriction should
be done on a per user basis. If I maintain a local smbpasswd, I know
that this shouldn't be a problem - but what if I use AD to do the
 authentication?

Restrictions can be done on a per user basis, see 'man smb.conf',
especially things such as 'valid users'. When you use 'security = ADS',
this is also not a problem.

Re: [Samba] Re: Novell EDirectory as LDAP backend

2003-02-21 Thread Stefan . Voelkel
Yes, 8.6.3 on a RH 7.3 to be precise.
 I am using 8.7 on RH 7.3.

Works pretty good. I have not yet tried to integrate cups but user
authentification (unix login) is done via pam_ldap, i just have some
problems getting password syncronisation running, users can alt-ctrl-del
an change their windows password, but I want to set the user unix
  password too.

 That works for me, too.
Concerning the passwd sync, have a look at the
passwd program, passwd chat and unix passwd sync
 options in smb.conf.

Since I use eDirectory with ldap to authenticate users login into the machine,
I wanted to use the

pam password change = true

setting, but I can not change passwords (even with passwd) at all:

LDAP password information update failed: DSA is unwilling to perform

but that looks like an eDirectory or EPERM problem.

The only thing that does not work is to ldapadd or ldif import users
  with objectClass sambaAccount.

sambaAccount is an auxiliary class, i think you do need a real object
class (like user). Take a look with the Schema Manager (ConsoleOne) at
the user class, and the needed attributes (IIRC there are 4).

I have a real object. Are you able to add/import a user object with
sambaAccount on your system? If so, can you provide a working ldif
 sample that works for you.

The 2.2.7 smbldap-*.pl scripts do not work for me too. I appended a diff from
a working version.

I have tried the following w/o success.
Create a working posixAccount/sambaAccount user with c1. Export it using
the export wizard. Delete the object and try to reimport it.
 - object class violation

Ok that is rather odd ;)

RE: [Samba] Using working devmode from windows clients on sambaserver?

2003-02-21 Thread daniel . jarboe
  Any luck with this?

Not yet. Sorry. Give me till Monday.

Also, remote Samba printer means the actual samba printer, not one
installed on the client, right? So I could give the remote Samba
printer a working devmode on the server and *new* clients can do the
automatic driver download and have a working devmode already set?

 Yup.

Question again... once this is complete, will the copied devmode be set
for new printers when admin selects the driver from the drop down box
(Properties, Advanced tab, Driver:), or would admin need to run your
program to copy a devmode each time the new print share is created?

Thanks,

cups-1.1.14-15.2

Please upgrade to CUPS-1.1.18+ to make cupsaddsmb work with Samba-2.2.7a+
Please stick to the settings suggested in man cupsaddsmb, if your own
ideas don't work.

samba-2.2.7-1.7.3

Educate me please ...

I can't... ;-)

man rpcclient shows:
setdriver printername drivername - Execute a SetPrinter() command
to update the printer driver associated with an installed printer.
The printer driver must already be correctly installed on the print
 server.

See also the enumprinters and enumdrivers commands for obtaining a
list of of installed printers and drivers.

This sounds like the printer must already be installed - how is that done if not via
addprinter?

The setdriver command is meant to associate a different driver to a printer.
The members of the driver/printer pair to be chosen must be mapping to the
lists of drivers and printers enumerated by the enumdrivers and enumprinters
commands.

Currently, if I use enumprinters and enumdrivers (without a level setting), I get a
listing of installed drivers and installed printers. If I run setdriver for each of
the printer/driver pairs, will it work?

If you didn't get an error message, it should work.
rpcclient -c enumprinters 2 should list the new driver after the fact.
To get the clients to work with a new driver (if it had one already), you will
have to delete the printer first there (my experience). After that, *you* *will*
*have* *to* *delete* *the* *old* *driver* *too* *!* [To do this fast, right-click
on the *background* of the printers folder, select server properties and
hangle yourself to the tab/menu/dialog (not sure if it is the same in Win NT) to
remove the driver files in question. Only then will the registry entries be
cleansed. If you don't do that, there is the danger, that Windows will re-install
the *old* drivers with your second attempt.]

I just did it but don't have a windows
client to test it against until tomorrow (I'm connected remotely via a ssh terminal)

Please tell us how it works out.

Which versions of software are you using? Samba, CUPS? Which OS?

It looks like the drivers files are copied correctly and the NT drivers are added
correctly but the addprinter command says it's unsuccessful!

cupsaddsmb - why the heck can't I get rpcclient-addprinter to work?

Maybe because your CUPS/cupsaddsmb version is too old ?

The addprinter rpcclient command formerly used by cupsaddsmb has
long been replaced by the setdriver command...

Re: [Samba] Is Samba made for trash?!? Newp.

2003-02-21 Thread Jean-Paul ARGUDO
By then, we discovered that if we disabled all oplocks,

we got no more corruption.

I posted here weeks ago problems regarding Excel 97 file corruption. I
finally disabled oplocks then.

But day passing, I had new problems with Word 97 :-/ (new posts here,
mainly not answered but a tip on how to get clients at same time that
servers... -NET command usage...):

Many times a day, clients here when oppening a MS Word 97 document have
it in READ ONLY mode, but seems no reason fort that!!

I recently put oplocks *back* ON *but* with veto-ing excel files...
I hope this change could solve de pb..

Waiting for changes, I read again docs about oplocks (Samba HOWTO
Collection -R-O-X-, O'Reilly and SAM'S books too)

Again and again but as Jeremy says thereafter, seems a problem *in*
Word 97 ... Maybe I'll have to patch it (it's original version, just
patched with Euro Font Fix, nothing more, maybe the source of the
problems? -Idem with Excel)

That Samba file server has been incredibly stable,
serving terabytes of data to almost 100 clients.
We've seen no file corruption since that day. You'll
find many admins who agree with me - Samba rocks!

Same opinion here. Samba works like a charm. We got 2.2.3a Debian woody
stable release (damm when will they upgrade at debian?? ;-)).

[Samba] Encrypted Password/Auth Problem?

2003-02-21 Thread Khanh Tran
Here's one that's been bugging me for days.

I have two Win2k workstations. One can still map a drive to my Samba

must have changed something on it recently so that now it can't. The one
that works is a workstation I rarely use, so that's probably why it still
works, but proves there's no network/server problem.

I think I may not be sending the password the way the server expects it
because I know I'm typing the correct password, but I can't quite figure out
what's going on. My log shows only:

[Samba] Problem with Sharp AR-286 PCL Printer

2003-02-21 Thread Bob Boehmer
I am having a problem getting the PCL driver for the Sharp AR-286 working.
This is an LPD network printer. I created a queue on our Redhat Samba server
using the raw driver. The windows drivers uploaded to the Samba server
without a problem. But whenever I try to print anything to the printer it
comes out garbled.

I installed the postscript drivers for the same printer without any problem
and they seem to work fine. (We would just use the postscript driver but
unfortunately some of our drawings overflow the printer's memory when
printed using the postscript driver.)

I have also installed a PCL driver for an HP JetDirect network printer and
that is working fine.

We are running Redhat 8, Samba 2.2.7.

sharppcl is the printer in question. The print, lpq and lprm commands are
overridden because we use the same printer queue for both the postscript and
the PCL printer. The problem occurs if we have unique queues for both and
also if we eliminate the postscript driver altogether.

Any ideas will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

[Samba] Samba 2.2.7a 64bit executable on Solaris 8

2003-02-21 Thread Russell Aspinwall
Good Morning,

I recently compiled Samba 2.2.7a as a 64bit executable on Solaris 8.
The Solaris 8 server is configured to permit 65535 files to be open,
while Samba has been configured to allow 65500 files to be open.
These large number of files are required to permit simulataneous
compilations to take place a single build server, though there are
multiple build servers.

Last time I tried to use Samba (version 2.2.3a) this did not work,
however version 2.2.7a is working fine, however Samba is complaining
about too many files being open.

As Samba 2.2.7a is working and the compilations (and have been checked )
are taking place I am not unduly worried. However there is always the
possiblity of a problem so would like to identify why Samba 2.2.7a is
complaining in the log.smbd file.

[Samba] Segmentation fault

2003-02-21 Thread Kevin Smith
I was trying to get SMB_PAM to authenticate new users, and thought Ii
figured it out, typed passwd testuser and I get a segmentation fault back.
I tried rebooting (old habits die hard) with no luck. I was Googling and
found a few things, but (as always it seems) were unanswered or were I have
that same problem type messages.
My server is RH7.3, Samba 2.2.7a, the newest Pam_smb from the website.
I followed the directions with the tarball and on the site (which are
slightly different) with identical results.
/var/log/messages says Opening Session for user testuser then promptly
closes it.
The /etc/login file seems pretty straight forward, just cant get much
feedback to debug it properly.
Any help/direction would be appreciated.

Try disabling the WebClient under services of the XP clients. XP first
tries to use webdav to connect to the share when that times out it will
  then use smb.

If that really improves the reconnection speeds when using deadtime for
example, please include this tip in the samba documentation. Near the
sign or seal registry tips would be a good place imo.

Did anyone test the difference in connection times? At my location we
use kixart scripts to connect to 10+ shares when logging on to the smb
 PDC, any tips?

 or build from source.

I'm a little nervous about building too many packages from source. I have a
few and I wonder what will happen when I try to upgrade the server to a
newer version of RH (that uses a newer version of glibc)

I've got a feeling that I will have to recompile all of those compiled
packages and I don't know if my users will like to wait while I do that
(we're a small LAN but my users like to have working tools).

IMO sticking to some kind of package management system should help smooth
upgrades ... the problem is that I have to wait for the packages or figure
out how to make them myself

What are your opinions on this strategy?

It's the first hit on google. I've no idea what you're trying to
search for. http://www.google.com/search?q=cups

What are your opinions on this strategy?

If you don't build an up-to-date cups, you won't have a working
cups-based printing system with Samba. Sure, you'll have to be careful
when upgrading, but really. That's a given when you're upgrading,
regardless of whether you built from source or not. It ain't rocket
science.

If you download the cups source and unzip it, you will find a file called cups.spec in the top
level dir of the source. You can pass the spec file to rpm (or rpmbuild on newer redhat systems)
and it will create an rpm for you out of the dowloaded source files.

Makes it easy to have your own compiled app but still get to use package management.

Yes, you may have to recompile after major system library changes, but it is relatively
straightforward.

Good luck. and thanks to the cups maintainers who provide .spec files

[Samba] Samba locking problem

2003-02-21 Thread Kostadin Galabov
Hi,

I have the following problem:
I have a linux samba server and a lot of linux clients that connect to
it. What I noticed is that if one of the clients create new file and
starts do some operation on it - the file is unreadable for all other
clients (output od smbstatus: DENY_FCB RDWR NONE) - which is OK I
suppose. But if the connection between the client and the server
disappears while client is working on the newly created file, the file
stays locked and in some occasions even when the connection is
established again the file stays locked, the client cannot access the
mounted drive - and the client should be restarted. Which is strange I
noticed that if a Windows client do the same operation - the file is at
least readable for other clients.
I played a lot with the lock options and tried to remove the DENY_FCB -
setting share modes = no but nothing helped - I have this problem.
So please advice - how can I prevent this file locking when connection
between master and client disappears ?

[Samba] how do i umount a device busy ?

I have mounted a win98 machine from a ML8.1 samba 2.2.2

The win98 machine, as all windows machines do, crashed on me.

Now i can't unmount the mounted folder, If i do it from cli, i get

umount usr/Cad12: device busy.

If i try and cd to that folder, the console freezes and only kill
application will shut it down.

I tried as su and on another Virtual console as root, but it will not
umount. I've shut down the win98 machine and powered it up again. But it
still will not umount.

Also how do i kill a virtual console which is not responding.

[Samba] pam settings for winbind

2003-02-21 Thread Aaron Bennett
This is more of a pam question then a samba question, but I thought I'd
start here and see if I can get an answer.

I've gotten pam_winbind.so working with gdm (on RHAT 8) using the
following /etc/pam.d/gdm file. I've put + signs to show the lines I
added I added to the stock RHAT 8 gdm pam def.:

#%PAM-1.0
+ auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_winbind.so
+ auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_unix.so use_first_pass
auth required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
+ auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_winbind.so
accountrequired /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
password required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
sessionrequired /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
sessionoptional /lib/security/pam_console.so

I'd also like to configure sshd to use this winbindd. However, this
/etc/pam.d/sshd file doesn't work and I can't figure out why. I've put
+ signs to show the lines I added I added to the stock RHAT 8 sshd pam def.

#%PAM-1.0

[Samba] 2.2.7a breaks on ATM stack on AIX 4.3

2003-02-21 Thread Charles Bueche
Hi all,

we have a very large customer (90'000 PCs) worldwide that has problems
with a Samba server. Here are the details :

platform : IBM 4-cpu server runing AIX 4.3
Samba: 2.2.7a compiled with gcc 2.95.3
clients : about 100-200, worldwide
network : ATM, at least for the server (I don't have more details, sorry)
samba config : pretty straightforward, security=server (might be changed
to domain soon), a few shares, etc.

The problem appeared since clents migrated to Windows XP. About every 2
days, the network receive queue overflow, causing an ATM adapter interface
reset. All clients loose their connections (and their unsaved job BTW).

The symptom is visible with netstat -a :

==
Number of Rcv Buffer on ATM adapter 2207 == Tendency to grow
Rcv Q size last entry 280 == Tendency to grow
Number of connections to PDC116
Number of samba procs (os) 118
Number of samba client sessions 159
==

We are more knowledgeable on Solaris and linux, AIX and ATM debugging is
somewhat unknown to us.

Could someone confirm this behavior ?
Would you direct our search to Samba or ATM ?
Has anyone experienced the same problem ?
Or even a fix...

in short : any hint welcome.

Thanks and best regards,
Charles

Re: [Samba] Is it possible to specify Username/Password in a UNC when connecting to a samba server from W2K?

2003-02-21 Thread Steve Williams
Hi,

I guess in retrospect I should have given more details...

I have the samba server set up such that:

[global]
map to guest = Bad User
   guest account = a_valid_unix_account

[some_share]
   path = /somepath
   guest ok = Yes
   read only = Yes
   write list = special_user

I am talking about a network of ultimately 200 Samba servers connected
in a star configuration (all over IPSEC VPN) with our support office
being the center of the star. I do not want to have to maintain user
accounts on all 200 Samba servers for all of our support people, with
the associated pain of adding/deleting users, etc (I know, rsync, etc,
but I want to avoid all that...)

Anyone can browse to the server and if they are an unkown username, they
gets mapped to the guest account which gives READ ONLY access to
some_share. This is perfectly acceptable and safe, no-one can
accidentally delete things, there's nothing confidential on the share,
so read only is perfect.

Under certain circumstances, they will need to be able to delete files
off of these same shares, which can be accomplished by logging into the
remote samba server as the special_user which is explicitly given
write permission to the share. No problem with either Net Use or
Windows Explorer, Map Network Drive...

BUT... and there is always a BUT...

I am trying to do this through a browser interface to simplify
everything. I am setting up a central intranet web site that will give
access to SWAT on each of the servers, AND allow the user to browse the
remote samba server ( and lot of other stuff as well, VNC, etc)

For swat, I have http://remote_host_name:901/
For the shares, I have file://remote_host_name/

This works perfectly EXCEPT for the situation where the users need write
access to the remote shares. I was hoping that there would be a slick
way to say file://remote_host_name%username/ and have the dialog box
pop up prompting for password. Since this is a (hopefully)! secure vpn
environment behind Cisco PIX Cisco VPN concentrator, I would even be
happy with something that would embed the password.

A MUCH less clean solution, and my fall-back plan, would be to put two
shares that point at the same directory. The first share would say
guest ok = yes, read only = yes, which would allow browsing, and the
second share would say guest ok = no, read only = no which would
then cause the Connect As dialog box to appear (because of unknown
username).

Anyway, hope that clarifies things...

Thanks for any input,
Steve Williams

Re: [Samba] 2.2.7a - lot of open/close calls

2003-02-21 Thread Jon Niehof
I'me trying to track down a performance problem as I posted yesterday and
as I increase the log level I've noticed this...

[2003/02/21 08:19:06, 2] smbd/open.c:open_file(245)
  dm389245 opened file mr00257.bat read=Yes write=No (numopen=1)
[2003/02/21 08:19:06, 2] smbd/close.c:close_normal_file(213)
  dm389245 closed file mr00257.bat (numopen=0)

why does samba open and close the file so many times? this is the login
script file it is opening btw

*Samba* is not opening and closing the file that many times;
the client side is. COMMAND.COM and cmd both process batch
files one line at a time; I haven't tested this but I
suspect cmd opens the file, reads a line, closes the file,
executes the line.

You can check this for yourself from the Windows side with
filemon: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml

Re[2]: [Samba] Need solution to Printers window access denied, unable to connect message.

2003-02-21 Thread Tim Kubricht
Clayton,

Yes Success I have gotten rid of the access denied, unable to
connect error messages on both my
samba 2.2.7 and samba 2.2.2 servers.

Thanks go to Stephen Carville for the solution.

It took till today to confirm with my users that the problem has
gone away.

Clayton (after enabling SWAT on my samba 2.2.7 test server) I did
find the use client driver option hidden
in the SWAT Advanced page of the Printers queue window and from
man smb.conf I search for /use client
which says that if you do not upload printer drivers into samba then
you will get the access denied, unable to
connect message in the printer queue window even though jobs may
successfully be printed. And it says that
disable spoolss = yes does the same behavior as the use client
driver = yes option.

Note1: It does take about a minute for the opening message to be
replaced by the ready message But I
guess it is authenticating with the NT PDC during this
time delay.

Note2: The man page also says not to use this feature if you do
upload drivers into samba.

Thanks for everyone's help
Tim

I searched for driver, client, and use (all of which took
forever) in the man pages. My version 2.2.7a shows a use but
not with a client. It shows a client but only with code page.
Nothing similar to this.

I had this same problem and fixed it by using security = share
instead. I'm hoping to figure out the real culprit and return
to a user based security.

Thanks.
Clayton.

ps. I accessed the pages using man smb.conf and used the /

Joel, thanks for your help.

I added mx#0 (ie unlimited) and I can print any file.

From: Joel Hammer [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Assuming this is a postscript printer and that your clients send postscript
 jobs to your server:
Edit your printing command to be a nothing, sorta like:
printing command = echo job %s done /tmp/jobname

actually it's print command ...

Then, try to read the job with gv or whatever. If the file is complete it
would suggest that your printing software is acting up, not samba.

LOL.

I looked at the same document you probably looked at:
http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.html#AEN2358
and used the ftp example for any services I have,
except I leave out the pam_listfile.so line at the
top.

In essense, you want auth sufficient pam_winbind.so
before any other auth lines. Then you want account
sufficient pam_winbind.so before any other account
lines.

This is different for login-type services like kde,
gdm, and login. Follow the login example for these.

Also, the pam_unix.so use_first_pass you added is only
necessary for pam.d/login (I believe ssh reads that
after reading pam.d/ssh). Remove this line.

Following the pattern in the ftp example, account
sufficient pam_winbind.so needs to go immediately
before any account lines. Move it up one.

Finally, the /lib/security is implied (at least it is
in RedHat 7+... YMMV), so you can shorten it to just
pam_winbind.so, which is slick.

For reference, here is my pam.d/ssh file:
###
#%PAM-1.0
auth sufficient pam_winbind.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_stack.so
service=system-auth
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
accountsufficient pam_winbind.so

service=system-auth
password required /lib/security/pam_stack.so
service=system-auth
sessionrequired /lib/security/pam_stack.so
service=system-auth
sessionrequired /lib/security/pam_limits.so
sessionoptional /lib/security/pam_console.so
###

Use the pattern I explained above for any other
services (NetAtalk, FTP, etc.). Use the login example
for login-type services like kde, login, or gdm (as
you have already done). SSH seems like it would be a
login-type service, but it doesn't appear to act that
way.

Good luck,
/dev/idal

2003-02-21 Thread Das, Shalini

Hi all,

I just installed samba and this is the problem I'm facing: Test 8 of the
DIAGNOSIS.txt document fails.I get the error network path not found The
file says :

- fixup the nmbd installation
- add the IP address of BIGSERVER to the wins server box in the
advanced tcp/ip setup on the PC.
- enable windows name resolution via DNS in the advanced section of
the tcp/ip setup
- add BIGSERVER to your lmhosts file on the PC.

I tried adding the mapping to my lmhosts file but it didnt help. And I cant
quite understand what the other steps mean? Can you please help? quite
desperate here!

Thanks a lot
Shalini

RE: [Samba] Printing question

2003-02-21 Thread Esler, Joel Contractor
I figured this one out.

On the W2K AD FP Server, we installed the File and Print drivers for Unix,
through Windows Setup.

Then, throught the printconf, (or manually through /etc/printcap)

I have (all this without the parentheses)

(Windows Alias for printer):\
:ml#0:\
:mx#0:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/(Windows Alias for Printer):\
:af=/var/spool/lpd/(Windows Alias for Printer)/(Windows Alias for
printer).acct:\
:sh:\
:rm=(IP for W2K AD FP Server):\
:rp=(Windows Alias for Printer):\
:bk:\
:control_filter=/usr/share/printconf/util/strip_control_file.sh:\
:lpd_bounce=true:\
:if=/usr/share/printconf/util/mf_wrapper:

If you need any assistance, let me know.

We have printers sitting off of a W2K Native AD FP Server. Is it possible
to print to the printer with a Linux client using Samba? If so, how is this
accomplished?

[Samba] Samba error

2003-02-21 Thread Esler, Joel Contractor
When I (who has an account on the samba server -- under the same name)
eslerj go to another computer and try to double click on the samba server
through Network Neighborhood, I get an error message that says
\\(workstationname)\ The parameter is incorrect. however if I go to a
computer where someone else is logged on, double click on the Samba server,
it prompts with with a login screen, I can login as me, and it works...

What is causing this?

[Samba] Re: [expert] Brainstorm - add user script in Samba-LDAP

add user script = /usr/share/samba/scripts/smbldap-useradd.pl -w -d

Yes. The Manchines group does exist, as does adm and Administrators as
specified in /etc/smb.conf seen here:

wheel does not actually exist and both users in the system belong to

The second to the last line above is the important one I think but I am
not quite certain what it is telling me.
This line:
rpc_server/srv_samr_nt.c:_api_samr_create_user(1929)
doesn't, in my mind, indicate failure and the next line simply says that
the user wasn't found. I know it wasn't added because it does not show
up in the db.

Plain and simple, these messages don't help much and I don't know what
the other log levels are. I've tried bumping the log level up to 4 and
then 5 and then on to 6 but it doesn't seem to change anything.

Lastly, someone mentioned the possibility that there might be something
going on in my non-interactive shell environment. It would help a great
deal if I had a better idea of what the environment Samba executes the
script in is. I do know that of .bash_profile and .bashrc that one of
them is for interactive environments and the other for non-interactive
however, for all I know there might be something radically different
about the environment that samba uses.

Someone also earlier mentioned that there might be something wrong with
the linking of my Perl libraries in that non-interactive environment. I
wonder if this could be fixed by re-installing them?

ideas, solutions, and pointers to a FAQ or some good
pam documentation
are all appreciated, as I'll be the first to admit
that I don't know my
ass from my elbow with regards to pam.

LOL.

I looked at the same document you probably looked at:
http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.html#AEN2358
and used the ftp example for any services I have,
except I leave out the pam_listfile.so line at the
top.

In essense, you want auth sufficient pam_winbind.so
before any other auth lines. Then you want account
sufficient pam_winbind.so before any other account
lines.

This is different for login-type services like kde,
gdm, and login. Follow the login example for these.

Also, the pam_unix.so use_first_pass you added is only
necessary for pam.d/login (I believe ssh reads that
after reading pam.d/ssh). Remove this line.

Following the pattern in the ftp example, account
sufficient pam_winbind.so needs to go immediately
before any account lines. Move it up one.

Finally, the /lib/security is implied (at least it is
in RedHat 7+... YMMV), so you can shorten it to just
pam_winbind.so, which is slick.

For reference, here is my pam.d/ssh file:
###
#%PAM-1.0
auth sufficient pam_winbind.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_stack.so
service=system-auth
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
accountsufficient pam_winbind.so
accountrequired /lib/security/pam_stack.so
service=system-auth
password required /lib/security/pam_stack.so
service=system-auth
sessionrequired /lib/security/pam_stack.so
service=system-auth
sessionrequired /lib/security/pam_limits.so
sessionoptional /lib/security/pam_console.so
###

Use the pattern I explained above for any other
services (NetAtalk, FTP, etc.). Use the login example
for login-type services like kde, login, or gdm (as
you have already done). SSH seems like it would be a
login-type service, but it doesn't appear to act that
way.

Good luck,

Great! Did you learn anything new? Or did you cut

service (e.g. NetAtalk and Webmin), which is very
groovy.

[Samba] Samba for VMS

2003-02-21 Thread Vijay Sudhakar Ganugula
Hi,
I am trying to use samba for sharing files from VMS to Windows 2000. How
stable and mature is the VMS version? Any feedback from existing users would
be very useful.

Thanks,
Vijaya

[Samba] pam_mount_conf?

2003-02-21 Thread Aaron Bennett
Have any of you folks actually managed to get pam_mount working?

A quick google shows a ton of messages saying you can use pam_mount to
automatically mount a user's home directory on log in, but no messages
saying I use pam_mount etc -- I'm suspecting it might not actually
work. Or at least I might not be smart enough to make it work.

First -- pam_mount 0.5.11 from www.flynn.org doesn't compile on RHAT 8.
 Following is the failure:
pmhelper.c:176:27: missing binary operator
pmhelper.c: In function `get_fstab_mountpoint':
pmhelper.c:200: `FIXME' undeclared (first use in this function)
pmhelper.c:200: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
pmhelper.c:200: for each function it appears in.)
pmhelper.c:200: parse error before '}' token
make[2]: *** [pmhelper.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/pam_mount-0.5.11/src'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/pam_mount-0.5.11'
make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2

so much for that. However, pam_mount 0.5.9 does compile and install.

My pam_mount_conf has the following volume line:

volume * smb olinfs02 users /home/remote//winnt uid=,gid= - -

/etc/pam.d/gdm has the following two extra lines in it:
sessionrequired /lib/security/pam_mount.so use_first_pass
auth required /lib/security/pam_mount.so use_first_pass

I added them to the end of the file as per the README.

Nothing happens. No volumes are mounted. Nothing appears in
/var/log/messages. No errors are generated. It just silently fails.

[Samba] Samba Domain Support Problems

2003-02-21 Thread Brian White
I'm out of ideas here. I'm trying to set up a computer network using samba
on Linux as the primary server and a WinXP machine as the client. I'm just
beginning with XP, but I've been using Linux and Samba (for Win95/98) for
many years now.

So, I've set up samba machine griffon to support domains...

; Domain Stuff
domain master = yes
domain logons = yes
logon path = \\%L\profiles\%u
logon home = \\%L\%u
logon script = logon.cmd
add user script = /etc/samba/adduser %u

This should allow automatic on-the-fly creation of new machine accounts.

I've created a samba administrative account called machines in /etc/passwd

machines:x:0:5000:Machine Account (creator):/tmp:/bin/false

and a corresponding one in /etc/samba/smbpasswd

machines:0:3E3E844D9FA7D83317306D272A9441BB:57BCEA1EC8B53A61D032E6B338A0C23B:[UX
  ]:LCT-3E56855C:

Under XP machine watertown, I've gone to Control Panel, System, Computer
Name Changes, member of domain 'precidia', OK.

Samba runs and logs

[2003/02/21 15:30:58, 2] smbd/reply.c:reply_special(92)
  netbios connect: name1=GRIFFON name2=WATERTOWN

get_md4pw: Workstation watertown$: no account in domain
[2003/02/21 15:30:59, 2] smbd/server.c:exit_server(458)
  Closing connections

calls /etc/samba/adduser and presto-chango, there is now an /etc/passwd entry

watertown$:x:5001:5000:Machine Account,,,:/tmp$:/bin/false

and a corresponding entry in /etc/samba/smbpasswd so that file is now

bcwhite:10001:C75CC291E06B5A54F7E62F36F8DB5AE6:1ADA7AD6BE20188D6F929F801B25443C:[U

  ]:LCT-3E56855C:
watertown$:5001:NO PASSWORDX:NO PASSWORDX:[NDW
   ]:LCT-3E56858D:

Now things go wrong. The rest of the log.smbd file shows

[2003/02/21 15:31:00, 2] smbd/reply.c:reply_special(92)
  netbios connect: name1=GRIFFON name2=WATERTOWN
[2003/02/21 15:31:00, 2] smbd/reply.c:reply_special(111)

[2003/02/21 15:31:03, 2] smbd/server.c:exit_server(458)
  Closing connections

I traced this around (using strace, log file, and source code) and determined
that samba is taking UID 0, looking it up in /etc/passwd to get the name
root and then trying to find root in /etc/samba/smbpasswd, but it doesn't
exist.

Next, I added a line to /etc/samba/smbpasswd of root for samba to find

root:0:CC596B7CE5FA59805ACDCD7C247FA83A:C119AEDBECEB895E7D9D0417A607:[UX
]:LCT-3E5683CF:

This password happens to match the real unix password for that machine.

Next time I try, the log file looks like

[2003/02/21 15:32:30, 2] smbd/reply.c:reply_special(92)
  netbios connect: name1=GRIFFON name2=WATERTOWN

[2003/02/21 15:32:36, 2] smbd/server.c:exit_server(458)
  Closing connections

The watertown$ account was recreated (I deleted it before running this
attempt) but I was not able to figure out why the password length is so
wrong. I am using shadow passwords here if that makes any difference.

Giving up on that line of thought, I decided to try just using the root
acount as the samba administrative account. That didn't work either:

Now when I try to connect to the domain, I get

[2003/02/21 15:36:12, 2] smbd/reply.c:reply_special(92)
  netbios connect: name1=GRIFFON name2=WATERTOWN

Re: [Samba] how do i umount a device busy ?

2003-02-21 Thread ascannel

I have mounted a win98 machine from a ML8.1 samba 2.2.2
The win98 machine, as all windows machines do, crashed on me.
Now i can't unmount the mounted folder, If i do it from cli, i get
umount usr/Cad12: device busy.

Try

#lsof /usr/Cad12

to find which process to kill.

When you try to unmount a filesystem and are denied with a Filesystem
Busy message, use lsof to determine what process is holding onto the
mountpoint. For example:

# /usr/sbin/lsof /mnt/cdrom

In this case, /mnt/cdrom is the mountpoint in question, and lsof will
tell you if any processes have opened any files on that particular
filesystem.

I have tried this post before, under a different Subject line.

I am trying to share CD images, or rather, I AM sharing CD images, but
run into trouble when many clients access the same mounted image. Can
anyone make any suggestions on the best smb.conf options to use in this
case.

Some shares need to be mapped by windows. Some work with network path.

[Samba] Samba PDC shared applications and a default start menuprofile

I have a network of Windows XP desktops, and a Samba PDC server, in an
ideal world i'd like to have single installations of applications on a
samba shared device, and also if possible a default start menu profile
with the applications already added... is such a setup possible? Right now
I'm using roaming profiles... (I think?) If it's possible could some smb.conf
examples or urls pointing to a head start be provided, that would be very
much appreciated..

Re: [Samba] XP needs ~30seconds to open network share

There is not anything similar in Win2k. If it is taking a long time to
connect then there is something else wrong. It could be dns problems or
something else. Try increasing the debug level for a while to see if
samba is reporting some problems.

Re: [Samba] XP needs ~30seconds to open network share

2003-02-21 Thread bkrusic
Hi,

When you have authentication (security) set to share
(basically no auth), then the browse looks to be fast.

When set it to user, it auths to the PDC before
letting you browse. Depending how you have your
server config'd will determine its speed of
authentication (server hardware, network speed,
etc...).

To me, this is normal. Perhaps I don't understand the
ish.

[Samba] Samba + LDAP segfaulting

2003-02-21 Thread John Madden
Hey,

I tried to set up samba to auth via LDAP for accessing shared home
directories. However, whenever a connection is made, samba segfaults.
Details follow:

Machine Spec: Sun E450, 2G RAM, Solaris 9
Samba 2.2.7a] -- all

Samba was compiled as follows:

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/samba --with-ldapsam make make
install

Following is an example of the problem:

Got a positive name query response from 136.201.105.4 ( 136.201.105.4 )

Attached are the following:

bugreport.log -- log.smbd showing samba startup, connection and segfault.

gdb.out -- gdb output of the segfault

where.out -- gdb where on the segfaulted pid

disass.out -- gdb disass of the last routine in samba before outside

If I can provide you with any more information, just ask and I'll try
and get it together.

Re: [Samba] Samba PDC shared applications and a default start menuprofile

2003-02-21 Thread Bob Crandell
If I understand your question correctly, the short answer is no. Windows programs
need to be installed in order for the drivers, fonts and registry settings
associated with that program to be correct.

As a test, share the hard drive on one computer. Create an icon on another computer
pointing to a program on the shared computer and try to run the program. It's no fun.

I hope this helps.

[Samba] Slow printers share

2003-02-21 Thread Christopher Dawson
Hi there,

I have set up a server to act as a PDC, file server and print server for a record
store I occasionally work at.

Everything is working fine, except browsing the printer share is painfully slow. It's
not really a problem, but if something is wrong I'd like to know what it is.

smb.conf contains

[global]
...
printing = cups
printcap = cups
...

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = no
public = yes
guest ok = yess
writable = no
printable = yes
valid users = smbuser
printer admin = root

[print$]
comment = Printer Drivers
path = /usr/local/samba/drivers
browseable = yes
guest ok = no
read only = yes
valid users = smbuser
write list = root

-

and the message in the samba log is:

[2003/02/22 16:56:39, 0] printing/print_cups.c:cups_printername_ok(291)
Unable to get printer status for ::{2227a280-3aea-1069-a2de-08002b30309d} -

[2003/02/22 16:56:39, 0] smbd/service.c:make_conneo
::{2227a280-3aea-1069-a2de-08002b30309d}

Im using version 2.2.3a12 (debian woody binary) and cups 1.1.14

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this? It looks like it's trying
to make a connection to a non-existent printer, but all the config files I know of
show only the one printer which works fine.

Thanks,

Chris

Modules

2003-02-21 Thread Jelmer Vernooij
090156 metze ctrlsoft: I think the modules stuff should not merged into 3_0 untill
we have discused how module loading should be finally done in samba

What I will be merging into 3_0 at first is just some basic helper
functions for the modules. it's currently only the smb_load_module()
function that we need, no matter what way the modules system will
work.

Here's an email I sent to the samba-team list about a week ago:

Hi,

There has been some discussion whether modules should be implicitly
loaded. Here's a list of possibilities and their (dis)advantages that
I'm aware of:

1. Load all modules when samba starts:
+ No performance loss whenever a client connects
- New modules are not loaded when smb.conf changes
+ No need for other subsystems to know about modules. They just
need to provide a smb_register_blah() function

2. Load all modules when a client connects
- Performance loss. We need to do dlopen(), dlsym(),
init_module() for all modules we eventually might need whenever a client
  connects.
+ If smb.conf changes, then every new client gets the new
  set of modules
- this won't be possible with nmbd
+ No need for other subsystems to know about
modules. They just need to provide a smb_register_blah() function

3. Load the modules whenever they're needed
+- Not all modules need to be loaded at
   fork(). Performance
will be better than in case (2) but worse
   than in case (1)
+ Changes to smb.conf are followed, even
  when smb.conf
changed after the smbd child fork()'ed
- Subsystems need to know about
  modules. Whenever they need to
use stuff from some module, they
  need to ensure that module
  is loaded.

I personally prefer either the second or the third method. There might
be a little bit performance loss in the second case (dlopen(), dlsym(),
init_module() calls). I don't think this will be very heavy, though.
Doing 2 dlopen() + dlsym() + init_module() + dlclose()'s
only took 5s on my Pentium 350 (These benchmarks aren't accurate because
the kernel will map the module in the memory here, but there will be
usually more then one smbd running which means the module would
also be in the memory in normal cases).

What do you think? Any suggestions?

we should name this parameter 'idmap backend' or something like that.

otherwise it will be bad to change this parameter because everyone has it

also we should seperate the idmap stuff from winbind,
so that we can use it in pdb and other subsystems of samba also.
Anyone else want to comment here? How much will the API need to change for

Metze is correct regarding the need to call it 'idmap backend', but as
to how this fits into things like pdb, it's a bit messy. Certainly smbd
could (should?) call the idmap directly, rather than making winbindd do
it over the socket.

Hi,

I don't think so.
I would try to run 2 sambas. Just put config stuff in different
directories, add IP alias and bind sambas to different IPs.
The only thing that can cause troubles is user mapping.
Eg. if you have the same user name in both domains, it will be mapped to
the same unix user id.
If you are not going to serve the same files for both domains it should
be no issue unless users have local/unix access to server.

Oh, and file locking. If the file is to be opened by users from two
domains I don't know what will happen.
I suppose:
locking will work
share modes - will be problem
oplocks - will be problem if system doesn't support kernel oplocks

[patch] configure.in bug setting authlibs

2003-02-21 Thread Green, Paul
AC_SEARCH_LIBS and AC_CHECK_LIB are used to find a function and then add its
library to the LIBS variable. The macros can deal with the fact that the
function might be missing, in a library, or available but not in any
library. The configure script, in both head and 3.0, uses these macros to
find the crypt function. In addition, configure uses the true clause to
set AUTHLIBS to hold the name of the library containing crypt. However,
it slips up and assumes that crypt, if found, must be in a library. On my
system, crypt is available but not in any library. Thus, configure
mistakenly sets AUTHLIBS=-lcrypt, but I don't have libcrypt.a, and so I die.

The attached patch corrects this, and removes what I think is a redundant
call to AC_SEARCH_LIBS. I did an extensive analysis, and AFAICT this patch
will work properly in all cases (with or without pam). But I would
appreciate another set of eyes looking it over.

Secondly, AC_SEARCH_LIBS and AC_CHECK_LIB are careful to prepend any new
library to the LIBS variable, whereas the old code dealing with AUTHLIBS
appends newly-discovered libraries. I changed the AUTHLIBS reference to
prepend as well. This may not matter now, but it seems good practice.

I have tested this patch on Stratus VOS and on Sun Solaris. On the Sun, I
tested it --with-pam and --without-pam. It behaved as I expected and desired
in all cases. I'd be grateful if it could be applied to HEAD and 3_0.

Sometimes, it's useful to be able to build (and install)
static libraries even on platforms that support shared

 libtool's aclocal.m4, to add --enable-shared and
--enable-static options to configure as a step in this

As the person who most recently touched this logic, I support such an
addition. Making this logic explicit and controllable would be a lot more
transparent than the current detective work (not that you could entirely
eliminate that however).

Win2K/XP, oplocks, and readahead

2003-02-21 Thread Steven French

The readahead that the Linux page manager does (see mm/readahead.c) seems
more sensible than what you are seeing with the Windows client - if you are
trying to excercise your server in this way you might try the clients using
the current version of Linux 2.5 kernel mounted with the cifs vfs or smbfs
to your Samba server - this is probably a much more efficient way to
exercise readahead using SMB clients. The algorithm used by the Linux page
manager for readahead is pretty interesting. Note (if writebehind is also
being tested) that in the current 2.5 kernel implementation of the cifs vfs
at the moment there is a call missing to flush at oplock break time and
also at sync time (flush is called properly at file close time) but this
should be fixed soon.

Re: Win2K/XP, oplocks, and readahead

2003-02-21 Thread Peter Godman
Hi there!

Although I am most focused on Windows clients since that is what our
customers use, this would be a great thing to try to attempt to exonerate
samba (not that much suspicion lies there anyway :)). It would be an
interesting data point. I can't believe that I can't find *any*
information about someone doing this sort of workload over CIFS with
Windows clients!

Thanks for the advice!

All of the current stuff (all the passdb modules and the dynrpc modules)
was returning an int. I'm not sure whether these functions should really
return an int, but this fixes the current situation. Is there any
rule about what functions should return NT_STATUS and what should
return BOOL or int?
