Re: [Samba] VFAT filesystem and large files

2007-09-22 Thread Frank Van Damme

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Hello
I have used samba for many years, and it worked great (thanks!).
Anyway, I recently decided to add a USB drive to the server.
Currently running 2.6.29.2 linux kernel, debian etch.
 samba version 3.0.24
 The USB drive is VFAT

I am able to write small files remotely to the USB drive (a few Kb, 10's of
 Kb) without a problem.
However, whenever I try to write something larger (like 1 Mb), the client
 machine freezes for a
while (about 1 minute or so), then returns an error saying the file could not
 be written.
However, if I look at the share under which the USB drive is mounted, a file
 exist, however, it is
 all 0's.
If I log onto the server with ssh, i can cp large files from ext3 drive to
 the VFAT USB drive
 without problems.

I found a post about this somewhere (I can't seem to find it again), which
 said this was a problem
with the VFAT code, not samba.

I was wondering, is this is the case? is the is a work-around? Basically,
is there a way to write
large files via samba to a VFAT USB drive?

Well, since it works via SSH, it would seem like a weird conclusion
the problem lies with the file system. Samba is only a userspace
program like cp.

That said: vfat means Pain! PAIN!! *PAIN!!!*

The design of the FAT files ystem is maybe 20 or 25 years old. It was
simple and perfect in the days when the average computer had 20 MB
hard drives with 50 files on them. It is not scalable. It is not
suitable for large file systems (and nowadays every new computer comes
with them). It is not suitable for large files. Besides, it's
unreliable and slow. If you're hooking the drive to a Samba server
anyway, just reformat it with a real file system, like ext3.

Re: [Samba] installing Samba as non-root user at work - please help.

2007-09-22 Thread Wolfgang Ratzka
Hi,

Speaking of ports, I specify ports of 1445 and 1139 for smdb, since I cannot
use a port below 1024 without having root access. Similarly, I attempt to
use higher port when I start nmdb.

Even if this would work, you would be stuck with the problem of
convincing your windows system to talk to these ports.

Given the information I've provided, and knowing that I do not have root
access, can anyone provide any information to at least steer me in the right
direction? I greatly appreciate your help.

Without root access you can pretty much give up on installing samba. If
your linux box allows ssh access, you might want to try something like
winscp to transfer your files from and to windows.

Regards,
Wolfgang Ratzka

[Samba] Samba Domain and Vista Profiles

2007-09-22 Thread Andrea Venturoli

Hello.
I've googled around, but I couldn't find anything really like my problem.
I've got a newtwork with a Samba PDC and BDC (both running 3.0.25 on
FreeBSD with ldapsam_compat backend). Everything works fine with Windows
2000/XP with roaming profiles in //PDC/user/profile (it even worked with
98 back when there was a few), but now I had to add a Vista Business
laptop. This joined the domain with no real troubles, but it won't
upload the user profile.
It creates //PDC/user/profile.V2 belonging to user and with 700
permissions, but never writes anything into this folder.
I tried playing with the registry, changing folder permissions, deleting
this folder (and let Windows recreate it or doing that manually), adding
a symlink to //PDC/user/profile and following a couple of other
suggestions I stumbled upon while googling, but came up to nothing.

Can anyone help? Is there something specific I can lookup in the logs?

 bye Thanks
av.

I was trying to keep the USB drive as FAT so that I could easily move it a

anyway, i found the reference (i don't know why i was having trouble last

Would you consider this a problem in Samba or in

IIRC our stance is that it's a problem with the
VFAT driver. This issue has some up before.

You could put ext2/3 on it and use this in Windows -
http://www.fs-driver.org/

I've never tested it though.

At one point a year or so ago, i mounted a ext2 filesystem on a win2K machine.
It did work.
However, the reason I asked about VFAT is I wanted to have a USB drive that
could be removed from
the samba server and used on (pretty much) any windows/linux computer
(without installing/modify
the recipient computer). VFAT gives me that (unfortunately).

Partition it in 2, put the driver on a small FAT partition and make the

Log:
Modify the provision script to take an additional argument: --server-role

This must be set to either 'domain controller', 'domain member' or 'standalone'.

The default for the provision now changes to 'standalone'.

This is not because Samba4 is particularlly useful in that mode, but
because we still want a positive sign from the administrator that we
should advertise as a DC.

We now do more to ensure the 'standalone' and 'member server'
provision output is reasonable, and try not to set odd things into the
database that only belong for the DC.
