WG: WG: [Samba] Strange!!! Clients only log on to samba bdc

2008-09-23 Thread Daniel Müller
Ist there no one concerning this behaviour?
I did my setup following the man pages.
There must be a serious bug in samba 3.031.

When I stop the BDC all clients log on to the PDC. And to my confusion
when I restarted the BDC today and made a testparm on both PDC and BDC
both showd role domain pdc --> Server role: ROLE_DOMAIN_PDC

Here my smb.confs:

PDC:

smb ports = 139
logon script = logon.bat
logon path = \\%L\%U\profile\%U
logon drive = S:

preferred master = Yes
domain master = Yes

running on the same
machine
BDC:

[global]
security=user

What happens if the BDC is unavailable (You could simulate this by
setting up iptables rules to drop all traffic from a given workstation)?

The way I understand it, workstations will use what ever DC is "closest"

to them. If the PDC is taking longer to respond or something then they
may consider the BDC to be the best choice.

Yes, you must setup DNS. The wiki is a bit out of date, the definitive
(and generated for your site) instructions are printed in the named.txt
generated by the provision.

Could someone please confirm if this is a bug? If I understand it correctly
"winbind use default domain = yes" is NOT working.

any hint or link to a documentation will be great help.

Re: [Samba] Printer driver problem in 3.0.28/31

On Tuesday 23 September 2008 07:59:58 am William Jojo wrote:

While I haven't seen ths specific issue before, it may be part of a class of
issues around drivers setting data associated with the printer instance on
the share. Often called the data blob. When the blob isn't set properly on
the share, drivers can malfunction in strange and unpleasant ways. My
suggestions are:

i. Install the driver locally and use the MS property page for the print
share to load the driver again. Set some of the data properties (eg. font or
duplexer). This may force the blob to get set.

ii. Alternatively, you could change your print architecture to use the
standard MS PostScript driver and Ghostscript to convert the print jobs to
the printer's language (PCL). The PostScript driver appears to avoid blob
related issues. A good description of this works can be found at:
http://www.enterprisenetworkingplanet.com/netsysm/article.php

Anyone know how to get that functionality back?

Except, after several hours, it was slow again! I believe there was
some issue with the Samba server retaining netbios names after the
REJECT is set, but then it eventually loses those due to the REJECT.
Once that happens "run as..." is once again slow, even though ports
137-139 are still REJECTing connections from the client machine.
This is a complex interaction, with what appears to be stored values
timing out - because restarting Samba may be needed to fix it (quickly)
even if the server has the firewall shut off. Rather than experimenting
with further firewall rules for the campus Winbind servers (I think) I
gave up and once again set ports 137-139 to ACCEPT for on campus
machines. Note that that alone did not immediately speed up "run
as...", but a subsequent restart of samba did, and it is still fast 14
hours later.

If one of the Samba developers could explain this messy interaction it
would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

You're seeing cifs/samba unix extension. The client
determines the mask according to the local umask. If you
really don't want this, try "unix extensions = no".

After an upgrade of the samba libraries on the ubuntu system it seems to work
better, but sometimes I still have a little misbehaving between the two
hosts, and data that is present on the main server is still not visible on
the remote host or vice-versa. Seems a problem of flushing, any idea about?

[Samba] Printer driver problem in 3.0.28/31

2008-09-23 Thread William Jojo

This occurs with Samba downloaded drivers of an installed printer.

When attempting to view the printer properties you receive the following error:

“Function address 0x2d04193 caused a protection fault. (exception code
0xc005) Some or all property page(s) may not be displayed.”

Followed by:

“The ‘’ printer driver is not installed on this computer. Some
printer properties will not be accessible unless you install the printer
driver. Do you want to install the driver now?”

This occurs with the following drivers, all version 61.074.561.43 (5/21/08):
HP LaserJet 5200 PCL5e
HP LaserJet 5200 PCL6
HP LaserJet 5200 PostScript

Anyone see this before?

[Samba] Problems with create and directory mode if mounted

2008-09-23 Thread Lukas Grässlin

Good evening,

I have a problem: I set up samba on my home server to share some files.
In my smb.conf I set to the shares "directory mode = 0775" and "create
mode = 0664". So new files will have 664 permissions and new dirs 775
permissions. If I access to the smb shares over my file explorer and
create files an dirs, they get the permissions on the server I set in
the smb.conf. So it works!
Now the problem: If I mount the share and create there files and dirs,
they _DO NOT_ get the permissions on the server they should have (The
perimssions I set in the smb.conf)

My mount command:

mount -t cifs -o username=user,password=pass,iocharset=utf8
//home-server/share /share

(mount -t smbfs doesn't work)

I hope you're able to understand my (probably) english ;-)

With kind regards,
Lukas

Are you planning to upgrade to a supported AIX level?

You can go to:

http://pware.hvcc.edu/

For latest Samba for AIX 5.2, 5.3 and 6.1 releases.
