Hello,

I have a working PDC with ldap-Backend under SUSE 10.2. Everything is
working fine, except 2 thing:

Can I change the sambaNTpassword and sambaLMpassword under Unix so that the
User can change the samba-Passwords and the Unix-Password with one single
command?

Can I automaticly connect the Home-Networkshare to a Network-Drive? Without
a Logon-Script?

smbpasswd -r against the localhost, together with ldap
passwd sync = yes.

 Can I automaticly connect the Home-Networkshare to a Network-Drive? Without

Yes, using ldap passwd sync (although it has been rather argumentative
on recent versions; not certain why).

 I don't think so.  Buy you can use policies (via POLEDIT.EXE) to
redirect My Documents transparently to the user's network home
directory.  I think this is covered in the Samba HOWTO/ByExample and you
can go to Google and search 'site:lists.samba.org folder redirection'
to get lots of references.

[Samba] WinXP altering user...

I have a set of PCs running WinXP and an Ubuntu Machine running Samba 3.0.28a.


I am trying to achieve that each user that sits @ a PC be able to loging with 
their credentials
and have their homes directory without login-logoff of each user at the station 
via the WinXP
loging-logout screen.

Any ideas??

I think ldap passwd sync changes also the unix_password when I change my
Password under Windows. 
But I want to change my sambaNTpassword and sambaLMpassword und Unix.
So, when I do a passwd horst I want to change the Unix_password AND the
sambaNTpassword and the sambaLMpassword 
For the user horst.

So, it doesn't matter where I change my password (unix or Windows), all my
passwords are changed.

[Samba] help - logon script

Hello everybody...

I need help about logon script, this time i want to change time format from 12 
format to 24 format on pc client.
I'm using samba 3.0.20 on PDC and the client is mostly win xp but we have pc 
with os win ME too.

I change from logon.exe that i put on every user directory which has script 
like this 

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\International]

iTime=1
sTimeFormat=HH:mm:ss  

But when i try to login the time format doesn't change it still in 12 format, 
i've tried many times but still the same. 

Is there any clue...

Correct.  Look at store dos attributes for complete attribute
support for both files and directories.  Much better solution.

Do you mean you included something like:

  regedit /s x:\path\to\set24.reg

to your login script and it is not working?
Did you try to run the line manualy to see if it works?

[Samba] Can Windows be forced to supply new logon credentials?

I'm new at this - perhaps my terminology is not correct. I've been trying to
set up 3 shares on a samba server (latest version supported on Ubuntu 8.04),
and I'm having mixed success in obtaining the behavior I desire:

My server, cayenne, is in the DOCS workgroup, and has these shares:
PUBLIC - read-only by anyone, writable by 'docadmin' members
SUBMIT - the common place for all employees to submit drafts.
RELEASED - the official company-private documents. read-only by employees,
read/write by docadmin

I would LIKE anyone poking around on the network neighborhood to see the
server and see the names of the shares. If the user is not an employee then
he/she should be able to peruse the PUBLIC share deeper, but not the other
two. If the user is a valid employee then he/she should be able peruse the
SUBMIT and RELEASED shares in accordance with their privileges granted by
whether or not they are document administrators.

So I'm trying to test various settings in smb.conf, and it finally hit me
that my biggest problem is that Windows XP is caching successful past logons
to connect to the samba server, and I can't seem to make it clear this magic
cache. I have a bunch of test users on the samba system, and these are
members of various groups that should grant them public, employee, or
docadmin privileges. According to the logs, the initial connections are
being made with an old successful user/password I used yesterday (not even
my real windows ID).

How can I have Samba force connections to be from a new user/password
combination? Or is there some way to have Windows XP Professional stop
caching/sending old credentials? (At least, that's what I think the problem
is here.)

your english is kind of broken.  you don't want the windows logon screen 
for the user to log into on boot?  if so, don't have the xp computers 
joined to the domain and have the users access their home directory by 
typing in my computer's address bar, \\server\homes

[Samba] Printing from Windows with Kyocera Drivers - which one to use ?

I just ordered a new Kyocera FS-1030 - no more inkjets - and am currently
preparing the clients and the server for the new printer. Installing the
PPDs on the server was easy but I am unsure which client driver to use. On
the server I am using samba-3.0.9-2.6 and cups-1.1.20-108.31. My current
plan is to install a Local Raw Printer in Cups and then let the clients
print with the windows printer drivers supplied by Kyocera. Kyocera uses
three kinds of drivers,  KX, PCL and KPDL. Which one should I use if I plan
to print with the setup described ? As a general question I have always
wondered if the connection between a client and printer in such a setting is
always only unidirectional or if there is a way to get back status messages
from the printer back to the client with SAMBA ? Is there a way to enable
the clients to delete entries from the printer queue ?

[Samba] Files on samba share not updated quickly enough

I have set up a samba share between 2 linux machines, where the server
updates a file (latest.txt, 200bytes) at 15 Hz. My problem is that the
client does not get the latest version of this file latest.txt when it
reads this file every 100ms or so. It seems to be updating the file
once a second. For instance, when I check for the contents of the file
latest.txt every 100ms, the same contents are printed for 10 checks
although the actual file has changed almost every time I check it. It
seems to be a cache problem (I really don't need cache - I would like
to turn it off if it is not a problem, but I don't know how to do it.
Any help will be appreciated.

My machine configuration is Linux Ubuntu 8.04 with samba 3.0.28a. The
smb.conf file is as follows.

  workgroup = SENTIENT
  interfaces = xx.xx.xx.xx
  hosts allow = ALL
  encrypt passwords = true

[ramdisk]
  path = /fs/ram0

alternatives.

I am a longtime Samba 3 sysadmin, and I am trying to revisit an old problem.

For a while, I have been using Heimdal Kerberos and Samba 3 together
using OpenLDAP as the shared backend.  For Linux users, this is perfect:
they log in once using Kerberos and they can access all of their
applications - IMAP, SMTP, Intranet, SVN, calendar - using their single
ticket.  For Windows users, I installed MIT Kerberos on the client
machines, and they log into the Samba domain, and then log into the
Kerberos Realm using the MIT client.  However, they can't access SVN
using a non-Windows ticket, and the calendar doesn't work in Lightning.

This is getting on enough people's nerves that I need to go to single
sign on.  Is Samba4 Alpha 7 sufficiently along to support this
environment?  All of our servers are Linux based, and I need to support
Kerberos through Apache (intranet, svn, calendar) and Dovecot (IMAP,
SMTP auth).

Are there any good How-to's to ease me into Samba 4?

[Samba] Samba logs fill up disk with inotify errors, smbd 100% CPU

One of the server I maintain has Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server with samba 
3.0.28a. Kernel version is 2.6.24-16-server. The samba setup for this 
server is a workgroup environment, with user level security.
At least once a week, sometimes more often, the server becomes 
unavailable because the system disk is full. It appears that the samba 
logs are the problem. Although the samba configuration file indicates 
that logs should be limited to 1000K, one of the machine specific logs 
(/var/log/samba/log.machine_xyz.old) grows to the point of entirely 
filling the disk (140 GB of log). The log file contains endless 
repetitions of the same message:

smbd/notify_inotify.c:inotify_handler(240) No data on inotify fd?!
At the same time, the smbd process for the user related to the faulty 
machine log uses 100% CPU, and must be stopped with kill -9. Note that 
it not always the same machine that creates the problem.
Because some users are never affecting the system, we tried to identify 
if the origin of the problem was linked to a specific data manipulation 
by some of the 'bad' users, but we are still clueless.
I found some info in this list with similarities to my problem where the 
suggestion is to include notify:inotify = false in [global] to see if

I've just done this, so I will have to wait and see.

Oooo yay a registry question. A few things to keep in mind, starting 
with the most obvious (some, I realize, you may already know...but I'm 
gonna paint with a wide brush).


1. The _CURRENT_USER hive of the registry is just that, per user. 
Changes to one user will not effect others.

But when i try to login the time format doesn't change
If you set the script ONLY for your users and then YOU login with your 
own account that does not have the script, then it makes sense that your 
time would not change.


2. You do not need to leave these changes in the logon script. Once the 
change is actually made for each user, it should stick. Once it is 
working you can leave it there for a few weeks (until everyone has 
logged in) and then remove it.


3. You can modify  [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\International] 
with your preferred settings, and all NEW users will inherit them in 
their HKCU.


4. Some settings in various versions of Windows are VERY hard to change 
via scripts. For example in WinXP, changing whether the Start menu 
hides, is locked, has quick launch, and etc is rather difficult. The 
reason is that Windows XP reads the settings into explorer.exe from the 
user's HKCU before your logon script can work, and writes them back at 
logoff; rendering scripts useless. (not to mention that all of those 
settings are globbed into one long binary string (50 characters or so) 
representing all of the settings).


I just tested the time settings on my Win XP Pro system and manual 
changes seem to be retained, and the time format did change when I 
logged back on...just be aware that Windows may be working against you 
(depending on the version and what you are trying to change, etc).


5. You can mount a user's HKCU as a subkey of HKLM even when they are 
logged off. Open HKLM and go to File- load hive. Choose the user's 
ntuser.dat file (usually C:\documents and settings\USERNAME\ntuser.dat). 
This can be invaluable for investingating things or for changing 
settings like the ones I described in #4. (In fact, deciphering the long 
binary string for the start menu settings and writing a program to 
enumerate all the users, mount their ntuser.dat, and make the change 
when they are not logged in is the only way I've seen #4 done.)


Other than that, try what others have suggested here. Make sure the time 
format is actually changing when you merge the .reg manually or manually 
edit the registry. Also note that there is the command line REG command 
that can be used to work with individual keys, should your command line 
merge method never work.

I'm having a case here where MS Access 2007 databases get corrupted while
trying to open with samba 3.3.2. 

I'm not sure wether this problem is related to the one with MS Word/excel
2007 with 3.3.0 and 3.3.1.

Cause you're saying that both the server and the client are running
Linux, I assume you're using cifs vfs on the client side to mount
the remote share.
Note that also the cifs client is doing inode data caching.
You can disable this by using the mount option directio.

Be aware of the side-effects - see 'man mount.cifs' for
further details, also available online:

get Samba working with my AD environment. No matter what I try I cannot seem
to get it working. Mind you, I can authenticate to the server if I type
wbinfo -a username. I was also successful in joining it to AD. My problem is
when I try to access a share, say Home, I get a message asking for a
user/pass which it rejects. Here is my smb.conf:

What is in your /etc/nsswitch.conf file?  Have you enabled winbind
resolution for passwd and group?

And I am on the hosts allow network. If I remove the valid users, I can
still access the share; I just cannot write to it.

'winbind separator = +' might cause problems with group membership.
Server role: ROLE_DOMAIN_MEMBER
Press enter to see a dump of your service definitions

Thanks for the replies guys. My nsswitch.conf has the following:

passwd: compat winbind
group:  compat winbind
shadow: compat winbind

And I am on the hosts allow network. If I remove the valid users, I can
still access the share; I just cannot write to it.

Output of testparm:

Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf
Processing section [admin]
Processing section [tmp]
Loaded services file OK.
'winbind separator = +' might cause problems with group membership.
Server role: ROLE_DOMAIN_MEMBER
Press enter to see a dump of your service definitions

And here are some of the things I've seen in the logs. Let me know if you
need to see any other logs.

[2009/03/17] 00:55:28 3] winbindd/winbindd_misc.c:winbindd_domain_info(654)
 [5888]: domain_info [ADSERVER]
[2009/03/17] 00:55:28 3] winbindd/winbindd_misc.c:winbindd_ping(733)

[2009/03/17] 00:55:28 3] winbindd/winbindd_misc.c:winbindd_lookkupname(102)
 [5888]: lookupname ADSERVER+admin

Now I've tried some things since to see if I can get it working. Since AD
authentication is working, I logged in with my admin user and created a home
directory. Permissions for the directory are 755, with admin:domain admins
for ownership. I figured, well if I have the same user logged in on my Linux
machine that I have on my XP machine, I should be able to read/write right?
Well when I go to the admin share on my XP machine, I can see everything
fine. I can even see that domain permissions are being applied. However I am
still unable to write!

I think I'm making some progress.. I can now write to the directory.

If I chown admin:domain admins admin I can then write to the directory on
the XP side. I can see domain permissions, but cannot edit them.

However in doing this, I can no longer access the directory as my user on
the Linux side. 

I tried creating a new group called 'samba' and added my admin user, along
with my XP user. I kept the owner as admin. Now I can access the folder on
the Linux side, but not the XP. *frustration!*
