[Samba] Samba with DNS
When the Samba4 for gets released this year, how is DNS to be setup, is there any special requirements, will samba setup dns for you when using active directory? How does that whole part work? I have seen that kerberos will be built in. Also I have to say, I saw the Samba Team Blog 3 and I really like how they will rename the services to be more suited to thier task. It is great. Keep up with the great work. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: https://lists.samba.org/mailman/options/samba
[Samba] Re: profiles migrate
There is a tool I found that will join the computer to the new domain and then allow you to change the sid of the user profile to the new sid of the the new domain. Email me and I will email it to you. I do not remember where I got it from other wise I would have sent you a link. david.grudek at anixter.comI fixed the email so I will not get spam. [Samba] Re: samba PDC -- really stuck here
Under your smb.conf file change the logon path = \\%N\profiles\%u to logon path = and this will have it use the local machine. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: https://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Adding linux users to linux server with samba
Is there a way to add the linux user to the system on the fly while you run smbpasswd -a and even set the password so you do not have to do two steps or to have adduser or useradd add a user to smb by default with the same password if created. Many of the users in a small business do not remember to add both and then get frustrated when they can't use the system to find it is because they did not add users to both places. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Samba 4
Does any one know the status of Samba 4. I was reading about it on the Samba web site and it sounds really nice. I am not complaining, just wondering how it is doing, if they are able to make it smaller with the web configuration built into the smbd. It will be so good. Samba 3, I could not believe how much better it got so when 4 comes out it should just be out of this world. I also read that they plan to release a 3.5 which will include as much from 4 as they can. Any info would be great. I just can't get enough when hearing about someone that is helping people leave Microsoft. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] Re: Samba freezing network
My server is a pdc on debian linux and is running with a windows 2000 member server that is hosting software for a flower shop. The windows servers and all the workstations are freezing about twice an hour and stay froze for about 2-5 minutes. They do not lock up at the same time but usually after the windows server locks they lock because they are trying to gather data from this flower software. If I remove the network cable from the debian pdc it does not lock up any more. The windows server and workstations have been there for at least a year and the debian box was just introduced then they started having the problems. I replaced the network card after letting the two servers ping back and forth and there were errors, after I replaced the network card in the debian machine there were no more errors but the windows box still locks up. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Samba freezing network
I have testing debian with samba and while the linux server is on the network the other systems on the network lock up and freeze for several minutes then un freeze. After I remove the debian box from the network it does not freeze any of the other computers on the network. [Samba] No Roaming profiles local only
On a windows server there is a local profile by default unless you tell it to have a roaming profile. I want to have the same thing happen. All the machines say that they used the local copy then a couple seconds later it says it could not copy to the server and any changes will not be saved. I know that I could let it be a roaming and switch it to a local later but in a larger enterprise that is too much work. I tried this in my smb.conf on debian testing with samba 3.0 logon home = logon path = I used to use this on redhat 8 with samba 2.28a before and it worked. and logon home = c:\documents and settings\%u logon path = c:\documents and settings\%u I saw this on a web site and so I tried it but it did not work. I bought the book called The official Samba 3 howto and reference guide. What a great book but it says in there if you want to disable roaming profiles, there are three ways to do it. Do it in the smb.conf file but does not show how just says to do it. Then it says to do it in the windows registry but this is not practical to do to 100 workstations. Or to leave as roaming and then switch to local which is also not practical to do to 100 workstations. There should be a way to just make it do local on the fly as it creates the profile as windows does it. I would like to know how your smb.conf file should look in order to accomplish this. [Samba] winbind and trusted domains
I have a samba server on mandrake running the newest version of samba. Users are in domain a and the computer accounts are in domain b. The samba server is in domain b but I would like for the samba server in b to look at the user list in domain a which has a trust relationship already set up in NT. The same way windows does it now. I setup winbind and samba. I put allow trusted domains = yes and all the other entries needed. I would also like for the local logon of Unix to use the samba authentication as well. [Samba] samba with acl's, acl's in but not working
I have installed Redhat 8.0 with the Sgi xfs rpm kernel running. I also recompiled the srpm from Redhat's ftp site with acl support. I have a partition called data that was formatted in xfs. I can do a getfacl and it works on the directories and seems to be working. I am trying to change the permission's from a windows machine logged in as root but nothing seems to work. When I set certain permission's they don't seem to be working right. Regular users can get into a folder that I put as only root having access to. I want to put a folder called home under /data (/data/home) and use this for the home directories of the windows users and lock it down with acl's the way windows does it. I put read and list permission's on the home for all users and I want to put full access to only that user and root on each users directory. The company wants all files to reside within one partition for backup purposes. I have tried to ask them just to use the Linux home directories but the said it was causing problems when the users were accidentally delete the Linux user files so they would prefer to do it in this /data dir. [Samba] Compiling samba with srpm's
I am new to linux and samba. I have looked everywhere for a good place that has instructions at a newbie level on how to use srpms to get samba to work with acl's. I have got the xfs filesystem to work. I think that I need to recompile samba to make it work with acl's, but do I also need the kernel to be patched since the filesystem supports the acl's natively? and can someone point me to the direction of a good howto that is for complete dummies. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] password syncing
I am looking for a way to sync passwords in samba and linux. I know samba changes your unix password threw the password sync feature in samba but is there a way to change your samba password if a user changes their linux password automatically? -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] nmbd in redhat 8.0
If I enable wins support = yes I start smbd it starts smb nmb. When I restart the service it says that there is no nmb service at 10045 running. When I do a ps -aux, you can still see the service running. They will keep building up until I manually delete them. [Samba] samba acl's
I have been playing with samba for a short time. I am not a programmer but a I have some questions on if acls within samba are possible, regardless of acl's in the file system or kernel. In samba now, you can have read list or write list and say this user and/or group has write and/or this user and/or group has read only. This is a scaled down version of an acl. What if they created a folder called acl's and had one file called no access, one file called read, write, change, and full. An entry inside these files could look similar to: /data = @domain admin, john, steve /data/accounting = @domain admin, @accounting, bob if these entries were in the change file then samba would restrict him accordingly. I have been trying to get acl's to work and it has been difficult to work. I have been thinking that maybe samba could do this for us without having to count on other pieces of software. I am only asking so please dont take this the wrong way. If it is possible I would like to help make it happen. I am not sure how I can help because I am not a programmer, but if there is anything I will be willing to pitch in. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Samba 3.0 help
Is there a place that has all the options that you can add to the smb.conf file in verion 3. How to set up as a domain controller and how the acl's work. [Samba] NT ACL's
I have been playing with samba for about 3 months. I have not been able to find a way to setup acl's efficiently. I would like to be able to set permissions for one person one way and three others all with different permissions. Then to also add 4 to 5 groups with all with different permissions the same way you would in windows. I am new to linux so I have a hard time fully understanding the Linux permissions.
