Establishing an Extensible Directory Service with OpenLDAP - Part 1
August 4th, 2005

by Dustin A. Dortch

In this series we will look into the use of OpenLDAP as a core service in a
network infrastructure. Our key concerns will be extensibility, security,
reliability, and ease of use. Directories are becoming common place is network
infrastructures. With Microsoft Active Directory and Novell eDirectory/NDS use
of LDAP to provide their core services, we have further validation of that
fact. Another positive fact is that Samba has great LDAP integration and is
often used for single sign-on (SSO) purposes.

[Samba] The Next Guide Will Be...

The Next Guide Will Be...
August 3rd, 2005

The next guide on Sambadmin will about creating a great LDAP
infrastructure. I have been disappointed that I have only
received two comments about what the next guide should be,
especially since the site has had over 500 visitors in the
past two days.

I came to this decision after reading my posts. I stated that
the core motivation behind all of this is LDAP. Sure, Samba IS
great, but we can have file/print sharing on a Windows server.
What really takes the cake is to have tightly integrated
services, and this is made possible by LDAP.

So, if you have any comments you would like to make about what
a completely integrated directory solution should include, do
not hesitate to comment. Here is what I will list, for
starters.

Next Guide
August 1, 2005

All Sambadmin patrons. We would like to know what the next guide for Sambadmin
should be. Please post your comments to this message.

Some examples could be, how to build a directory for Samba, with integration of
FreeRadius. Or how to setup Point and Print. You tell me. I will keep comments
open for 1 week. Any ideas received over five affirmations will be put on a
list, prioritized by the highest requested.

Attention all Samba users. A new community help site for Samba Administrators
has been created. It is starting slowly, but will hopefully contain more
information and an online forum in the coming time.

The site is call Sambadmin, and is found at http://www.sambadmin.com/

The intent of the site is to provide valuable information to Samba Admins
regarding, Samba and integrated packages, and any tools that would be useful
for a Samba Admin, including both UNIX-type and Windows tools.
