[Samba] FYI: Samba 3.6.6 crash -solved

2012-06-28 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

I could solve the problem performing the following steps:
unintstall all samba rpm's.
Download the same rpm using wget
Install the rpm using rpm -Uhf ...

I user "zypper in samba3.." before (pointing to the same
source).

However it's working now.

[Samba] samba 3.6.4 + office 2010 -> deny write 0x3019f

2012-05-30 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

we just noticed the following problem:

User wants to open a file on a group share.
Nobody else is currently using the file. Open is possible,
saving the file is denied

DENY_WRITE 0x3019f RDWR EXCLUSIVE+BATCH

Using office 2003 it works.
Using 2007/2010 we get this fault.

Do we have to change the settings for the share, or what can we do
to avoid this ?

OS (Server): Novell SLES 11SP1 (x86_64), samba 3.6.4-44 (sernet rpm)

Re: [Samba] Update Samba PDC - win7 stop working

Hi,

thanks for the hints.

Am 29.03.2012 10:13, schrieb Daniel Müller:

You need to run samba 3.5 or samba 3.6 from sernet.

So 3.4 from Novell will *never* work ?
After running the update of the OS we simply have to use the sernet rpm

To get your Win 7 and W2008 Server in the domain you need to do some registry
entries.
See: http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Windows7

We are already running the WIN7 machines
with the registry entries. On the old installation everything is fine.

If you are running a virtual machine I suggest to move from SLES to centos

Good Luck

Betreff: [Samba] Update Samba PDC - win7 stop working

Hi,

we have tried to update our rather old samba PDC. The system is running on
Novell SLES 10 SP2 with the samba RPM from Sernet.
We stopped everything and updated (booting from DVD, using offline update) the
machine to SLES 11 SP1 started samba and everything was fine - expect all WIN 7
and W2008XX Server.
Those clients were not able to use the domain.
XP and Vista (32 and 64) worked without any problems. After 2h of searching we
switched back to the old Installation, to get everything back to work.
The PDC is a virtual machine. so using the snapshot worked very well ;)

However I do not have the log files anymore :(

OLD
OSSamba ver
SLES 10 SP2 (i586)samba3-3.3.4-39

NEW
OSSamba ver
SLES 11 SP1 (i586)samba-3.4.3

*) Has anybody seen this kind of behavior ?
(Doing samba update -> Win7 is not able to use the domain anymore)

*) Is there a way to test those steps ? The pdc is using our LDAP Server, so we
can not simply clone the pdc and test everything in a separate network...
(or we have to clone a couple of server ...)

*) When we update the PDC and we get everything working - which version is
recommended (3.4.X // 3.5.X. // 3.6.X ) ?

[Samba] GDI Printer problem

2008-02-21 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

we have a new printer here (OKI C5650). It's a GDI printer
attached to our cups server. I installed the windows driver
as root on the print share without any problems.

However it's not working. When a user maps the printer
only a message appears "printing not possible".

So I looked at the printserver and compared everything with
a local printer on my XP notebook and found the following:

aruba:~ # rpcclient -U'_pkoch%PW' ancona -c 'getprinter C5650 2'
drivername:[OKI C5650]
printprocessor:[OPHJPP3] printprocessor:[winprint]
attributes:[0xa40] attributes:[0x1848]
   ^^^^^^
WIN XP samba

I used tdbtool to change the printprocessor, but it's
still not working. How can I change the attributes entry,
or locate it ?

Also I found that the printprocessor file seem's NOT to
be included. On my laptop it's installed under
Windows\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\ophjpp3.dll

Can I add this somehow to the driver on the printserver ?

Any help is welcome !

[Samba] Samba won't connect to new users ...

2007-12-18 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

we have the following problem:
From time to time (1 week -> 6 weeks) new user (computer
just started) are unable to connect to our file server,
BUT old connections are still working without any problems.

The log file is currently not very helpful.
Any idea, where to look ?

Samba running on Novell SLES9 SP3 (AMD64),
   samba3-3.0.25b-33 (Sernet)

A simple "smb restart" is solving the problem, but I would
prefer a stable system

[Samba] File access error

Hi,

we have updated our samba version from
3.0.20-something (SuSE packages) to
3.0.25b-33 (SerNet " " )
a few weeks ago.

Since we have done this update, some people are reporting
the following behavior. They open an M$-Access file and
after a few hours a messages is coming up, network connection error.
A reopen works without any fault. No data are lost.

What's the reason for this behavior ?
Can we change it ?
Any idea ?

Thanks!

[Samba] access to share is not working using smb://

2007-09-18 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

it's not possible for users running
linux on the private laptop to get direct access to their own shares
(Home-drives).

So if a user is running linux on his private laptop, open konqueror,
enter smb://FILESERVER/USERNAME
an error occurs, "share does not exist". Clicking on a visible share
forces the authorization dialog to appear. Then everything is working.
But how can it force it ?

smb://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/USERNAME

is also not working

The client computer are not members in the domain and all user have
local accounts.

[Samba] Samba suddenly stops working

2007-06-20 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

we have 2 file server (SuSE SLES 9 SP3) running
samba-3.0.20b-3.4 . We have now the situation that one sometime
both server stops working. All smbd process are still visible,
smbstatus is working and so on, but all connected users are unable
to access the shares. Also new connection are not possible.
Currently only a restart of samba solves the problem.
/var/log/warn & /var/log/messeages is showing nothing.

How can we get more information about this behavior ?
Which debug level might help. We have currently no idea where
to start the debugging and we are also not sure if a simple
update to the current version will help (but we will try it
the next time).

Any idea or help ?

[Samba] Problem with MacOSX and SAMBA

2007-06-07 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

our Mac users have sometimes trouble with samba shares.
Those users are not able for a certain time ( 0.5 -20 sec)
to read or write to files.
Some reported error messages like "read only file" or
file not found.

Windows users (XP) have some also slow access, but no further
problems.

Our file system is also used from or linux cluster (192CPU),
but we are using a GFS to share the load. I'm not sure if
the gfs or ldap or something else causes the delay in the file
i/o. Error messages did not appear in the samba (normal) log.

Any idea ?

File services: SLES 9 SP3; X4100 (AMD64) samba-3.0.20b-3.4
(has to be updated - i know :)
Running on a GFS (Quantum Stornext)

Clients : XP SP2 and all patches (few problems, slow response)
Mac OSX 10.3 / 10.4 (sometimes major problems)

[Samba] MAC OSX-Users - samba PDC - passwd

2007-02-19 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

we have just moved our old NT4 domain to some linux

Everything is working well, but ...

Setting passwords seems to be tricky. For
Windows eyerything is working great. All passwords

For linux I've written a little wrapper to call smbpasswd
and this is also working withou any problems.

But what to do for MAC OSX users ?

[Samba] Upgrade question NT4 -> Samba 3 PDC

Hi,

we want to replace our old NT4 PDC with a samba 3 PDC

We have already 2 fileserver and a print server currently

Do we have to change the configuration and add the ldap parameter
at those servers ?

Or what is the best practice in this case ?

Re: [Samba] ACL issue with Samba 2.0.23d + GFS

2006-12-14 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

as far as I know GFS only supports posix acl. So only user:group:other.
Everything else are extended acl which are not supported.

Have you tested, if the acl rules are working on the unix side ?

Bye, Peer

Dex Chen schrieb:

I build with ACL support and installed samba 2.0.23d on RedHat EL 2.6.9.
It runs fine. But, I ran into an issue with ACL support. Here is the
detail:
I set up a cifs share (gfs_cifs) which is on Linux GFS (see the smb.conf
below), and mount it on a XP box. Then I try to change the permission of
the dir through Windows native security tab. When I apply the changes
(click on OK/Apply button), "Unable to save permission changes ...
Access is denied" error message is popped up.

But, I was able to using "setfacl" command on linux to modify the acl of
dir.

In addition, I was able to do exactly same thing for a share (ext_cifs)
on ext3 file system.

At this point, it seems to me this problem has something to do with
combination of samba and GFS.

I tried all other options in smb.conf, and nothing is help.

Any help on this would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Dex

[Samba] samba and cups printing

2006-12-11 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

I'll tried to configure a few printing queues, but without any success.
We want to add a dedicated monochrome queue to one color system.

Our print server is a SuSE 9.1 running the following software:
cups-1.1.20-108.31
cups-devel-1.1.20-108.31
cups-drivers-1.1.20-60
cups-drivers-stp-1.1.20-60
cups-SUSE-ppds-dat-1.1.20-98
cups-client-1.1.20-108.31
cups-libs-1.1.20-108.31
samba-doc-3.0.2a-51
samba-3.0.20-0.1
samba-client-3.0.20-0.1

So I created the following printer:

 ^
Info A_2_013_IR6800C (color queue)
Location Building A, floor 2, room 013
DeviceURI tea4cups://lpd://141.5.16.68/print
State Idle
Accepting Yes
JobSheets none none
QuotaPeriod 0
PageLimit 0
KLimit 0

#
  ^
# Info A_2_013_IR6800M black&white queue !!
# Location Building A, floor 2, room 013
# DeviceURI tea4cups://lpd://141.5.16.68/print
# State Idle
# Accepting Yes
# JobSheets none none
# QuotaPeriod 0
# PageLimit 0
# KLimit 0
#

Also two ppd files are installed and working. From the cups
point of view everything seems to be correct. One is printing
in color, the other queue in black and white.
Ok, restart of samba brings up two printers - but both we the same name
and the same discription !
I'll tried to install the ppd (using cupsaddsmb), but everything looks
like before. Also when I switch the print driver using the windows gui,
the printer appears with the name of the driver ! Ok, I used the name of
the printer, when I installed the driver, but why should be the print
queue be renamed when the driver is changed ?

Any idea what's going wrong here ?

Hi,

Have a look at Samba 3 by Example.
http://us4.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/

Chapter 9 tells you how to do this. You may also want to look at Chapter 5.
This has info. on using LDAP with Samba 3.

You can migrate all the user and computer info. from your NT 4.0 PDC
straight to Samba. When you shutdown your NT box and activate your Samba
box, the users/client machines will not know the difference.

Re: [Samba] GFS and samba

2006-09-28 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

just as a remark: we are using also a cluster filesystem together
with samba and nfs (StorNEXT). In the beginning we had some problem
with NFS (kernel panic), caused by the file locking.

However, we are using one SAMBA server for the home shares and
another for the group shares. Two addional nodes are exporting
everything using NFS.

Therefore we do not have a concurrent situation of two samba server
exporting the same stuff. For NFS it works! We have 6 NFS file server
working on the same file base. But I never tested what will happen, when
to samba server are starting to access the same file on different server.

My suggestion would be, it CAN work, if the GFS is correctly locking
the file, if one once write access to a file.

However, a cluster solution for samba would be MUCH better!

Bye,
Peer

Hello,

We have two Fedora 5 Servers clustered with GFS. We installed samba
and exported the same shares in both of them.
All went fine at first, with people accessing to theirs own files and
so, but for some programs (minitab, matlab, ...) people need to access
the same file at once. Then samba begins to fail and clients hang. In
order to fix samba is necessary to restart the service. We've tried to
put the shares in a filesystem without GFS and all goes well, people
can access the same file without problems simultaneously.

This certainly looks weird. If the files are only ever accessed from
one node, then it *should* work, but I don't know if this is something
that has been tested with GFS specifically.

Serious damage starts to happen when we have Samba accessing the same
files on both nodes, because all the state information isn't shared
between nodes. (Proposals for a scalable solution for Samba to do this
are due on samba-technical in the next week).

If you are only using one node for Samba, it should be the same as a
local non-cluster filesystem, so perhaps raise this with the GFS
developers.

[Samba] various problems

2006-04-13 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

just moved from our old HP machine running samba 2.2.x to a linux
box running SuSE SLES 9 with samba.
Using utf-8 on unix and under windows seem's to work well,
a few questions are still open:

From model runs some users have files like:
hinterp.d01.2005-06-10_00:00:00
hinterp.d01.2005-06-10_00:10:00
...

Under Windows those files are displayed in dos style.
8 characters like "HBS9J8~2" and so on.
If i rename "hinterp.d01.2005-06-10_00:10:00"
into hinterp.d01.2005-06-10_00_10_00
or hinterp.d01.2005-06-10_00.10.00

everything is fine. We have not set anything special in the global
sektion. testparm -v shows:

[global]
dos charset = CP850
unix charset = UTF-8
display charset = LOCALE

Second point:
I had to reboot one of the server. After the reboot the server
was not in the domain. I had to join the domain before the
people could use it again.
What's wrong here ?

Thanks,
Peer

[Samba] Problem with samba3 and groups

2006-03-28 Thread Dr.Peer-Joachim Koch

Hi,

we have just moved our file services from an old
hpux system to a new linux system. I used
the old config as a template for the new smb.conf.
Most things are working, but not everything.
The main problem is in the moment, that samba seem's
to use the primary group only for accessing file and folders.

To explain what I mean:

we have a share called ABC, valid group AG_X
within this folder there is a subfolder DEF, owned
by AG_Z and the permissions 770 (open only for group members).
This is working perfectly under linux itself, but
samba only pop up a message access denied.

[BSY_2]
comment = Datenbereich der Abteilung Heimann - AG_Heimann2
path = /Net/Groups/BSY/BSY_2
valid users = @AG_Heimann,@AG_DV
force group = AG_Heimann
create mask = 01664
force directory mode = 01774
read only = No

The same setting worked without any problems under hpux, but
with samba 2.x.

Any hint is welcome !!!
