Re: [Samba] sharing a printer
I solved my CUPS printing issues by installing an HP Jet-DirectX 3-port Print Server. Setup was quick, easy and I was printing from all three printers in less than 20 minutes. When I map the share to /media and try the client again, I can see the cdrom folder, but not public. I have also tried scp and ftp using /media/public, and they both work fine, so it doesn't seem like a common case of poor permission settings. Re: [Samba] Printer Issue with Access XP
Cyrille, Personally.. I would say scrap Samba printing as a printing solution between linux/unix and XP and install a dedicated print server. HP, Linksys and D-Link all make very good, reliable solutions that are very easy to setup and configure. This will save you a great deal of time, energy and headaches. Just my opinion, mind you. We have already tried setting 'default devmode = yes' on the printer within smb.conf, but without luck. We have found that we can set the default printer on the workstation to a locally stored printer definition and then start the Access Report Designer, and print to the Samba printer by changing the printer at the time of print, but this is a rather long way around. [Samba] Samba.. not worth a f*** for printing
I have had it.. I have come to the butt-ugly conclusion that samba is nothing more than a clusterf**k for cross platform printing. I have been trying for 2 years to talk between my windows and linux printers to no avail. I am convinced now that despite my numerous requests from this group, even, that there isn't a sole who knows how to get samba printing to work. They have now become infected. The virus is accessing the address book and sending out spew-o-grams on a routine basis. If you look at the McAfee website, this virus that is making the rounds has the potential to create a 'backdoor' for hackers. [Samba] Printers and other stuff
Well.. okay. Only printers. I am still having issues (pains, actually) getting my pritner shares to work from either Linux OR Windows 2000. One of the things I see here is that the majority of users use CUPS as the printing daemon. From my previous Unix experieince, I have gravitated towards BSD as my printing daemon. Could this be the reason I am having trouble Does Samba work better with CUPS as opposed to BSD? Inquiring minds want to know. [Samba] Samba and W2K printer issues
I posted this query a couple of days ago and received no responses. SInce that time, some other info has come to light that I thought would be useful to helping to solve this porblem. My network consists of a firewall machine networked with a SuSE 7.2 workstation and a Windows 2000 workstation. My smb.conf file is below: # Samba config file created using SWAT # from 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1) # Date: 2003/11/24 00:43:32 # Global parameters [global] workgroup = PENGUINIX security = user browsable = yes guest account = guest encrypt passwords = yes ;wins service = yes wins support = Yes path = /smb/Delorme local master = yes [joec] comment = Personal network share path = /smb/joec read only = No [peggyc] comment = Personal network share path = /smb/peggyc read only = No [pr1] printable = yes printcap name = /etc/printcap print command = /usr/bin/lpr -P%p -r %s ;printer driver = dj1 printer = dj1 printing = BSD path = /var/tmp valid users = joec peggyc root administrator min print space = 2000 I can see dj1 (linux printer - HP640c) from the Windows desktop. When I try to print to it (i.e. test page), I receive an error spooling the document to the printer. I am connecting the printer through an TCP/IP port. I have checked permissions on the w2k side, and everything appears to be setup to allow printing. When I check the status of the spool on the linux side, the lock file is being generated, and the stauts shows the printer as being ready and available for printing. [Samba] smbprint
While trying to configure my *nix box to print to windows, I discovered my samba build does not have the smbprint utility. I saw no option in the configure/make script to build with the smprint utility. Is there an option that will build this tool? Thanks! [Samba] smbmount and credentials file
I have a small LAN: SuSE 7.2 with Samba 3.0 and a W2K box. What I can do: I can create shares from the W2K box that make files from the Linux box visible. I can also manually mount (using % smbmount ... ) from the command line as root. Here is where I run into problems. The only way I can mount a partition via smbmount is if I use the username=user%passwd option. If I attempt to setup a .smbpw file, I am prompted for the password of the user I am attempting to create the mountpoint for. For example: % smbmount //w2k_srv/fred /smb/fred -o credentials=/root/.smbpw_fred,uid-fred,pid=fred,fmask=664,dmask=775 Password: Upon entring the password for user fred, the mount point is created and the file are accessible. The .smbpw_fred file looks like this: fred%passwd Likewise, if I attempt to edit the /etc/fstab entry with the following line: //w2k_srv/fred/smb/fred smbfs username=fred%passwd, uid=fred, gid=fred, fmask=664, dmask=775 0 0 I get an error that the fstab has an error at the line that references the samba mount point. Any ideas here? This is the last thing i need to get samba fully functional on my LAN. Everything else has been a piece of cake! [Samba] adding network printer in W2K
I have my network printer configured under Samba. When I logon to W2K, I can see the printer, but I am unable to open the printer to spool files. I get the message that I must install the pritner driver in order for it to work. ANy suggestions? [Samba] Samba and printers and god knows what else...
Okay.. this is REALLY starting to p*** me off here! Attached is my smb.conf file: # Samba config file created using SWAT # from 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1) # Date: 2003/11/21 18:09:25 # Global parameters [global] workgroup = PENGUINIX guest account = guest wins support = Yes [joec] comment = Personal network share path = /home/joec/smb_share read only = No [peggyc] comment = Personal network share path = /home/peggyc/smb_share read only = No [printer1] path = /var/spool/lp1 hosts allow = 192.168.2.101 min print space = 2000 printable = Yes printing = bsd print command = /usr/bin/lpr -P%p -r %s I can see my (printer/disk) shares on linux land and from w2k land. When I go to my w2k box, I can see the printer (printer1), and I have the correct printer drivers installed. When I double click on the icon to try a test page, I get the following error: printer1 on Clyde Access Denied, unable to connect When I attmept to test through smbclient, I get: smb: \ print quay.txt Error opening local file quay.txt The previous fix sent to me to check the Adobe drivers had no effect. This is simply an access/permissions issue. I am using BSD as my printer spool mechanism. Any suggestions?
