[Samba] Problem After Upgrade - NT_STATUS_FILE_IS_A_DIRECTORY
I'm running Samba 3.4.7 on Ubuntu 10.04. This is a recent upgrade and we've starting experience a sporadic problem after this upgrade. When users are browsing through Windows Explorer they sometimes run across folders that appear as unassociated files. This requires the user to click the 'Refresh' button in Windows Explorer to properly see the folders. The files and folders are hosted on our Ubuntu server and shared with Samba and accessed on the Windows clients through various mapped network drives. The files on the Ubuntu server shared through Samba are actually MOUNTED onto the Ubuntu server from a Windows XP server that is hosting the files locally. These mounted files and folders are what is giving the users trouble in seeing folders correctly. We have other files hosted locally on the Ubuntu server and shared through Samba, but these are NOT giving us problems when browsing them through Windows Explorer. The only files that are giving us this problem are the mounted files. I've noticed that every time I come across a list of folders in Windows Explorers that look like unassociated files, I get the following error messages in /var/log/samba/log.smbd : --- error packet at smbd/nttrans.c(563) cmd=162 (SMBntcreateX) NT_STATUS_OBJECT_PATH_NOT_FOUND [2010/07/06 15:56:24, 3] smbd/process.c:1459(process_smb) [2010/07/06 15:56:24, 3] smbd/error.c:60(error_packet_set) error packet at smbd/nttrans.c(563) cmd=162 (SMBntcreateX) NT_STATUS_FILE_IS_A_DIRECTORY --- The mounting of the files is done through /etc/fstab with CIFS as the mount type. The only solution I can think of would be to move the mounted files to the Ubuntu server so they are hosted locally. Like I said, we are already doing this with some directories, and we are not experiencing a problem browsing through those. If anyone has any ideas I would be glad to know. Thanks. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: https://lists.samba.org/mailman/options/samba
Re: [Samba] Problem After Upgrade - NT_STATUS_FILE_IS_A_DIRECTORY
This is truly a bad idea. That XP share should be mounted by the workstations just like the server shares. Move the data to the server, or use the XP box as a server to directly serve those who need the data on it. Cheers, TMS III Why is this a bad idea? We've been running this setup for a few years now and its been working fine until we upgraded. The XP box only allows 10 user limit for shares, so that's why we mounted it to the Ubuntu server and shared it with Samba instead of having to pay for Windows Server license. The problem with simply moving the files over to the Ubuntu server is that the files on the XP box are stored on a RAID array that comes with a controller card whose driver is really only designed to be run on Windows, not Linux. I'd have to setup mdadm on Ubuntu, which I've done before and was not impressed. The Windows RAID system we have is much more easier to maintain. I don't want to get off topic here, I just want to know why Samba is giving me trouble browsing these mounted directories. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: https://lists.samba.org/mailman/options/samba
Re: [Samba] Problem After Upgrade - NT_STATUS_FILE_IS_A_DIRECTORY
Is this a *real* RAID controller or a 'fake' (BIOS/Software/MB) RAID controller? If it is a real controller are you sure there is no Linux driver for it? (Esp. since you are using Ubuntu!) If it is a software/BIOS/MB RAID controller the performance is going to be really bad -- these controllers are really only meant for home systems and not really for true servers. This is an Addonics controller card that uses Silicon Image 3124 chip. We have a RAID tower housing 12 hard drives. I'd have to setup mdadm on Ubuntu, which I've done before and was not impressed. The Windows RAID system we have is much more easier to maintain. Oh, you mean you have to actually use your keyboard? How dreadfull... Not really. The GUI-based software for this controller card provides a lot of configuration options and documentation, something that is not so intuitive in mdadm. Its not just about using a dreadful keyboard, be real. Do you mean to say that the files local to the Ubuntu *server* are not on a RAID array? No. They are not as important and the data can be quickly restored from backups. This sort of 'game' (mounting files from one 'server' on another server and then re-exporting them), is not *specific* to Samba. See what happens when you try to NFS export file systems mounted as nfs file systems (although I expect nfsd/mountd would refuse to let you do that in the first place). There are several problems: It tends to confuse the server(s). File serving software (Samba, NFSD, etc.) really expect the data they are serving to be local (yes, using a NAS or something like that is a little different) and are written to optimal to work that way. It causes lots of network traffic: every I/O operation causes two batches of network traffic and implies two sets of network channels: one set between the machine with the physical disks (the XP box) and the 'server' (the Ubuntu box), and a *second* set of network channels between the 'server' (the Ubuntu box) and the final client(s) (the client MS-Windows machine(s)). If this is on one physical network (if the 'server' (the Ubuntu box) only has one NIC), then the you have lots of network collisions, which means your network thoughput will truely suck (eg network timeouts, dropped/lost packets, etc.). I expect that 'before' you 'got by' by luck. What might be happening now is that some fix to Samba is biting you or maybe you are getting network I/O errors (timeouts?) because of what I described in the paragraph above. What you are doing is not really going to work in the long term. You either need to: 1) Buy a real, supported RAID card for the Ubuntu system. 2) Live with mdadm 3) Pay for licenses for the XP system. I agree with this and will probably have to begin doing one of the above. I was just hoping someone would know an exact cause and fix for my situation without having to redo infrastructure. [Samba] Folders Not Displayed Correctly on XP Clients
When browsing through our samba shares, some of the folders within the shares will show up as unassociated files in Windows Explorer. This prevents the folders from being opened. A way to fix this has been to click on 'Refresh' in the Windows Explorer context menu when right-clicking on a white space. Then the folders will show up correctly and can be opened. I've recently upgraded samba to version 3.4.7 on Ubuntu 10.04 and it was after this upgrade that this problem began to surface. I'm currently running samba as a primary domain controller on Ubuntu 8.04. I am going to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 onto a new hard drive and install that distribution's samba package. This will replace my current installation. I don't plan on changing the configuration file (smb.conf). The configuration file from my current samba installation will be copied to the new installation. How will my Window clients that are joined to the current domain handle this? Re: [Samba] * Reloading /etc/samba/smb.conf smbd only
Posts #25 and #26 from the ubuntu thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1140094page=3) were written by me. From what I'm experiencing and noticing in the logs, I have to agree that this problem is caused (or at least initiated) by dhclient. Post #20 describes adding /dev/null to the reload call making the last line of the file /etc/dhcp3/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/samba look like this: [ -x /etc/init.d/samba ] /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d samba reload /dev/null This would suppress the reload call and therefore cause the message * Reloading /etc/samba/smb.conf smbd only (which is found in /etc/init.d/samba) not to appear. However, I don't think suppressing the reload call to prevent /etc/init.d/samba from reloading and therefore causing the message not to appear is hardly the real solution. For some reason the message comes up right on the command line output every ~5 minutes, which is frustrating when someone is trying to use the command line and this message keeps getting in the way. Do we have to somehow force this message to output to a log file instead of the screen??? On Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 7:56 AM, Bruce Borahbabo...@gmail.com wrote: Please read the Ubuntu Forums thread. not sure if this is a samba problem because i have only just ran across this on a fresh install of ubuntu 9.04 server... whats happening is that the message * Reloading /etc/samba/smb.conf smbd only is occurring every 3-5 minutes right no the command line. the only software i selected for install during the OS installation is samba and ssh. as soon as the install finished and i logged in for the first time this message started occurring. i then decided to run all software upgrades but this had no effect on this issue. anyone have suggestions? -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: https://lists.samba.org/mailman/options/samba

Re: [Samba] roaming user profiles do not transfer all settings - *SOLVED*
the reason why the wallpaper was not following the roaming profile is because i was not using bitmaps... check out this post: http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2005-November/114588.html i am also quoting the last sentence on this web page: http://computertips.toups.info/roaming/RoamingXPPro.htm There appears to be a problem where .jpg wallpaper does not appear to roam properly. However, the registry settings are being updated properly. Usually, if you go to the desktop tab after right clicking for properties on the desktop, you will find the proper wallpaper file is actually selected. Clicking OK will cause it to display. i have tested this and can verify the problem. it would be nice if someone could figure out a little hack to this to make it work properly. Re: [Samba] roaming user profiles do not transfer all settings
the profile is set as roaming under the My Computer - Advanced - User Profiles Settings. there are no local user accounts on either client except the the local administrator. this is what i've done so far: i've created a temporary domain user account and logged on with that account after joining the client machine to the domain with the local administrator account. i assigned a new wallpaper and placed some files on the desktop and then logged off. i then joined another client machine with its local administrator account and then logged on with the same temporary domain user account i created above. at this point i expected to see the wallpaper and files i had assigned and created on the first client machine. the files were present, BUT the wallpaper was not kept. i have a feeling that ntuser.dat is not being properly updated. ls -l command on ntuser.dat shows the updated time when i log off the client, but there are also other files like ntuser.ini,ntuser.dat.LOG,ntuser.pol that are also updated. i want to look at the ntuser.dat.LOG but it is binary... also i get a desktop.ini file in the startup folder everytime i logon. i have a feeling this can be fixed easily, but this is my first time playing and testing with roaming profiles and so far it has not been easy for me at all. anyone have any more clues On Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 10:56 AM, Adam Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: it NTUSER.DAT is newer on those computers, or is set to be a local profile under the user settings, it will load it from the computer versus what is on the server. delete the profiles on the computer (after backing them up to c:\temp) and then try again Leandro Tracchia wrote: i've also copied the profile through my computer properties. still i don't get the same profiles when logging in from different computers. they are not correct because the wallpaper, shortcuts, and windows styles on (client2) are different from the profile on the machine (client1) that i joined the domain with. the profile on client1 is the profile that should have been copied to the server and also that profile is roaming and should appear on all other machines. it is my understanding that the user should be able to log on to any machine and see his EXACT settings every time. problem solved. i had to add 127.0.0.1 to the interfaces list of smb.conf. this is because i had set bind interfaces only = yes. the manpage makes mention of smbpasswd not working properly if bind interfaces only is set and the network address 127.0.0.1 is not added to the interfaces parameter. i guess this also applies to correct functionality of the net rpc command, although the man page makes no mention of this and i'm not very knowledgeable to explain to you how it does apply. but it worked for me. thanks for your help john. Thanks for everyone's help. # net getlocalsid LEANDRO -d 10 [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/debug.c:debug_dump_status(391) INFO: Current debug levels: all: True/10 tdb: False/0 printdrivers: False/0 lanman: False/0 smb: False/0 rpc_parse: False/0 rpc_srv: False/0 rpc_cli: False/0 passdb: False/0 sam: False/0 auth: False/0 winbind: False/0 vfs: False/0 idmap: False/0 quota: False/0 acls: False/0 locking: False/0 msdfs: False/0 dmapi: False/0 [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 3] param/loadparm.c:lp_load(4953) lp_load: refreshing parameters [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 3] param/loadparm.c:init_globals(1418) Initialising global parameters [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 3] param/params.c:pm_process(572) params.c:pm_process() - Processing configuration file /etc/samba/smb.conf [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 3] param/loadparm.c:do_section(3695) Processing section [global] doing parameter workgroup = AAC.local doing parameter server string = %h server doing parameter dns proxy = no doing parameter log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m doing parameter max log size = 1000 doing parameter syslog = 0 doing parameter panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d doing parameter encrypt passwords = true doing parameter passdb backend = tdbsam doing parameter obey pam restrictions = yes doing parameter invalid users = root doing parameter passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u doing parameter passwd chat = *Enter\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* . doing parameter socket options = TCP_NODELAY [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 4] param/loadparm.c:lp_load(4984) pm_process() returned Yes [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 7] param/loadparm.c:lp_servicenumber(5120) lp_servicenumber: couldn't find homes [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 10] param/loadparm.c:set_server_role(4229) set_server_role: role = ROLE_STANDALONE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(105) Attempting to register new charset UCS-2LE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(113) Registered charset UCS-2LE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(105) Attempting to register new charset UTF-16LE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(113) Registered charset UTF-16LE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(105) Attempting to register new charset UCS-2BE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(113) Registered charset UCS-2BE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(105) Attempting to register new charset UTF-16BE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(113) Registered charset UTF-16BE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(105) Attempting to register new charset UTF8 [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(113) Registered charset UTF8 [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(105) Attempting to register new charset UTF-8 [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(113) Registered charset UTF-8 [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(105) Attempting to register new charset ASCII [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(113) Registered charset ASCII [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(105) Attempting to register new charset 646 [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(113) Registered charset 646 [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(105) Attempting to register new charset ISO-8859-1 [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(113) Registered charset ISO-8859-1 [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(105) Attempting to register new charset UCS2-HEX [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/iconv.c:smb_register_charset(113) Registered charset UCS2-HEX [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/charcnv.c:charset_name(81) Substituting charset 'UTF-8' for LOCALE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/charcnv.c:charset_name(81) Substituting charset 'UTF-8' for LOCALE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/charcnv.c:charset_name(81) Substituting charset 'UTF-8' for LOCALE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/charcnv.c:charset_name(81) Substituting charset 'UTF-8' for LOCALE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/charcnv.c:charset_name(81) Substituting charset 'UTF-8' for LOCALE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/charcnv.c:charset_name(81) Substituting charset 'UTF-8' for LOCALE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/charcnv.c:charset_name(81) Substituting charset 'UTF-8' for LOCALE [2007/09/10 09:17:02, 5] lib/charcnv.c:charset_name(81) Substituting charset 'UTF-8' for
[Samba] PDC (can't fetch domain SID)
os: debian etch 4.0 samba: 3.025c i am reading through the how-to (using samba 3rd ed), freely available btw at http://book.opensourceproject.org.cn/sysadmin/samba/sambao3rd/ i am interested in setting up a samba pdc for a good dozen windows xp pro clients. (i somehow could not wake up from the windows 2003 sbs nightmare). i have been able to join my debian box to the local windows domain and share files back and forth between the debian box and a windows xp pro laptop. this procedure was fairly straight forward and i had no problems. samba was flawless in this regard. chapter 9 of the how-to explains how to set up samba as a pdc. i have done everything step by step and everything has worked fine, but now i am finally officially stumped at section 9.2.1.1. here is my output. # net getlocalsid SID for domain AACLINUX is: S-1-5-21-1918599669-337121707-3998352069 (AACLINUX is the hostname of the debian box) #net getlocalsid LEANDRO Can't fetch domain SID for name: LEANDRO (LEANDRO is my new domain name set in: smb.conf) smb.conf: [global] netbios name = aaclinux workgroup = LEANDRO security = user encrypt passwords = yes enable privileges = yes ## enable PDC functionality domain master = yes domain logons = yes os level = 33 preferred master = yes local master = yes [public] path = /usr/local/samba/public read only = no [netlogon] comment = Net Logon service path = /usr/local/samba/netlogon read only = yes write list = +ntadmin i have other forum posts with similar problems but none have produced real results. perhaps this one will be different. here are some of the other forum posts i have looked at and attempted to apply their solutions with no success.. http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2005-September/110749.html http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2003-November/001157.html http://sysadminforum.com/t109897.html http://groups.google.com/group/linux.samba/browse_thread/thread/59a253f3f02f9ef7/d05ea8d3ab317f7e%23d05ea8d3ab317f7e http://groups.google.com/group/linux.samba/browse_thread/thread/4b61b34c769570e2/e9c6469f64ea2877?lnk=gstq=can%27t+fetch+sidrnum=1#e9c6469f64ea2877 if anyone needs more information from me please tell me. i will post everything i can. thank you, LRT -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: https://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
