[Samba] Understanding re-sahring a NFS filesystem in Samba

2013-06-04 Thread Marcio Merlone

Greetings,

I made some search on Google regarding this matter and found many
diverse information, some dated back to 2004, and would like to update
and clarify this issue. The question is: what's the problem on
re-sharing a NFS filesystem with Samba?.

The only way I found to share a NFS mount point on Samba without
apparent problem is to disable file locking on NFS mount by using the
nolock option on fstab. It seems to work fine, but some say it is a
receipt to disaster, while others says it is good to go.

As I understand, if a shared NFS filesystem is mounted on two different
servers with nolock option, I will probably run in troubles with
concurrent file access.

FreeNAS --NFS-nolock--Client1
--NFS-nolock--Client2

Similarly, if a shared NFS filesystem, mounted on a second server, is
shared by this second server via Samba, I may come accross the same
problem due to simultaneous file access without lock, one by the NFS
server and other by Samba server.

FreeNAS --NFS-nolock-- Server --smbd-- Client

If such filesystem is used for write operations only by Samba and no one
else, neither the NFS server or other processes on Samba server, would
the nolock option on NFS or the re-sharing by Samba be an issue? What
are the expected problems one could find in such setup and what cares
should be taken to use this and still have a good night sleep? Is there
an alternative/preferred setup?

Would love to hear your considerations and technical expertise. For
reference, here is the respective question I made on FreeNAS forums:

http://forums.freenas.org/showthread.php?13037-FreeNAS-NFS-share-mounted-on-Ubuntu-samba-serverp=61416#post61416

Best regards.

One of my customers has been running such a setup where a linux server
re-exports an NFS share from another linux box for the past 2 years
with about one hundred users. Never had a glitch. The only other
accesses to this NFS share are rsync'ing them to another server for
backup.

Are they using oplocks?

Just a thought - you say its an intermittent problem and you have 2 DCs,
right? It isn't just going wrong when it uses one server but not the other
to log on is it? Try forcing it to log on to each server individually (eg
unplug ethernet on each as you log on for a moment when no-one is using
 network)

I don't like the look of the backslash in your [netlogon] admin users
either. Why not just leave the entire line out?

thanks about the quickly answer. All my servers are over red hat (I'll

network has DHCP and DNS over red hat too. DHCP sends the wins server; that

Hi people, I have a problem and I need so much of your help.

I have a login script in \\server1\netlogon\script.bat (on my PDC and BDC)
that runs net use commands to map some shares in time of the logon.
This login tries to map share in another server (samba member of domain
 \\server2).

So, I put the result at a log and appears these lines:

 System error 1311 has occurred.
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon
 request.

This is a recurrent problem, but neither always this happens. Sometimes,
everything is wonderful and works very well mapping all shares, but is
 unstable.

 --**--**

Windows clients have this problem regardless of the type of PDC/BDC you
have (Windows or Samba). The problem is that Windows is generally ready to
let people log in before all of the network services are ready and as such
 people can't log in.

Are your servers on static IPs? Also, what kind of DNS/DHCP server do you
 have?

 This will help in troubleshooting.

 TMason

 Because of the setting:

The question is how to put all my printers within a share. Because of
the current configuration, all printers are appearing at \\server-name\
(the first level of shares).
I'd like to make something like: \\server-name\CompanyPrinters\ , so
below this directory all printers should be located.

Anybody?

Thanks again,

[Samba] List windows clients/machines in network list (win 7)

2012-10-10 Thread Marcio Oli
People,

some of the machines of my network aren't been listed in (Windows
Explorer - Network icon).
I made a research and I found the following:
- try to activate some services:
SSDP Discovery;
UPnP Device Host;
Function Discovery Resource Publication.

Note: this situation happens with machines that were joined to the domain
and with others that weren't added to domain yet.
I would like to see every windows clients listed in Network icon. I
activated these services, but it keeps not working.

I think my samba DCs are OK, less the following log message, that I'm not
sure if it's normal:

1. [2012/10/10 14:40:52.257211, 0]
nmbd/nmbd_workgroupdb.c:281(dump_workgroups)
2.  dump_workgroups()
3. dump workgroup on subnet 10.0.5.5: netmask= 255.255.248.0:
4.WORKGROUP(2) current master browser = UNKNOWN
5.NetworkDomain (1) current master browser = PDC 1
6.PDC1 40849b3b (PDC 1 )
7.BDC1 40809b3b (BDC 1 )
...

8. [2012/10/10 14:40:52.257344, 0]
nmbd/nmbd_workgroupdb.c:281(dump_workgroups)
9.dump_workgroups()
10. dump workgroup on subnet UNICAST_SUBNET: netmask= 10.0.5.5:
11.NetworkDomain (1) current master browser = UNKNOWN
12.PDC-SEDE1 40819b3b (PDC 1 )

Maybe there is a problem between lines 5 and 11 at above lines. But I don't
understand the syntax of this log.
Is my network without a current master browser?
Anybody could help me with these 2 troubles?

Thanks,

I suppose that you are using the version of redhat but I think that you
should trust the output of testparm because it use the same code base as
daemons for parsing and deducting default values.

Also testparm by default won't show the values that are by default as
lmhosts wins host bcast is the default it's not shown, use testparm -v to
 have the full list.

[Samba] Name Resolve Order : parameter of smb.conf with testparm

2012-10-04 Thread Marcio Oli
I am writing this letter and I hope that I'll have answers about the
generation of smb.conf by the way of smb.conf.master with testparm command.
Like is described on page 5 of Samba3-HOWTO.pdf.

The situation is:
- The manual of smb.conf says that the default value of the parameter “name
resolve order” is “lmhosts host wins bcast”, but when I type the command
like:

# testparm -s smb.conf.master smb.conf

the following occurs: the smb.conf generated by this command don't
have the parameter “name resolve order” expressed, but in my
smb.conf.master is configured like:
…
name resolve order = lmhosts wins host bcast
...
At this situation, I think should appear the parameter because it is not a
default value. The order is different of default in smb.conf.master.

Thus, I would like to know if the documentation of samba is incorrect about
this configuration or testparm is with a problem to create the smb.conf.

The profiles share is important to have romaing profiles, i.e. user
profiles get saved on the server when the user logoff the workstation,
so it can be loaded on another machine, if the user changes workstation.
This is the source of slow-down login/logoff: the profile must be
transfered from and to the server.

If you disable this, obviously you loose also the feature. Disable if
you don't need it. This share is not meant for the admin to fool around
user's files, but to provide a feature.

Folder redirection is a mean to off-load this data transit between
server x workstation, pointing potentially 'fat' folders outside the
user profile, so they don't get touched on login/logout. Meaningless if
you disable profiles share.

Issue the command 'man rsync' and take a look what the -a switch does.

It is working well. After the initial setup, everything can be managed from

Functions I've tried so far:
- Group policy objects
- Adding / removing users
- Roaming profiles
- DNS updates

Essentially the main functions you would expect from a Win 2k3 server will

[Samba] Moving away from samba 3.0.28

2009-10-01 Thread Marcio Merlone

Hi all,

We use samba 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.8 (Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS) as our company's DC
and fileserver with LDAP authentication against an OpenLDAP
2.4.9-0ubuntu0.8.04.3. We are having some trouble regarding filesystem
permissions and ACL administration, so we plan to move on to a newer
version of samba. We'd love to move to an AD solution, but it seems
samba4 is not yet ready for production (is franky - samba3/4?).

Easy of administration is a plus here, so if I could avoid compiling
from scratch would be nice, though it can be done. That means I'd
preferer a pre-compiled .deb package I could install, but if it is not
feasable I can use the sources and compile it myself.

My question is, what samba version you guys recommend for a small
company with simple needs - just single-domained DC or AD and fileserver
auth'ing on LDAP, no need for print support? Samba 3.3, 3.4 or franky
3/4? Can I use franky and have a good night sleep?

Thanks for sharing your experience, tips and thoughts.

[Samba] Problem after upgrade to 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.8

Hi all,

I have just upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS to samba 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.8.

Translating from portuguese, the error means Windows cannot access the

the item. But I can copy, move, delete, write, etc with no problem.
Just can't run it.

[Samba] vfs_recycle directory_mode and recycle docs

Hello all,

I have a share with the following conf:

   mode = KEEP_DIRECTORIES|VERSIONS|TOUCH

   recycle:exclude =
*.tmp|*.temp|*.o|*.obj|~$*|*.~??|*.log|*.trace|*.mp3|*.MP3|*.wma|*.WMA

   recycle:excludedir = /tmp|/temp|/cache
   recycle:directory_mode = 0777
   recycle:keeptree = yes

Some confs I got from the official samba docs at:
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba3-HOWTO/VFS.html#id2644353

Others I got from forums around the internet, like the 'mode' and
commented 'config-file' above. One question and one problem:

1. The question: I could not find documentation for 'mode' or
'config-file' neither for recycle nor vfs. Where can I find it? The
above url has none.

2. The problem: when a user deletes a file from some folder, I get this
folder created on .recycle with permissions 0700, no matter the
recycle:directory_mode = 0777 config above. This forbids the next user
who tries to delete a file from the same folder. How can I make the
recycle create the tree with 0777 permission?

Best regards and sorry if this has already been discussed before. Thanks
for any hint, docs, whatever.

It is a known bug, I found on a bugzilla somewhere. The bug consists
that the booting process needs the ldap server before it gets started.
So, the workaround, for now, is to have a slave ldap server which you
can use at least for booting. In my /etc/ldap.conf I have:

# grep host /etc/ldap.conf
host 127.0.0.1 192.168.0.2

Obviously, 192.168.0.2 is another server on the network which is a slave
for localhost. This way the booting process will try localhost and then
192.168.0.2 and boots ok. I am not sure even if it really needs to be a
real slave, but I happen to have a real slave on my net, so I had no
problem.

Great idea! As a user, I'd like to suggest you the following features/tools:

- Ease to add/manage users and machines;
- Ease to manage network workstations (software and hardware
inventory/deployment, group policies, etc);
- Ease to manage workstations configs (proxy config on browsers, mail
settings, logon scripts, enable/disable/manage windows firewall, vnc
service and passwords, etc);

Regarding machine inventory, have you seen SpiceWorks? I ask because you
may have two approaches:

1: a samba focused distro.
2: a network management focused distro. Using samba.

The main difficulty on maintaining a samba server is the
network/workstations management , which you have to handle with 3rd
party tools and scripts (like wpkg), which are not well integrated
(because you had to integrate/tweak it yourself). A distro made to
address all those issues will be a killer product on the market. Better
yet if built on top of Ubuntu server.

Sorry if this is not the right place to this. :) Please provide some
site or mail list to keep an eye on your progress.

[Samba] BDC + LDAP

2005-08-24 Thread Marcio Luciano Donada

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Good Moring list
I already possess PDC + LDAP. Today the necessity appeared to possess
a BDC, but users in base LDAP would like to legalize all, and mine
configuracao follows below:

[global]
~workgroup = AURORA
~netbios name = fly
~server string = Marcio(CPD)
~passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://121.1.16.245
~#username map = /usr/local/etc/smbusers
~printcap name = cups
~logon drive = H:
~logon path = \\%L\%U\profiles
~logon home = \\%L\%U
~logon script = logon.bat
~domain logons = Yes
~os level = 33
~preferred master = Yes
~domain master = No
~passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://121.1.16.245
~ldap passwd sync = yes
~ldap delete dn = Yes
~ldap admin dn = cn=suporte,dc=auroraalimentos,dc=com,dc=br
~ldap suffix = dc=auroraalimentos,dc=com,dc=br
~ldap machine suffix = ou=Computadores
~ldap user suffix = ou=Usuarios
~ldap group suffix = ou=Grupos
~ldap idmap suffix = ou=Idmap
~idmap backend = ldap:ldap://121.1.16.245
~idmap uid = 1-2
~idmap gid = 1-2
~printing = cups

[netlogon]
~comment = Servico de Logon em Rede [ startup.bat ]
~path = /home/samba/netlogon
~browseable = No
~locking = No
~read only = Yes

[home]
~comment = Diretorio Pessoal %U, %u
~path = /home/%U
~read only = No
~valid users = %U
~force user = %U
~create mask = 0664
~directory mask = 0775
~writeable = Yes
~browseable = No

# the default is to use the user's home directory
[profiles]
~comment = Perfil %U
~path = /home/samba/profiles
~read only = No
~create mask = 0600
~directory mask = 0700
~browseable = No
~guest ok = Yes
~profile acls = Yes
~csc policy = disable
~# next line is a great way to secure the profiles
~force user = %U
~# next line allows administrator to access all profiles
~valid users = %U

[dados]
~comment = Suporte Backup
~path = /backup/suporte
~writable = Yes

[Musicas]
~comment = Musicas Marcio
~path = /backup/dados
~valid users = marcio
~writable = Yes

Now the problem and that nao I obtain to legalize user in the base
ldap, in log occurs the following one:

[2005/08/24 11:51:49, 1] auth/auth_util.c:make_server_info_sam(840)
~ User mdonada in passdb, but getpwnam() fails!

~  check_sam_security: make_server_info_sam() failed with
'NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER'
[2005/08/24 11:51:56, 1] auth/auth_util.c:make_server_info_sam(840)

Some ideas?
Thank's

basicaly depends this on your vpn-connection speed
maybe it would be easier to syncronize the profiles on both servers with
rsync

what is content of those profiles ?
recently I modified domain policy and after that, for example,
Application Data, My Documents and Desktop are not moving across
network anymore. They are put on network shares, but they are not
anymore
parts of roaming profile.

 The bandwidth isnt that good
Outlook PST is the main problem

Outlook doesn't have to be part of roaming profile also.
for example, you can move outlook.pst out of roaming profile
(on \\server\username\outlook-folder) and after you start Outlook,
it will not find Outlook.pst ... and it will kindly ask You where
can it find outlook.pst

yes, that file is damn big, but data transfer across network are not
that
big when it is used.

Application Data, My Documents and Desktop are not moving across
network anymore. They are put on network shares, but they are not
  anymore
  parts of roaming profile.

   The bandwidth isnt that good
Outlook PST is the main problem

Outlook doesn't have to be part of roaming profile also.
for example, you can move outlook.pst out of roaming profile
(on \\server\username\outlook-folder) and after you start Outlook,
it will not find Outlook.pst ... and it will kindly ask You where
  can it find outlook.pst

yes, that file is damn big, but data transfer across network are not
  that
  big when it is used.

   Hi,

it should work...but think about the sync for the profiles that you
  have on
   each server all profiles

Hi,

basicaly depends this on your vpn-connection speed
maybe it would be easier to syncronize the profiles on both servers
  with
rsync
