[Samba] Understanding re-sahring a NFS filesystem in Samba
Greetings, I made some search on Google regarding this matter and found many diverse information, some dated back to 2004, and would like to update and clarify this issue. The question is: what's the problem on re-sharing a NFS filesystem with Samba?. The only way I found to share a NFS mount point on Samba without apparent problem is to disable file locking on NFS mount by using the nolock option on fstab. It seems to work fine, but some say it is a receipt to disaster, while others says it is good to go. As I understand, if a shared NFS filesystem is mounted on two different servers with nolock option, I will probably run in troubles with concurrent file access. FreeNAS --NFS-nolock--Client1 --NFS-nolock--Client2 Similarly, if a shared NFS filesystem, mounted on a second server, is shared by this second server via Samba, I may come accross the same problem due to simultaneous file access without lock, one by the NFS server and other by Samba server. FreeNAS --NFS-nolock-- Server --smbd-- Client If such filesystem is used for write operations only by Samba and no one else, neither the NFS server or other processes on Samba server, would the nolock option on NFS or the re-sharing by Samba be an issue? What are the expected problems one could find in such setup and what cares should be taken to use this and still have a good night sleep? Is there an alternative/preferred setup? Would love to hear your considerations and technical expertise. For reference, here is the respective question I made on FreeNAS forums: http://forums.freenas.org/showthread.php?13037-FreeNAS-NFS-share-mounted-on-Ubuntu-samba-serverp=61416#post61416 Best regards. -- Marcio Merlone -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: https://lists.samba.org/mailman/options/samba

Hi TMason, thanks about the quickly answer. All my servers are over red hat (I'll confirm correct version next monday) with static IP addresses. And the network has DHCP and DNS over red hat too. DHCP sends the wins server; that in this case is the PDC; to all users' workstations. I'm available to give more informations about my environment in order to we solve this issue. Thanks, Marcio. 2013/3/15 TMason c.koe...@live.com Marcio Oli wrote in message news:CANpJy9WD=CLxbB=BQhgS==** 1mt-rkTXT0hVMi6muymZ5RKXMktg@**mail.gmail.com... Hi people, I have a problem and I need so much of your help. I have a login script in \\server1\netlogon\script.bat (on my PDC and BDC) that runs net use commands to map some shares in time of the logon. This login tries to map share in another server (samba member of domain \\server2). So, I put the result at a log and appears these lines: System error 1311 has occurred. There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. This is a recurrent problem, but neither always this happens. Sometimes, everything is wonderful and works very well mapping all shares, but is unstable. --**--** Windows clients have this problem regardless of the type of PDC/BDC you have (Windows or Samba). The problem is that Windows is generally ready to let people log in before all of the network services are ready and as such people can't log in. Are your servers on static IPs? Also, what kind of DNS/DHCP server do you have? This will help in troubleshooting. [Samba] Name Resolve Order : parameter of smb.conf with testparm
I am writing this letter and I hope that I'll have answers about the generation of smb.conf by the way of smb.conf.master with testparm command. Like is described on page 5 of Samba3-HOWTO.pdf. The situation is: - The manual of smb.conf says that the default value of the parameter “name resolve order” is “lmhosts host wins bcast”, but when I type the command like: # testparm -s smb.conf.master smb.conf the following occurs: the smb.conf generated by this command don't have the parameter “name resolve order” expressed, but in my smb.conf.master is configured like: … name resolve order = lmhosts wins host bcast ... At this situation, I think should appear the parameter because it is not a default value. The order is different of default in smb.conf.master. Thus, I would like to know if the documentation of samba is incorrect about this configuration or testparm is with a problem to create the smb.conf. This is the source of slow-down login/logoff: the profile must be transfered from and to the server. If you disable this, obviously you loose also the feature. Disable if you don't need it. This share is not meant for the admin to fool around user's files, but to provide a feature. Folder redirection is a mean to off-load this data transit between server x workstation, pointing potentially 'fat' folders outside the user profile, so they don't get touched on login/logout. Meaningless if you disable profiles share. [Samba] Moving away from samba 3.0.28
Hi all, We use samba 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.8 (Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS) as our company's DC and fileserver with LDAP authentication against an OpenLDAP 2.4.9-0ubuntu0.8.04.3. We are having some trouble regarding filesystem permissions and ACL administration, so we plan to move on to a newer version of samba. We'd love to move to an AD solution, but it seems samba4 is not yet ready for production (is franky - samba3/4?). Easy of administration is a plus here, so if I could avoid compiling from scratch would be nice, though it can be done. That means I'd preferer a pre-compiled .deb package I could install, but if it is not feasable I can use the sources and compile it myself. My question is, what samba version you guys recommend for a small company with simple needs - just single-domained DC or AD and fileserver auth'ing on LDAP, no need for print support? Samba 3.3, 3.4 or franky 3/4? Can I use franky and have a good night sleep? [Samba] Problem after upgrade to 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.8
Hi all, I have just upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS to samba 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.8. Now I cannot run some apps (installed on network mapped drives) I used to be able to run. My user is a domain admin. I don't even know how to start debugging this problem. It happens with only some users but not all, regardless of group membership or file permissions. Translating from portuguese, the error means Windows cannot access the device, path or file specified. Maybe you don't have rights to access the item. But I can copy, move, delete, write, etc with no problem. Just can't run it. Can any kind soul please help me? One question and one problem: 1. The question: I could not find documentation for 'mode' or 'config-file' neither for recycle nor vfs. Where can I find it? The above url has none. 2. The problem: when a user deletes a file from some folder, I get this folder created on .recycle with permissions 0700, no matter the recycle:directory_mode = 0777 config above. This forbids the next user who tries to delete a file from the same folder. How can I make the recycle create the tree with 0777 permission? This way the booting process will try localhost and then 192.168.0.2 and boots ok. It's pretty much like Trixbox but instead of Asterisk and VOIP, will be focused on Samba. Right now, I am looking for a solution for an administrator to easily manage the service. Of particular importance would be to easily add workstations and set up users for Roaming Profiles. Any recommendations on this? I have already looked at SWAT and Webmin (and I will be including them on the package list). However, I would like a tool that is focused on just Samba as a PDC. The base system I have is Ubuntu Server so it would be great if such a recommendation would be web-based although if a desktop application is what I need, then changing the base system is an option. Thanks in advance, Matt Great idea! As a user, I'd like to suggest you the following features/tools: - Ease to add/manage users and machines; - Ease to manage network workstations (software and hardware inventory/deployment, group policies, etc); - Ease to manage workstations configs (proxy config on browsers, mail settings, logon scripts, enable/disable/manage windows firewall, vnc service and passwords, etc); Regarding machine inventory, have you seen SpiceWorks? I ask because you may have two approaches: 1: a samba focused distro. 2: a network management focused distro. Using samba. The main difficulty on maintaining a samba server is the network/workstations management , which you have to handle with 3rd party tools and scripts (like wpkg), which are not well integrated (because you had to integrate/tweak it yourself). A distro made to address all those issues will be a killer product on the market. Better yet if built on top of Ubuntu server. Sorry if this is not the right place to this. :) Please provide some site or mail list to keep an eye on your progress.
